The Victoria cup Ascot 2.20 is a very competitive handicap that I have always liked Great Acclaim is my fancy today at around 12/1 a 7 furlongs specialist is what’s needed and he fits the bill.

just back from the sunny Algarve in time for one of my favourite meetings York which is on for the next few days and we also gave Bangor on Saturdays where I back one or two at most meetings using a method I discovered some time ago that is profitable. there is a big sprint at 2.55 which was won by Rousing Encore last year ( likes York) who could win it again this year,He ran a very good race first time out this year when 6th at Newmarket in a big field and while not so good in a small field last time it is almost certain that todays race was the plan. The best handicapped horse in the race is last years runner up Dark Thirty

Both horses were around 12/1 last night but shortened a bit this morning and I have not had a bet yet so am hoping they drift a little.Rousing Encore is the most reliable and the main bet with a saver on Dak Thirty who is inconsistent but very well handicapped 5 places everywhere and while a draw bias can sometimes emerge at York in reality I mostly does not make much difference over 6 furlongs.

It went ok today the best handicapped horse won but i could not fully trust him to give his running so only had a modest bet and my other fancy in the race did not perform, still not complaining and got the price of a good night out.Hoping to get a few quid again tomorrow when i give a chance to one that will probably go off at 20/1 or bigger in the big handicap at 2.20,Harry Vigors claims a useful 7 lbs on Brazen Bolt and he may be able to make all and stay there if breaking smartly in this cavalry charge over 5 furlongs at York. The horse has form at the course and trainer Ruth Carr is good with sprinters.Drawn in stall 19 (some say a low draw is favoured) the front runner can stay out of trouble and i believe there is plenty of speed on the high side and the price is good 20s at the moment and 5 places and maybe 6 in places.Another at good price and may get higher because the jockey with the choice ,Buickhas chosen to ride Kings Trail in the 180,000 race leaving my fancy Al Zanati to Billy Loughnane.Al Zanati was behind Raheeb last time out and that horse was talked up for the Derby after his last run. With just 8 runners Loughnanes mount is an ew bet in the group 2 Dante Stakes at 4.05.

Plenty of action again tomorrow as the flat begins to take shape with more current form to go on.I fancy a couple at reasonable ew prices and a couple at very big prices who i believe could be overpriced. In the 6.38 at Doncaster i think Novello Lad can improve on his good 3rd 3 weeks ago should be competitive at around 6/1.At around the same price Indalo, trained by Roger Varian has a decent chance in the 5.oc at Newbury despite being off for 231 days though i would not have too much on in case the run is needed but Varian can have them ready first time out. Also at Newbury Ciceros Gift is worth chancing at 28/1 in the group 1 Lockinge stakes at 2.35.the horse won a group 1 last year and some said it was a fluke because the pace was too quick and Ciceros Gift came with a strong run to win in a very fast time.He is way too big a price and is there is any pace on he can cause another shock. The other big priced horse i fancy is Darkness who is 22/1 to win the 2.50 at Newmarket a handicap worth 30 grand over 7 furlongs.David Omeara sends him to Newmarket from York for this and has also done this in past with a win resulting from the trip,he ran well enough last time when 6th and could be ready for this.

    Novello Lad 5/1 winner 👍

I backed Sir Benedict in the 5.35 at Musselburgh today and I have a decent re bet on the horse.

This horse has a very good turn of foot but the problem is he must come late and backing a hold up horse in a 5 furlong race can be expensive.Trainer Ben Haslam has another horse in the race,Wrestling Revenue and I am hoping he goes off fast and forces the pace because the quicker they go the better for Sir Benedict who will be running on well at the finish and a slow pace would not help.

This fellow might not be for everyone but I like the horse and he done me a turn a couple of times and is exciting to watch when things go right and his speed in the final furlong is amazing.I you back him you know what to expect as he threads his way through the field.

the money has come for Wrestling Raven a stablemate of Sir Benedict I could cash out for a small loss but I will let it ride as Sir Benedict is now out to 7s.

Benedict ran as i thought he would but the pace was not strong enough,a bigger field may suit better but at least we got our own back.

Naqeeb runs in the listed race at 4.17 Goodwood with an excellent chance on his 2nd run back after a break when running over a mile and now back over 10 furlongs on softish ground which is much more suitable.Priced at 10/1Naqeeb hangs to the right and is well suited to Goodwood (righthanded).Karl Burk won this last year and has a couple with chances including the fav Ice Max.I backed Naqeeb ew at 7/1 without Ice Max and at 2/1 to be in the first 3.Naqeeb is 10s to win outright and i may back him again at that price when guaranteed prices kicks in,he can make all or stay up with the pace which works well at Goodwood and he stays a good bit further.

