Apparently, there is going to be a host of very one-sided games this weekend, but there is surely going to be one shock in there somewhere?

    • Apart from the Derry drubbing, Cork have been on a relatively good run of form lately, and will surely savour a chance to correct the wrongs of their 2020 championship meeting with Tipp
    • Kerry's form was quite sporadic during the league, but despite Clare generally doing better than expected against the Kingdom, the gap in rating points is huge
    • Armagh went through the league quite well, and despite looking a bit nervy vs Tyrone, they should have way too much for a Fermanagh side who have had only 1 win this year in Div 3
    • Will the real Leitrim please stand up? The team that beat Sligo (despite being predicted to lose by 6.5) or the team that lost to Carlow by 20+ points (despite being predicted to lose by 1). Galway's form looks much more consistent
    • Two teams with wildly fluctuating forms, Mayo vs Roscommon has the potential for a shock. Somehow, it looks unlikely though, given their recent league meeting
    • One would feel that Donegal have their eyes set on bigger prizes than a victory over Down; as long as they don't get distracted by that, they should win easily here

Two major shocks this weekend, with bonus point for Down and Roscommon gaining them 9 and 7.8 rating points, respectively.

    • Roscommon shoot up to 2nd, where they haven't been since July 2001
    • Down move to 6th, a position they haven't occupied since July 2012
    • No rating points were exchanged in the other 4 games this weekend

    A few questions:

    (i) did you backdate it to 2001 or has it been running since 2001?

(ii) As regards the two major shocks - do you mean the margin of victory for Roscommon was the shock, or just that they won? That they won isnt a major shock…

Roscommon's high position is probably an overstatement of their prowess. Otherwise, the top of the table is becoming a reasonable measure of things. Kerry on top, recent all Ireland finalists Galway, Armagh and Donegal next, the another tier like Meath, Mayo, Dublin, Cork, Derry who may well be in the quarter finals.

However, If Armagh beat Down, and the model will probably predict a one point victory, then Down will still be highly ranked considering that they may be in the Tailteann cup, as Westmeath beating Kildare would not be a shock.

10 point win I can imagine, would be long odds when you consider Roscommon was 3/1 to win.

If anyone bet on the Roscommon and Down winning margins in a double then they'd be on the pig's back now.

You would have only done that if you clicked the wrong button or if you made a mistake. I remember years ago did an an accumulator . Thought I saw great odds for the Waterford hurlers v Tipp. Turned out it was football not hurling! Felt like a right clown.

Anyway looking forward to Louth v Dublin. Whether Dublin win or lose should be a good barometer of where the Dubs are. And if they are learning anything at all?

If Louth win it will fire them up that ranking table, and cement them as a dangerous consistent outfit.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I think to be fair - its never statistically (results wise) an overstatement.

Its just that it doesnt 'feel' like they are the second best team.

I think in reality when you have 6 or 7 teams that can all beat each other, then rankings will change frequently.

Kerry have taken a big tumble since the start of the year when they were at 113.5. Donegal took over the top spot for a while. I think 113.5 is an all time high for any county?

I always think of Kerry being a team that knows exactly how to peak late in championship. Used to see a different Kerry team in August to the one that got there. I also suspect that the shock defeats will arrest a response from meath and Donegal in particular. Not sure what mayo are made of but usually they can get a big scalp and capitulate as soon as expectations rise.

Louth v dublin very interesting, for all hype on Louth they haven’t taken a scalp of a div 1 team in red heat of championship football. A defeat by dublin Saturday leaves that stat hanging over them. I feel they probably will do it though. Dublin football is in a shocking place

If Louth are on it , they will win. Dublin pinning all hopes on con being fit is not an ideal strategy.

I’m waiting for a team to get 3+ goals against Dublin as we cough up so many goal chances.

Ironically I think playing outside croker will suit us better. I think our Best performances have been on the road in the league (Roscommon and Galway first half).. I think when Dublin are struggling croker is a noose around players necks and the pressure can get to them.

Watch out for Dublin bad habits, finding form for 10-15 mins , looking like they might of gotten their sh*t together and then them capitulating to opponents comeback. Armagh and Galway were frustrating (although we were a man down for a half against Galway).

So I’d have Louth slight favourites that may actually level things out because like meath, I don’t know if it suits some teams who don’t like the pressure of expectations and equally Dublin can go in with most thinking they will probably lose.

Could be a good game for neutrals.

Four semi-finals up for decision this weekend, and the prediction model is giving them all to be relatively close games.

    • Little to separate Derry and Monaghan, but Derry's form does look a little better, and they do seem to have held an advantage in most of the recent exchanges
    • Louth are on a great run of form, while Dublin's is quite sporadic, but the model is still going with Dublin
    • Kildare's form took a major dip in the midddle of the league, but they seem to have found their mojo again. Westmeath though took things to a new level when taking Meath out of the Leinster equation, and also had huge league wins against Fermanagh, Limerick and following that, against Longford in the first round of the championship
    • Will Down be able to hold Armagh to 13 points, like they did in 2024? And will their attack spark against an Armagh defence that seems quite open……most of the recent previous meetings between the two sides have been extremely tight

    tl;dr

I'm going to be off for 2 weeks, so the next update here will be around the 21st/22nd of May.

In the meantime, attached are the detailed predictions for the games for the 9th/10th of May, and the shortened version below.

