I did the same. Don't know why it's launching so late over there. I ordered it with one battle after another and avatar steels

I'm not disagreeing or defending it.

I know. I'm agreeing with you.

I saw some people say the changes were to do with the colour changes in tv technology over time but don't know how accurate that is.

Colour changes with each new release because the colour timing will be carried out by different people during mastering. The same for how dark or bright an image will look. There seems to be a modern trend whereby new blu ray releases (not 4k) are practically shrouded in darkness because they're over contrasted. See the screenshots from 'Cannibal Holocaust' below.

    Untitled-1.jpg Untitled-2.jpg

The amount of detail lost in the second image due to black crush is insane.

But even when you have directors or DP's involved in the remastering results can vary dramatically. I believe that Dean Cundy was involved in releases of 'The Thing' from both Arrow and Shout and they have very different timings.

Cameron's use of AI is questionable for sure, it's put me off some of the 4k's of his films. Even before that he's redone some effects for Titanic and Terminator 2 as well. Spielberg added some effects to Close Encounters as well, although the ET walkie-talkies are far more infamous. Which he'd regret afterwards.

He did, and I have no idea what was going through Spielberg's head when he made that particular change. In saying that, not all of the changes from the 2002 release of 'E.T.' were objectionable. Some of the CGI additions looked pretty great. There were rumours going around that he was going to tinker with 'Jaws', but after the walkie-talkie backlash that appears to have been dropped thankfully. Although there is part of me would like to see Bruce cleaned up a little bit here and there. He is a bit too mechanical is certain scenes.

Cameron's messing around is a little less in your face, but it still produces oddities. The remaster of 'The Terminator' looks remarkably different to the previous releases. Some of it looks bizarrely fake. It's too…colourful. I've been watching 'The Terminator' since 1984 and it was never a bright and poppy movie.

Cameron already mentioned converting Aliens to 3D this week and it won't be shocking that if he does convert it that more changes are made to the film.

The 3D malarkey is something I just don't understand. But if he is going to do that, it'll mean another DNR scrubbed mess because film grain and 3D aren't great bedfellows. I have zero interest in seeing 'Aliens' in anything other than 2D.

Some directors for whatever reason can only see non-existant flaws in their films when they look back at them.

It's hard to walk away from something you've drawn, or painted, or built, or filmed and as the creator of something you'll always see the faults so I understand that particular itch. But it's always a shame when a film maker goes back and ruins something because they just couldn't walk away. Francis Ford Coppola has spent a decade farting around with 'Apocalypse Now' producing sub-par versions that weren't any improvement over the perfection of the 1979 cut. But at least he had the sense to leave fans with that cut.

It's been over 10 years since Disney paid billions to acquire Star Wars and I'm still waiting for them to release an unmolested version of the original trilogy.

Great News Near Dark coming to 4K Blu+Ray. Will have to import this.

I do love Arrow as they always ship pre-orders early. Also impressed with shipping time as it shipped on Tuesday and arrived via AnPost Thursday. Another one to sit on my pile to watch🤦‍♂️

I got my one a few weeks ago and it's glorious.

Saw a few people do this online and I'm starting to run out of shelf space so made a steelbook wall display.

In the post today. I first saw this 20 odd years ago when I bought the dvd on ebay and I was blown away by it. Its an extremely cruel and sadistic slasher that positively revels in its own depravity. The practical effects work on show is outstanding. It never received a proper release outside of the US but even then, it was cut by something like 10 minutes. This 4k Massacre Video release contains the previously unavailable theatrical cut which is 15 minutes longer than the directors cut that ive seen so can't wait to give it a spin.

It's not high brow, it's not for everyone, but I effin love it.

    Nice one.

I rented this when I was on holiday in the US, 2006. Only saw the R rated version with cuts galore.

If you are a fan of nasty, exploitative slashers then this is a dream come true. The violence, even in a post Saw franchise world where filmmakers can more or less show anything on screen without censure, still packs a wallop.

Two classics given great 4k transfers.

Up for pre order on amazon. com now, hopefully release this side of the pond not too far behind.

I see the film is spread over two discs which defeats the purpose a small bit I would have thought 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,893 ✭✭✭El Gato De Negocios

I can't see an official confirmation of that but agree, its kinda self defeating if true. Possibly TWBA on one with the 2 theatricals on the other then split in 2 for the blu rays?

Hopefully that's what it is, would be nice to have the theatrical cuts in the set too.

