it’s a dubbing issue I’m referring to in particular here with the voice and lip movements very out of sync in places.

Yes that's the ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) pickups in the studio. The dubbing by the actors after shooting makes it look like their dialogue is a little out of sync.

I know…..apologies if I wasn’t clearer on this but I had assumed given the current advances in tech that an issue like this would be resolved perhaps not perfectly but certainly much more seamlessly than it is for this version. Certainly for a release like this you’d expect them to pull out all the stops - which they clearly haven’t done.

What’s interesting is many of the posts online state the issue is only with the theatrical cut, and not the tv edit. I haven’t watched that yet and likely won’t for some time so can’t comment on that but if so that might make sense as to why I hadn’t noticed it before.

It does take from the viewing pleasure as I said because it is so jarring in places. It’s a shame really given how well the images look.

    Hi Peter,

So your post finally prompted me to watch Excaliber, which I would estimate I haven't seen it since watching it back in the 80's on VHS and to be honest wasn't that impressed with it as a young fella. But my God what an epic John Boreman crafted an absolute masterpiece to my eyes now

Onto the transfer I think it's a fantastic picturr transfer by Arrow video so happy with that glad to see the grain intact.

As for the sound, I put on the mono dts soundtrack first and yes I noticed the lip sync issue immediately so I switched to the 5.1 mix and I found it a lot better speech and lips seemed to be more in sync with each other so I watched it the whole movie that way.

Anyway I will have to delve into the special feature. I will also see if I can correct the mono track on the Panasonic 820 player with my Denon anp and let you know.

I can safely say that Excaliber will be one of my top 4Ks for this year!

I might try that for a rewatch, thanks for letting me know. Haven’t watched the special features yet but they’re loaded (3 different commentaries is something you don’t see every day).

I was thinking about it again last night and the vision and the ambition to make something on this scale in 1980 Ireland (and all that would entail) is just off the charts.

The lip syncing issue is an irritant, but you can’t fault the picture or the package.

I have just received a refund if €12 so it comes to €55 now which includes all fees, happy with that.

I will be buying Kill Bill TWBA but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Does anyone know if it’s getting a proper UK release or are we confined to the US one?

looks like the Lionsgate release is the only one from what I can see online.

Did you see it in the cinema? Really was fantastic, I forgot how much fun those films were, hadnt watched them in well over a decade!

It will surely get a release over here at some point?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,139 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

Saw it in the US in December as I was there at the time, yes (I mentioned it in the “what have you watched recently” thread). I really enjoyed it, and loved the extended anime sequence, though the Fortnite sequence did nothing for me. I have so many versions of the movie and I’ll be adding to it again for this edit.

I have: VHS (yes), LASER DISC (yes), DVD, Japanese DVD (paid an obscene amount of money for this back around 2004/5 on eBay which I bought purely for the House of Blue Leaves colour sequence), HK DVD (picked them up when I was there for no real reason 🙄🤷‍♂️), Blu Ray, Part of the Tarantino XX box Set, 4K Blu Ray….and so on. It would be remiss of me not to add TWBA to that list.

Imprint in Australia have announced they are releasing it and they ship to Ireland. I've bought a few times from them and their stuff is top notch.

Anyone who buys this extremely silly product in the year 2026 should be forced to use dial up internet for a year as punishment.

It sold out in a day…..I’d imagine most are just buying it for display purposes or to resell it etc.

Just on the new charges coming in on July 1st, is that going to screw those of us who order from Arrow UK, Second Sight and Even from Amazon.co.uk? It's going to make this hobby more expensive if it is the case.

does anyone use the OOH Pod service in NI? I know they have a collection point just over the border. Might be an option.

On NI, if you haven’t visited HMV’s Belfast store it is genuinely very impressive from a physical media POV. They even have Arrow, Second Sight etc. sections. It ain’t cheap though….

These guys are what you're looking for. You can get an item sent to their UK address up north and they'll post it down here for a tenner.

I've used them a few times and it's worked out well.

Probably a stupid question but how I open this DVD case?

    Thanks

Had similar before. Unfortunately that's a security tag which wasn't removed. Unless there's some sort of very strong magnet you can use which releases it, probably going to have to break and replace the case itself.

Thanks very much for that. It was a cheap sealed copy from Amazon UK.

Hello I was just wondering for those who import if anyone has bought directly from Arrow in the US? I was thinking of buying Conan The Barbarian and Conan The Destroyer from them, I know I might get hit with customs charges but was wondering who delivers for them in Ireland? From a quick search it looks like they ship with a company called Starlinks but not sure if they would use AnPost Dhl or some other courier in Ireland for delivery.

Anyways if anyone has any experience importing from Arrow US you might let me know.

    Thanks

Had a look back in the emails as I got the Conan bundle a couple year back from Arrow US - DHL Ecom Packet Intl.

Can't recall specifically, but I suspect AnPost were the last mile courier at that level of DHL shipping (was only $12 after all), but we are talking about 2 and half years ago now. VAT man would have had to have his cut alright, but can't find an invoice from that far back.

Might have been the last time I used Arrow US, so someone else might have more relevant info

Thanks for that can I ask were you happy with the transfers? Arrow usually do a good job.

Been a while, but yeah, I recall being very impressed with Barbarian anyway, within reason of course, as it's a gritty image which may not be to everyone's taste, but it was at least very faithful in resolving the grain and allowing detail to come through. Do remember some concern over a colour timing issue - nothing major, just nitpicking in a certain scene, but not sure if that was ever subject to any recall. Think most fans would be very happy with it. Think even the new Atmos track was half decent as well - not a night and day jump, but really allowed the soundtrack to be batter balanced across certain scenes - but it does still have a faithful mono track.

Not sure I ever got around to Destroyer - which is normally a good thing :)

Latest order from Imprint arrived, a mixture of BD, 4K and one DVD set.

The After Dark Neo-Noir series has been great so far and the fourth volume has Unlawful Entry on 4K.

In the same vein, Dark Blue & State Of Grace on 4K

Two more in the Film Focus series, Rachel Weisz and Philip Seymour Hoffman

Film Noir Volume 6 - four more quality entries

Two more Tales Of Adventure sets - these are great for Saturday mornings / afternoons.

The Youth Gone Wild box, teenage rampage.

Framed (Joe Don Baker!) plus assorted action in The Boys From Brazil, Escape To Athena, Cassandra Crossing, Cannon For Cordoba and the much-maligned Raise The Titanic.

Lastly, Halifax F.P. on DVD - this was relatively unknown to me until last year, got a DVD-R in a swap and was pretty impressed.

@Romero @McDermotX I just had The Warriors & Evil Dead Rise delivered from Arrow. Ordered two weeks ago and delivered by DPD. I think it might have been sent to Arrow UK first and then send via DPD to here as tracking mentions DPD UK. No import charges on it either

Aye....it's possible the Hut Group have been consolidating their operations over the last couple years. They certainly had local UK based warehouse constraints a while back leading to some delays, so internally they may have sorted out their international operations over the same period.

As long as their backend on Arrow Video US sales incorporate a tax levy of 23% on checkout it should be smooth sailing regardless of inventory origin.
