In November/ December of the season just gone. So this season.

People seem to have some sort of rose tinted view of Slot because of the PL title, but this team has been deteriorating since during that league winning season, but we got over the line.

I still think the team, style and structures Klopp put in place set the team up for the league win. I do acknowledge Slot made some tweaks which helped the team, such as moving Gravenberch to 6.

The longer Slot has been around, the more he applied his changes, the worse we became. His tactics, selections, substitutions, man management, transfer input, press conferences have all been increasingly bad.

There are many examples of tone deaf crap he has said. Two that spring to mind are comments on Ramsay, and Konate being "too much at the scene of the crime". He pointed fingers too much and did not build up or support players.

I'm glad FSG made another good decision and they have renewed my faith. I'm glad Slot is gone nice and early, and I'm now excited for the future: new manager (who should have an attacking front foot style - the Liverpool way) and new signings.

It is stopping the obvious rot. He had so obviously lost the dressing room and the threat of a mass exodus was very real, and is still a risk. New manager will hopefully be appointed ASAP.

I don’t think this season was the way Slot wanted to play. When he was first appointed the report on him was that he loves his wingers and he got none last season.

I think you are cherry picking some of his quotes to twist an argument, he was actually very complimentary about his players on many occasions. Some of those players need to take a look in the mirror imo.

If last season was an indication on the way he wants football played, then it’s Richard Hughes mistake for hiring him. His teams in Feyenoord didn’t play like we did last year.

Perhaps he has lost the dressing room and no one likes him I don’t know. I think it’s disappointing personally.

I have always maintained that it was 33% Slot, 33% The Board and 33% the players.

Anyway, it’s done. I just hope we don’t get a guy learning on the job who, when the **** hits the fan, has no muscle memory to fall back on and we have another season like last season

It's a risk whoever we get in, even if we somehow got Enrique, it's always a risk changing the manager or in our case head coach, but, Slot was a busted flush at this stage, so had to go. No matter how next season goes I won't be lamenting that we let Slot go, it's the right decision, sure next season might even be worse, but, Slot wasn't going to turn things around from the position he found himself in.

Whoever comes in I think needs to have more influence on who is signed, have the feeling Slot wasn't as involved as he wanted to be and was possibly given players he didn't particularly want, that's a difficult situation for any manager/head coach to find themselves in.

The options are quite limited; Alonso would have been my preference, Enrique and Flick are unlikely to move, so any appointment now is a risk, as they will be lacking experience at the highest level.

I normally can't be arsed to put together such a long winded response, but this post has annoyed me, so I have.

I don’t think this season was the way Slot wanted to play. When he was first appointed the report on him was that he loves his wingers and he got none last season.

    Slot:

“Me and Richard are going to work together when it comes to transfers but not only the two of us – there is a big backroom staff included in this as well,” the head coach explained.

“I think for me it is the way I have worked always and it for me is the ideal way of working.

“Because I can use the most of my time by working with the team and the time that is left will probably be a bit for the family and a bit to talk with Richard about how we can strengthen the team.

“But we already have a really strong team.”

I think you are cherry picking some of his quotes to twist an argument, he was actually very complimentary about his players on many occasions. Some of those players need to take a look in the mirror imo

No. I gave examples to support my argument that Slot is not a good man manager, and that he often openly criticised his players to the press. That is not common, and is a bad sign. That is one example of his bad man management. Another example would be how he allowed players in poor form to play week in week out, or didn't give opportunities to squad players unless he was stuck, or how the squad depth was unnecessarily thinned e.g. Quansah, Elliot - good players who could play a role.

If last season was an indication on the way he wants football played, then it’s Richard Hughes mistake for hiring him. His teams in Feyenoord didn’t play like we did last year.

These are quotes from Slot when he joined the club :

    • On the squad quality: "I have inherited a really strong team... The quality of the players Klopp left was evident."
    • On team culture: "The culture of hard work, not only from the players but also from the staff members, has been incredible."
    • On tactical continuation: "There was not a reason to change lots of things, just keep the things they do really well. Both [Klopp and I] like to press really high and score goals."

Regarding Hughes, yes he has responsibility obviously, but it seems that Slot's approach ultimately morphed from what was expected. Slot said himself there was 'not a reason to change lots of things' and 'both like to press really high' - well, he did change things to our detriment, we lost our cohesive pressing, and we became slow and pedestrian.

Hughes said the following on the reasons for hiring Slot (I've shared this previously):

    28598.png

Evidently this did not pan out as expected, which is why the club are parting ways with Slot. His style, or whatever he was able to implement or ultimately presided over was not 'the Liverpool way'. It was not 'front foot, attacking football'.

Perhaps he has lost the dressing room and no one likes him I don’t know. I think it’s disappointing personally.

He has undoubtedly lost the dressing room. Of course it's disappointing. It was a bloody car crash of a season. I don't think we even saw such a player revolt under bloody Hodgson. Maybe never before to this scale. I can't be bothered listing all the 'worst stat in x category since ninety dickety'. Slot's Liverpool were diabolical this season.

