How do you know Alonso didn't pass on Liverpool? He may have.

Chelsea is probably a lower risk for him as they hire and fire at will

They are also starting at a lower bar.

Plus, he may have more power there.

I don't think the club was interested in Alonso because of his playing style. Which is similar in approach to what Slot was looking to do.

If they go for Iraola, which seems likely, then they are looking for a return to pressing, direct play and intensity. The way the Premier League has gone, passing the ball around slowly in buildup is dead. Teams are happy to get into their shape and let you play in front of them.

Just on a things there,no way did the club decide to announce the sacking hours before the champions league final to try bury it. No matter when it was announced it was going to be major news,we are the most successful club in England. Couldn't see there been any backlash either, nearly everyone knew h3 had to go because unfortunately it looked like it was gone too far for him to turn it around.

The squad morale and confidence might be low at the moment, similar to when klopp came in,but the quality in it is vastly superior to when klopp took over

Yesterday was technically the final day of the season. Perhaps a trigger day in the contract made things cleaner, or cheaper etc.

Look, had it been announced on a normal day rather than CL final day, it would have been the main football news story of the day, within a couple of hours it was all about the CL final as it should be, and even today Slot going has barely got a mention outside of Liverpool focused fans, as the CL is dominating the footballing news coverage, as it rightly should.

The squad might have more quality than when Klopp took over, but, I never mentioned anything about quality, but, my point was, with all things considered we are probably at our lowest ebb since before Klopp came in.

Barely got a mention? Just went onto a few of the more popular sports websites and all have articles alongside the champions league coverage discussing the Slot sacking. It is getting loads of coverage across all forums

It is to an extent. Though there's huge work to be done.

    quality players:

Vvd, szob, Isak, ekitike, wirtz, grav, kerkez maybe, Alisson

    That's 8.

    second level:

Frimpong, gomez, macca, gakpo, Jones, elliot, others

Plenty of needs to fill. DM, RB, RW

Oh no doubt there is still a lot of work required but the quality of of players in the squad now is higher than when klopp took over. Morale might be as low as it was back then but with league winners in the squad it should be a bit easier to lift morale

Yes it is the CL,but you said that it has barely got a mention outside of liverpool focused fans? Thats not true. It is well documented and near the top of both the BBC and sky sports websites

Here is the BBC website, look at the slider bar on top, liverpool latest second in coverage after the final.

    1000034750.jpg

And below is sky sports. The first two articles are about the champions league final, the next two are about Slot and liverpool

    1000034752.jpg

So its not just liverpool fans talking about it and the news isn't buried anywhere. It can be seen immediately when you click on any website

The club will need a lot bigger squad if you look at the amount of injuries, Bournemouth picked up under him as manager and our own squad has become prone to picking up a lot of injuries over the last season.

The squad planning by the men suits has been terrible despite buying really good players they didn’t didn’t build a balanced squad.

Also whoever comes in needs to be the manager of Liverpool Football Club not a coach of the first team squad.
Hughes and Edward’s are more than likely leaving so what use is a first team coach for the whole club as whole then

Give Enrique a call and offer him the managers job and backing of what he needs to be manager of LFC.

barely mentioned a bad choice of words on my part, but, it's definitely had less coverage due to the CL. Liverpool sacking Slot is massive news and would normally be headline news, let alone Sports headline news, last night the CL was the main headline on BBC news, Slot's sacking was near the end of the news bulletin. Its the second story in football news, but, was below other sports stories on the BBC when I checked earlier this morning. Will leave it at that, as not really important

It could be the case that the IFA have been in denial about the extent of the injury. Initial reports were that it was a very serious injury with damage done to both the bone and cartilage. He was expected to be out for over a year which was why Liverpool were looking at a right back to come in. A few weeks ago, Michael O'Neill said he expected Bradley to be back for the start of pre-season but Slot down played the chances of that when asked in a press conference that followed.

A few days ago, O'Neill distanced himself from what he had previously said.

He’s doing well, you know, he’s making progress, but it’s not for me to put any type of timeline on that progress at this minute in time. We just want him back, fit and healthy, of course we do as do Liverpool but it’s important how that injury is handled.