Confirmed it’s two discs in the specs:

    Run Time: 253 Mins. (4K/Blu-ray: Disc I: 112 Mins. / Disc II: 141 Mins.)

It does sort of defeat the point, but also you’d lose quality at more compressed bitrates. And the cinema version had an intermission.

Frankly I think most of the added stuff in the film is fairly unnecessary (the extra anime stuff kills the pacing), and the cleaner break between films one and two is the only really tangible benefit of the full cut.

I’d pay more for a copy without the extraordinarily **** Fortnite short though. A truly appalling cultural object.

Kinda makes me want to go for the separate movies then. Had been holding off for TWBA but an additional anime sequence and having to change discs anyway... might just stick to the versions I know.

It really is very, very similar to just watching the two back to back - which isn’t entirely surprising, although maybe a tad surprising in the context of The Whole Bloody Affair being such a sought after object for so long. The removal of the ‘cliffhanger’ revelation at the end of part one and tweaking of that ending is really the only change that matters, and it doesn’t transform the film or anything.

Anyway, a good experience and watching it all together is the best way to appreciate the whole thing (especially the second part, which IMO works better back to back). If you don’t own it already, it’s definitely not a bad option, even if I prefer it without the extra anime stuff. But I definitely wouldn’t be rushing to replace the single discs :)

Did anyone buy the Imprint UHDs of Kill Bill 1 and 2 that came out late last year?

Would you get a hefty customs charge for bringing it in or no?

As far as the 2-discs go I think it's fine. You can treat it the same as an intermission like the theatrical run had.

For those who want to go ever more old school it's getting a limited VHS release.

The customs fees tend to vary wildly. An Post charge an admin fee which would be around €20 for a package this size then depending on what the invoice says they impose customs. Tbh ive never paid much more than a max of around €15 on customs.

One reason I'd argue for purchasing this release is getting to see Kill Bill Vol.1 portion fully uncut in HD. Particularly 'The House of Blue Leaves' segment in colour!

The only other way to have seen this before (in SD) was the Japanese DVD.

    Thanks for the answer.

Yeah I've noticed how inconsistent it is as well. Only ordered from America once and got stung which put me off a bit.

    Vinegar Syndrome (US) - none

Severin (US) - used to be none but changed recently

    Imprint (Australia) - minimal

Does anyone have a 4K TV from any of these manufacturers? The CCPC has recalled 6,000 over TVs here due to an issue with the UK plug fuse within the TVs. If left unchecked; it will leave the homeowner with a risk of overheating & fire damage on your property.

The affected TV's are from Toshiba, Technika, Northmende & Walker.

Some UHD models are included in the list.

I have pre-ordered from Amazon and it works out at €67 which includes all fees/taxes.

Finally got it after they sent me the standard Blu Ray edition and not the limited 4k version I originally ordered. It came sealed from Arrow but with a HMV price sticker on it so I assume given it’s sold out on the arrow online store they either got a return or called one back from HMV or just went out and bought one (lol).

Anyway, watched it last night. It looks incredible. It sounds great too however the dubbing is off at times and very distractingly so. I’ve looked online and it’s a known issue. Arrow seem to be washing their hands of it and saying it’s true to the original release. I’ve seen this movie a few times on multiple formats and I’ve never encountered this before. I’m not old enough to have seen it in the cinema so can’t comment on that but I can’t imagine it went out like this originally. It also begs the question why go to all the trouble of restoring this and leave the audio like this?

It’s more than a little disappointing tbh for a €50+ release.

Yes, the salary is enormous, I understand that, but that doesn't affect my soul.

Boorman had a ton of ADR recorded for 'Excalibur' because the original sound captured when filming was practically inaudible. To me the film has always sounded odd, especially Nigel Terry's voice. But there's a peculiar feel to Nicol Williamson's voice too.

Yes some of the “accents” are a bit bizarre and begorrah-ish but it’s a dubbing issue I’m referring to in particular here with the voice and lip movements very out of sync in places.

I could change the settings on my Blu Ray player but it’s not even consistent throughout the film so I’d be constantly pausing and resetting and rewinding each time a new issue appeared. Very frustrating for a release like this.

I get you on Terry, not so much Williamson though - at least in this release.

On Williamson, his performance was the standout for me when I first saw this film as a teenager, and remains so.

It looks incredible however. Hard to believe this was released in 1981.