I have always maintained that it was 33% Slot, 33% The Board and 33% the players

Another strange take. As manager, Slot is responsible for performances. The board gave him that opportunity. Yes, the players have been bad, but he is responsible for their performances and the results. He is leading them, coaching them, instructing them. He is picking the team, setting our tactics.

As we have seen, to some extent or another, the players ultimately pushed back and the Board have ultimately fired him.

    Edit:

I don't intend to continue to rake over the past. I'm glad the change has happened, and I want to now look to the future.

Fabregas is a minority shareholder at Como and apparently runs the club. I can’t see him leaving there. It’s a bit of a mad story that club

Nunez on a free, to replace Chiesa , I'd be down.

Car crash of a season? Absolutely disgusting use of words given the tragedy that is the biggest reason for our poor season.

Given one of our players was killed in a car crash it’s absolutely not an ok phrase to use. If someone in the media came out with that they would be slaughtered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,963 ✭✭✭Dr Robert

What offends you doesn't offend everyone.

I know the poster was using it in a different context. Zero problem with it.

Don't get hung up on words causing offence. Life's too short.

Is it time to bring back Rafa?

That was not intended in that sense. An unfortunate coincidence in using a common metaphor

He's a Liverpool fan AFAIK but that's as far as it goes. His football is overrated for me. Couldn't see him getting a top job like that after Spurs.

    Won't happen.

One of the few certainties is that Xabi Alonso was never likely to be part of what happened next. While there are assumptions in some quarters that dragging their feet over Slot cost Liverpool a shot at their former midfielder, who was appointed by Chelsea two weeks ago, Alonso was not a serious consideration for Edwards and Hughes.

That was made clear months ago when sources at Liverpool, speaking to The Athletic on the subject of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, dismissed the former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid coach as a candidate in the hypothetical — and at the time both undesired and unexpected — scenario that they found themselves looking for a new coach.

I appreciate I'm biased and maybe thinking a little heart over head, but I really can't understand how he seems to have been dismissed so conclusively

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,768 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

We will never know the full story here about Alonso and Liverpool. It would be strange if he wasn't even conssidered. He is a very highly regarded coach/manager, and probably has more experience and type of profile that suits Liverpool more than whoever we are likely to end up with.

Well one would assume that the "algorithm" that convinced the club to hire Slot (and possibly fire him!) did not like what Alonso was doing with his teams. Maybe the background work revealed some concerns they had around his suitability for the job.

From the stuff I read his control based approach was just more of the same that Slot was trying to implement. The Premier League seems to have taken a right turn this season and that approach is "old hat".

I’m sure they considered it, and then for whatever reason (presumably something based around style of play and how effective they thought it would be with this squad/league) dismissed it.

I wonder if there’s a question over his style in the PL… doesn’t have a good record against English teams, the only one he’s beaten is West Ham, drew the other West Ham game, and has lost to us twice (including a hammering) and to Man City. Small sample, but maybe a sign of what the underlying data says about things. We’ll find out one way out another pretty soon though!

We will never find out the full story but can guess the Xabi wanted too much control. He seemed to have got his wish at Chelsea, a team not even in Europe this year

I'd heard it mentioned on a podcast that the term "manager" was suggested by Chelsea and was not a stipulation from Alonso. I don't see him taking control of recruitment at Chelsea and I doubt he would want that either.

probably won’t but as regards being sacked by Spurs he’s in good company there. Mourinho, Conte, Pochetino all sacked by Spurs and Postecoglou was the only one of those mentioned that actually won silverware with Spurs. Being sacked by Spurs shouldn’t be the scrapheap for any manager including Thomas Frank the most recent one to be sacked. Mourinho is taking over at Real Madrid.

Overrated is not the word I’d use for Ange. Underrated if anything because he’s only been managing in Europe in recent years. He is widely experienced I think he could do a good job over a couple of seasons with the right players in the right club. His style tends to burn players out over time but definitely gets initial buy in and results.

there’s levels though… Chelsea have been buying with a view to reselling. They’ve not been adding experience, instead favouring raw talent. I would expect part of the control Alonso wants is to shift their policy from profit-minded to scoring he can win with immediately, bringing in more experienced players closer to the top of their value.

This is a good interview with Iraola and offers some good insight into his views on football.

    This quote was striking.

"I think we have to take risks when we regain. I don't like this 'security pass', as they say, to play with the 'keeper, to start building from the back. You have to do it sometimes, but it is not what identifies us. We are dangerous in fast attacks, when we recover possession as high as we can.

"I think we can find more goals that way than building from the back. Sometimes we score starting from the 'keeper, with a lot of passes, but the amount you score like this is a lot lower."

Did the club actually hire Slot former number 1 if so that might be the quickest hiring and firing in football history and a nice pay day for him if he signed a contract.