Great shout on Naqeeb Zimmer, unfortunately 😕 saw it too late.

Naqeeb finished up a very good price and i would have had a good touch had he won, unlucky to be beaten a short head but all bets on him show a profit,to be in the first 3 was the most profitable. Cant complainthough as luck evens itself out and i have had it on my side at times when one i backed wins by a short head or even a nose, the biggest surprise to me was the generous sp and he will probably do us a turn before too long at one of the big meetings but hopefully connections will avoid one of my favourite meetings,York. He simply does not enjoy York and has a very poor record there.

How do you keep tabs on all these fancies.ls it as simple as jotting them down and keeping track in a copybook.

I know i will curse you by saying you are doing ok with your picks ,Do you watch most races ,does it take up alot of your time .

Someday I would love to do similar ,like a part time pro but handy stakes.

Thats a fair question,i write a little note if i see a horse that ran well from a very poor draw,or ran well on unsuitable ground,or one that mainly wins a certain track and run well at a different track making a note to look at it if back over the right trip at a course he runs well at.Ipay particular attention to the handful of big handicaps over 7 furlongs and horses who do well in those when contesting them again. It is not as difficult as it seems because traiers repeatedly target races with horses who have run well over the course and distance the previous year. One will miss many opportunities that we have not seen because we are up to othe things but so what we will see many others who fit the bill and whose build up to a certain race makes it apparent that it is the target.Wining is not guaranteed by keeping track of a number of horses but at least we will lose less.Racing is a hobby for many of us and just like golf we have to pay for it but a good touch now and again makes it worthwhile.

Not the usual quality for a summer Saturday imo but that may not be a bad thing as I try to recover losses made yesterday when one I heard was well fancied ran very badly.

My own fault as I felt the distance was wrong and the going was also wrong but I still went ahead and gave away 150 quid because of what I was told.

Backing two today Redorange in the 2.33 Carlisle should be good enough Starlust would be a big danger but should need the run and infirm Redorange should be hard to beat at 2/1.

At a much better price I expect Zighy to be competitive in the 4.05 at Chester.Billy Loughnane prefers to ride Champonie for the same yard ( Boughey ) and while I am a fan of Loughnane,a very good jockey going right to the top imo he may have picked the wrong one on this occasion.

They are drawn side by side today and I feel Zighy may come out best today at a much bigger price 10/1 and is a good ew bet.

That’s it for today unless I fancy something else or hear something.

Thorough as always zim, I'd add in Regency bias in the 2 o'clock Carlisle, the drop to 6 furlongs might suit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,032 ✭✭✭zimmermania

just one more for today Rousing Encore 2.oc Carlisle my choice last time out at York when finding plenty of trouble could have traffic problems again today but a clear run could result in a win so I have a few quid on at 14/1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,032 ✭✭✭zimmermania

Make sure to get the 4 places the two I mentioned ew are 4places with PP,good luck to all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,032 ✭✭✭zimmermania

Regency ran well I could not feel too good about anything today got my value ew bets placed and my short priced fancy was poor. I will probably back Aurora Nova tomorrow in the 3.15 at Listowel ew.

Derby time again and I give Item a sporting chance, the unbeaten colt could cause a bit of a surprise.

I will be in Fairyhouse on Friday when I hope to see Telegraph Road make up the two and three quarter lengths on Florida Bay in the 4.20 and there is a very good chance the well regarded colt will upset the favourite.

Satisfy my Soul has an ew chance in the 7.09 and I would not rule out the top weight Deuteronomy in the last despite top weight after he finished fast to deny Miss Crinshawn 17 days ago.

In Epsom on Friday I fancy Seagulls Eleven on ground that will suit in the group 3 at 2.40 in the Oaks I give an ew chance to Thundering On who may beat Aidens well fancied fav so let’s hope the long trip home will be lightened by the feeling a couple of winners will provide.

Venetian Lace looks too big in the Oaks at 11/1. I know its lack of a recent win is a negative but its second in the Fillies Mile and third in the Guineas wouldn't leave it with a lot (if anything) to find. Being by a derby winner out of a filly who acted over 1m 2f together with the way she stayed in on in the Guineas having led from early would suggest a step in trip should bring improvement as well. Doesn't look at great field overall.
