What are you on about when you say "he is not good enough"? Good enough for what? To be starting CB in a title winning team like he did last season?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,557 ✭✭✭jesuisjuste

Suarez didn’t improve as such, except maybe discipline, the others weren’t really that decent, at least with us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,557 ✭✭✭jesuisjuste

VVD still had a better season, by some margin imo, and has earned his place over many years. Liverpool at this point needs someone better than him as the second CB, not worse. Konate is just not good enough, and we’re not going to give him a contract to sit on the bench. It’s as simple as that. Players know it, the club knows it.

The days of just getting a player to sign so we can make some cash from them are over, for us at least. These players want that money for themselves.

    He did.

198 goals and 109 assists in 283 matches.

He ended up as Barcelonas third highest scorer of all time.

He was there for six seasons...

Who would be a step up defensively from Konate and how much would they cost? A signicant part of the defensive challenge is the lack of a DM. Having competence there makes Konate one of the last places we need change right now in a very long list.

You can just tell some lads aren’t cut out for the difficult realities of real life.

We support one of the richest and most successful clubs in world football but apparently everything is fcuked.

Crawl under your bed son, we’ll tell you when it’s safe to come back out.

I doubt any fan missed Aspas when he left, that corner is burned in our memories. People may have been missing him in tough times years after but when he left he was not missed. Suarez leaving was a miss but we received a good fee for him.

It is interesting that we have had departures for players for free but if you think about it the alternative is players being sold in their prime. We have not had to do that for many years. Fans will also have to think if they want to be a club that earns money from transfers to be financially viable it will mean losing your best players at their peak when their value is the highest. I prefer to have the players playing for us at their peak and not receive anything or a smaller fee if they have given their best to us.

I am also not deluded to think we will not have our best player want to leave us in the future, it happens to almost all clubs. But the recent spate of players leaving for nothing is not always a sign of a bad strategy.

He had perhaps the greatest season of all time as a striker in the premier league, at the time at least. He maintained that performance through Barcelona. Anyway I don’t mind acceding. The general point is most decent players performed better at Liverpool, in particular under Klopp

    LLol Aspas

You couldn't have set a lower bar for a player to do well after leaving us he was that bad.

I suppose the point being players that play for Liverpool and go to teams in Europe, even England ( Torres ) who are top tier don't always have the success they think they will.

Wilson, Ings and many others will do well in mid to lower tier teams.

Wilson has looked great this season but would you really bring him back...don't think many of us would

Even if the club gave Konate the contract he wanted it doesn't mean the club can then sell him for £50m. Once the player has a contract he doesn't have to go anywhere, the club sell him without his consent which he doesn't have to give unless a) he is fully paid up the remainder of his contract which at £13m a year in the case of Konate would put a serious dent into any transfer fee received and b) he actually wants to go to the club looking to buy him.

If a & b are not met you've quickly gone from a potential valuable asset on your books to an annual liability costing £13m a year.

Not giving Konate the contract he wanted may actually save the club money long term.

Exactly, huge part of the problem at united is they gave huge contracts to mid players and ended up with a very mid team. It took years to undo the damage. Konate is supposed to be at his peak, but his peak is not good enough. We have suffered from decades of mid level central defenders, with the exception of VVD. We need to either breed up exceptional talent, or buy it in for perhaps up to 100M. I’m willing to take a shot on Leoni and Jaquet to start next year, expectations are already scaled back anyway.

As a permanently football depressed Owl. I find some of those absolute doom and gloom posts hilarious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,545 ✭✭✭giveitholly

You really would wonder are they genuine supporters or just trying to wind up people? Liverpool are the most successful club in England. I think we can all agree that this season was an unmitigated disaster, there was so many factors that contributed to that. Some posters want to put the majority of the blame on Slot which is fair enough, but god a bit of perspective as well.

Imagine saying out loud that we are the laughing stock and embarassing. I think a lot of supporters of other teams would gladly love to be in our position.

Konate was a good player,I won't miss his blatant shoves in the back tho...how successive managers haven't slapped that outa him is baffling... I believe Gomez is as good personally...ibou is just as brain dead as Joe tho sometimes... anyway...looks like we are stuck with slott...after all our injuries in reluctant to write him off,but if after half next season things ain't changed... Move him on imo.

There’s probably an element of wind-up merchant about it. I also find that football fans, particularly some of those who follow the biggest clubs from the comfort of their couch or bar stool every week can be incredibly tunnel-visioned. That makes it difficult to step back, assess things objectively, and see the bigger picture rather than getting lost in the latest narrative.

Everything becomes reactionary. It’s why you see posts claiming, “I told you this last year,” or “I was always right about Player X, or manager Y” What those takes conveniently ignore are the countless other strong opinions that turned out to be completely wrong. The hits are remembered and celebrated while the misses are quietly forgotten.

That’s why I struggle to take those posts seriously. More often than not, they’re just hindsight masquerading as insight, with all the failed predictions and bad calls swept under the carpet. It’s easy to look like a visionary when you only keep score of the times you happened to be right.

Yeah agree with all that, social media while has its good points, its also a cesspit with some people looking for instant gratification the whole time

I might be alone on this but I enjoy the journey more than the success. I'll enjoy the road back from this low ebb. Watching new players develop and the team get better. I actually find myself more engaged with the club when things are difficult.

I'm optimistic by nature so I'll be starting the new season full of hope as per usual!

I think the YouTube/Reddit drama lamas don’t help either.

I have a feeling that the popularity Mark Goldbridge has opened the door for a Liverpool option too and they will ramp up any little mishap.

    No surprise. This was coming

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,988 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

Just goes to show how little us fans and the wider press really do know. How many posts have we seen up in here with claims that he'll be definitely there next season. All based on soundbites from the likes of James Pearce and Romano etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,545 ✭✭✭giveitholly

If true then will posters please take note of it and realise not to believe everything you read or what people say. Some posters here were full sure he was staying because of certain sound bites the club were sending out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,545 ✭✭✭giveitholly

This a 100%,the club were hardly going to come out during the season and say that they intended to sack him at the end of the season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,005 ✭✭✭gandalfio

Does this mean Salah, Robbo and Konate could now stay?

Wow, got to admit I am surprised. I thought the assistant coming over was pretty much confirmation

I think it's for the best though