Rossies up there with Kerry now. I suppose that Armagh will not be too far behind if they beat Monaghan. Then it is into the AI series.

It feels like I've missed a lot of action here over the last 2 weeks, but I did manage to catch some of the games. Fierce excitement altogether……..

I'll put up the ranking table week by week so people can see how teams evolved - below is after the weekend of the 2nd/3rd (Monaghan's win over Derry; Westmeath taking Kildare aet).

From the weekend of the 9th/10th - Carlow's loss takes them to their lowest ranking since March 2016, while Clare drop to 22nd, where they haven't been since January 2016

    myimage.png

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,135 ✭✭✭laoisman11

And last weekend's games, Westmeath shoot up to 7th, heights they haven't seen since June 2008, while Dublin drop to 14th, a place not seen since July 2004!

Jayus 14th! Straight away I looked at it to see if were holes in it, potential changes etc. But I can’t even argue with it based on the last year and a bit . 14th is where Dublin should be.

Plus what also struck me look at all the Leinster teams that are between 14-20.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

As it happens, 2004 that was the last time that Westmeath beat them too (indeed, last time they were beaten in Leinster by a team other than Meath).

A right selection of games on this weekend, and only one of them on the box 😕

    • Both Donegal and Kerry have underperformed in 3 of their last 4 games, and over the last 3 years, Kerry have underperformed against Donegal in their 4 league meetings; the exception being last year's All-Ireland, where Kerry overperformed by 10 points. Perhaps Kerry can do it when it matters? Home advantage probably adds to the model's prediction here.
    • There is generally little between Cork and Meath, with recent games being pretty open affairs. So tight that the model is going for a draw.
    • Both Galway and Kildare are coming off unexpected defeats, but Galway's superior rating should get them over the line
    • While Offaly's form has been good this year, and Down's erratic (their result against Armagh falls outside the chart on page 14!), Down have been fighting bigger opposition this year, and should come through
    • London have overperformed by between 6 and 16 points in their last 5 games, so if Laois are not up for this, there could be a surprise on the cards
    • Limerick are on a bad run lately, and Wicklow, while erratic, might have enough to get them over the line
    • Neither Clare nor Longford (for now!) are going to look back on 2026 with fondness, but Clare's superior rating and home advantage should be enough in their 2nd only championship meeting
    • Leitrim have taken some severe hammerings over the last 12 months, including a 23 point loss to Carlow. Somehow, Carlow are rated much lower than Leitrim, probably due to Leitrim's surprise win over Sligo.
    • Little to be said on Roscommon-Tyrone that is not already known, Roscommon have held a slight advantage in recent meetings, and do appear to be going that bit better. But Tyrone are not going to go away quietly.
    • Wexford appear to be on a "2 bad, 2 good" result trend lately, and the game against Fermanagh should be the 2nd in the "2 good" streak
    • There is nothing between Antrim and Tipp, with both playing within form. Home advantage to swing it?
    • Waterford's recent form is in a sorry state, with one win from the last 20 games. Sligo have been operating at a much higher level, and should take the win in their first ever championship meeting

What a weekend of football (Jarlath will be canonised for having 'saved' the game!)……

There was so such movement that only 2 team's didn't change rank, and some huge gains by some.

    • Offaly gained 9 rating points for a totally unexpected bonus point victory over Down
    • Donegal took 8 rating points from the Kingdom and retake number 1 spot
    • Fermanagh had a massive win over a fancied Wexford side, and increase their worth by 6.9 rating points
    • Tyrone snatched 6 rating points from Roscommon with their last minute win
    • Cork climb to 6th, their highest since March 2016 following an exciting win over Meath
    • Clare drop to 27th (first time since Feb 2014) and Carlow to 32nd (first time since March 2016) after losses to Longford and Leitrim
    • And finally, for the eagle-eyes, you will see that Waterford are now ranked 34th…..for years, I have been filtering Kilkenny out of the table for Boards for obvious reasons, but they were always there in the background, with the rating points that they had since their last competitive outing. Waterford's loss to Sligo means they drop below where Kilkenny finished up

Sooo, you got three out of the 4 big games very wrong last weekend. The only one you got right was Galway v Kildare and considering the divisional differences and home advantage etc. that was pretty easy to call.

GAA is difficult to predict 🤔

"Only" 4 games running this weekend:

    • We have to go back to 2011 for Derry's last win over Armagh in the SFC (having drawn 1 and lost 3 since then). Both teams appear to stay relatively close to their form (Armagh vs Down an exception), and with that, the rating difference points strongly towards Armagh
    • Westmeath are on an almighty run of form, overperforming by between 7 and 16 points in 4 of their last 5 games. Cavan's recent results are not so glorious. Despite their geographical proximity, this will be only their 3rd ever championship meeting
    • Hard to believe that Dublin and Louth have approx. the same number of rating points. Both have had some sporadic results lately. Dublin have held the upper hand over Louth recently though, but thinking about all the shocks that happened last weekend, would this one be such a shock?
    • Not sure any team in the championship has been as inconsistent as Mayo over their last 7 games, whereas Monaghan do seem to stick to script better. And they seem to enjoy a slight advantage over Mayo in the games (predominantly NFL) from the last 10 years. This will be their 2nd ever championship meeting
