Not unless he plays for one if the other provinces. Unless they carve out an exception for him like they did with Sexton. But that seems unlikely. Haven't heard any chat about an exception or a change in policy.

Ultimately, it's not Leinster's job to pay an aging winger top dollar so he's available for Ireland. He won't be available to leinster for a lot of the season so if Ireland wants him, it really is up to them to make up the difference between what Lowe wants and what leinster is willing to pay to have him play 8-10 games next year.

I'm sure any perspective club in Japan or England won't want him leaving for Ireland duty. If he's gone he's gone.

isn’t it common enough to jump for a ball precisely so as to evade a tackle? There was at least one in the 6N where a player jumped for a regular pass in midfield and won a penalty. It’s often used to gain advantage over a tackler and is within the rules. Sheehan might have been penalised for recklessness but I don’t think jumping for a ball in that way is illegal.

The player who catches the ball is immune from any and all punishment under the current interpretation of the rules.

Plus, if he does get the two years, surely the Irish coach, whoever that is, will be moving on from him, so Leinster may actually get a full season with him as his swan song

Sheehan can finish almost as well as Lowe. Conan too. The bit of the game Lowe gives you is that boot and his offloading game, the latter is much harder to replace for Ireland.

If Lowe played at the next world cup he'd be the second ever oldest winger to have played in a world cup, for any team.

If hes still kitting out on the wing for Ireland in the world cup against the likes of LBB we're going to be in serious trouble.

(not a knock on the brilliant things Lowe has achieved for Leinster and Ireland, but time comes for all men - and players in a speed position like winger especially so)

I see scrumhalf Naoto Saito is leaving Toulouse.

    No indication where he's going.

    Just a thought.

I mean, I think others have justifiably superseded him this season, but don't think it would be terrible to have him at least available if needed. I don't know that he's appreciably slower than he used to be, speed was never his game, so it's not necessarily something to hold against him. Given the injury profiles of our back 3 players, I'm not sure we're in a position to be throwing away his experience. Lads like Ward, Kenny, and Bolton aren't up to the level yet.

Lowe leaving does leave both Ireland and Leinster short of experienced wings going into next season.

Ireland - TO'B, Hansen and Baloucoune - they are all very susceptible to injury. Nash has also been in and out with injuries

Leinster - TO'B, JO'B, Kenny and Lowe have been out main wings this season. Lots of injuries there. Osborne has not looked the part yet.

I get that Lowe probably wants two years and he just seems to be unlucky in terms of his age profile because I think two years is too long but a one year contract would seem right. However, I would understand if he is holding out for two years.

Who actually replaces him in the team in a big HEC match? Jimmy? Osborne? Kenny is still learning his craft. We're only an injury or two next season from having to stick Jamie Osborne at 14 and Henshaw at 12 in a European match. The squad is looking a bit threadbare

I’d say Tector is due to see some time at 12 in bigger games.

True, you'd certainly.hope that. Henshaw had had a bit of a Lazarus effect the last few seasons insofar as he's been injured, form fallen off a cliff yet then hit form again. That doesn't seem to have happened this time. He looks like he's held together with bandages and strapping now. Not entirely unexpected given he's been playing pro rugby literally straight out of school.

I'd like to see him and Cooney get a lot more time next season. He's looked really good, impressed me more than any other 12 this season.

Oh you're right! I'd completely forgotten about him

He is but he's averaging 300 odd minutes over the last 2 seasons.

He's had rotten luck with injury & is now 29 yrs old...I wouldn't be banking on him if I were leinster given his injury record.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,346 ✭✭✭✭Heroditas

And that adds ammunition to my previous post - another highly injury-prone wing on the books.

At least some of the young academy lads are likely to get minutes.

Cullen went on another swivel-eyed rant in the press conference at the weekend. He seems to be cracking up, for everyone’s sake he needs to be relieved of his duties

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,070 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

I saw it and he looked frustrated. But how was he supposed to answer the question about online backlash to losing the Champions cup?

Social media should be pretty irrelevant to how he does his job. What should he have said?

The man is delusional if he thinks Leinster supporters aren’t on social media.

He’s supposed to answer it like a professional.

    e.g. I understand if there are frustrations…….

But he knows this of course

His messaging through mainstream media is just awful and he’s coming across as a person who is completely overwhelmed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,070 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

He didn't say leinster supporters aren't on social media.

Be frustrated with Cullen if you want, that interview is neither here nor there. And you've misrepresented what he said in the interview so just stick to the justifiable reasons to criticise him rather than getting annoyed about things he didn't say

Does he expect us to stop him in the street and tell him that his time is up? Delusional.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,070 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

I don't suppose so. I also don't expect him to engage with social media. He has a boss who will decide on his future.

Social media is important to fans because it's the main way we can discuss these topics. He'll be having the actual discussions in person with the people who make the decisions about his career. Why on earth would he spend time worrying about social media when he'll be in contact with the people who make the decisions?

To an extent, i get the point in the journalist asking the question. But I've no idea what he should have said except a shorter version of what he actually sai.

I like the way Cullen has changed his tone with the media in recent months.

Instead of the usual stock answers he's shown a bit of personality.

    "

He's not working in some bland enterprise. There is a fan/club relationship and he'd be wise to pay a bit of heed. He sounds a bit entitled and he is taking Leinster supporters for granted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,070 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Is social media a reliable metric of fan engagement? I'd say not. It's always massively skewed towards the most outrageous complaints. Boards is much better than site's that promote based on engagement which is usually based on outrage.

The short version is Leinster will have ways to actually measure the fan relationship. I'm sure an analysis will say it's declining. But surely you don't think Leo reading twitter is a sensible way to measure anything.

I have criticisms of Cullen, but this is a complete sideshow. It's appropriate that it's happening on social media.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43 FestivalFrank

He's basically saying that he has no connection or contact with fans.

Saying all social media is toxic is such a copout as well as there are many forms of it and you can clearly guage true sentiment if you spend a few minutes trying.

If they played great rugby this year and maybe got a win against Bordeaux I wonder how many fans would they have had at the Lions game last weekend? Its that sense of being taken for granted.

”Joe McCarthy, Dan Sheehan, Tommy O’Brien, Rónan Kelleher, Garry Ringrose, Tadhg Furlong and Jordan Larmour will all be further assessed after picking up knocks in the previous two weeks, with a decision on their availability to be made on an individual basis later in the week.”

    Not a very positive report.

What would a trawl of Twitter tell him? That some fans are angry, some are furious, most have no idea what they're talking about, some fans want him to resign, some loons probably want to rape his wife and some fans are disappointed, appreciate the great work they do and want the team to improve and get over the line in finals.

I dont expect him to spend any time trawling social media. It's a waste of time. The salient information is available without all the nonsense.