Still no social media comments from any of the squad or Slot himself?

Martin O'Neill will probably be available this summer?

I haven't read every post in the last 24 hours or so but regards potential new managers. I would be concerned that Iraola will flop badly if he gets it, just a different animal managing a club as massive as Liverpool.

A name that I have not seen mentioned, Cesc Fabregas? Seems to be doing very well at Como, no idea what style he's playing with but they are punching well above their weight. Anyone more informed on his style?

    saw this from VVD:

“We’ll never forget winning the Premier League in our first season together. Thank you, Trainer, and best of luck to you and your family for the future.”

    If I was Slot I wouldn’t say **** tbh. I think he’s a fall guy tbh.

Could the same not be said about Cesc and Como, massive step up as well. Bar we get Enrique, anyone coming in will be taking a big step up and it is going to be a risk

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,007 ✭✭✭Potential Underachiever

Yea true, just I'd find that a big name ex player like Fabregas would potentially get more respect from current players and he's more likely to be able to deal with big egos at a big club, as he's been at big clubs while playing. I'm not advocating getting Cesc in , it's just a bit surprising his name hasn't ever cropped up.

I think Liverpool should appoint Ange Postecoglou.

The fans seem to crave Klopp’s heavy metal football. Klopp was a big personality. Ange is in that category. He’s regarded as damaged goods now probably after he was sacked by Spurs and then went to Forest which was a strange one because that wasn’t a good fit at all so Liverpool fans would be naw naw he’s not good enough for Liverpool but I think he’d be a good fit for Liverpool.

Has the personality and the balls to give Liverpool fans the sort of football they appear to want.

Just a suggestion but I think he’d be a good fit. Would work for a couple of seasons short term at the very least I’d say.

    Ange?

The manager is pretty much always the fall guy though, part and parcel of the job. I said a while back that allowing him the grace to get the the end of the season and CL is ok in my book. Slot just never did get back to consistent football, so it was inevitable he’d be leaving.

There are basically no combo CL/PL managers available so we have to go with someone who is inexperienced in one aspect. With Slot he was successful, but no PL experience, with Iraola he has good PL experience, but not winning trophies, and no Europe. He’s actually quite a different package, irrespective of his style of play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,186 ✭✭✭✭TheCitizen

Thought it would get that kind of reaction 😆.

I think short term a season or two he’d be a success. Spurs fans loved him in the first season but Spurs are Spurs they never achieve much and ironically they sacked him after he won them their first piece of silverware in decades.

Ange undoubtedly isn’t in the running at all for the Liverpool job I just think he’d be a good fit.

Slot is a "fall guy"? That is a very strange view. He is the manager, and managers live and die by results, never mind performances.

He deserves the sack, and the club gave him every opportunity to turn things around by letting him stay on till the end of the season, I would have sacked him last year.

What I mean is that It wasn’t all his fault but perhaps something had to be done. I think not many managers could have made last season work. He was given an expensive puzzle missing some important parts or parts that were not ready to fit in.

Yeah Slot being the fall guy doesn't really stack up with performances for the last year. Style of play, tactics and fitness are a manager's job to oversee and we've been severely lacking in those departments for the last year. He wasn't to blame for everything that went wrong this season but it was under his watch so Slot had to go.

I do agree on earlier posts that Iraola is a risk. I'm always wary of managers coming up from smaller clubs, look at Thomas Frank. When your Bournemouth and Brentford small very well run clubs etc no one really cares if you lose 3 games on the trot (apart from your own fans) but do that at one of the "big six" and it's a crisis.

The closest to a sure thing we could get would be Enrique but I can't see him leaving double European champions for us but I'd throw the kitchen sink to get him if I were FSG. The Alonso situation is really odd he would have seemed a very good fit for us. Ex player, the previous Wirtz, frimpong relationship. Maybe conversations were had but I'm shocked it didn't seem to be considered more.

Going by the bookies it looks like Iraola is all but done so wish him the best of luck. I don't think we'll be bottom of the running stats next season that's for sure.
