Why on earth? It's a 7 year old stepping stone car used by many to get into the world of EV motoring.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,558 ✭✭✭joe1303l

Hardly helpful to the OP. An €11K budget doesn’t buy much of an EV as I’m sure you well know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

You might have taken it up incorrectly.

Why would anyone be put off by 3 owners in 7 years? Is it not helpful to suggest that this is fairly normal, and not to be worried?

Here's one with fewer kms and only 2 owners

Hyundai KONA 2019 for sale in Donegal for €13,000 on DoneDeal

(My OH's car, open to knocking a few € off 😁)

Thanks for clarifying @MojoMaker, I may be irrational but I place a lot of value on ownership history and tend to view a one or two owner car (depending on age) as a good indication that it's a good car as the owner(s) were happy to keep it for several years and take the opposite view where a car has multiple owners.

It's just one factor and wouldn't necessarily put me off if everything else about the car checked out.

looks like a nice example alright. i would take that over an egolf for the extra range any day. However i would almost pass it by given the way the ad is written 🤔 It reads like it was written by someone who really wants to be an estate agent - all it was short of was the 'blank canvas and put your own stamp on it' drivel!

I'd be more worried about what the guy in the picture with the light is doing.

Thanks Fiblog, nice looking car (bar the annoying side door dints), appreciate the offer and best of luck with the sale.

My preference is to buy from a dealer as assessing cars aren't my comfort zone so I like the comfort of being able to hold a dealer to account if needs be whereas a private sale is caveat emptor + I don't really fancy traipsing to Donegal to collect.

In that case the bargains thread is not for you. Probably best to start your own thread

Bought the exact model in blue little over a month ago - same spec, and mileage. Great car to drive. Range is a limiting factor but absolutely amazing as a second car. On my car all four diamond cut alloys have whiteworm / corrosion, and a few paint chips here and there - all to be expected with 140k kms. Drives really well though - especially if you floor it and don't care much about the range. Golf feels like a much bigger car while inside, and hard to believe how small other Golf's look driving around.

The Kona if you want range. The eGolf is a nicer driver if your a keen driver. But short range. It's a city car. Not that you can't do long distances but it's more faffing around as the software is obsolete.

It's out of battery warranty and while there are very few issues with the eGolf battery I'd still want one in battery warranty for that price.

You'll be using your phone via airlink and obd to navigate. The inbuilt maps are obsolete on the eGolf.

@user1998, are you saying there are no bargains to be had from dealers and this thread is exclusively for private transactions only?

A bargain is the value you get relative to the price you pay.

For someone with a lot of mechanical knowledge and ability a bargain may well be one of the many crashed cars linked to on this thread or a private purchase where there are some issues with a car that the buyer is comfortable dealing with whereas for someone like me, with little mechanical knowledge or ability, a bargain can be getting a good car at a competitive price from a dealer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,270 ✭✭✭✭User1998

Yes that's exactly what I'm saying. There has never been a bargain posted here from an Irish dealer. Maybe the odd one from Northern Ireland alright but generally there are always better deals to be had from private sellers here👍🏻

The factory sat nav maps can be updated using an SD card as part of any MK7.5 Golf. I’m not sure what the latest version is but Airplay or Android Auto work perfectly in an eGolf. Google Maps or Waze etc. would be better than the VW Nav anyway though.

I wouldn’t regard the 32kWh e-Golf as a city car but it’s definitely not a motorway mile muncher. 180-200 Km’s per day on rural roads is plenty for many especially if it’s a 2nd car in a household.

On that particular Kona, the mileage on it is probably more off putting than the number of owners. The OP is likely looking for a minter EV which will be a struggle given the budget.

You won't get a bargain (in the traditional sense of this thread) from a dealer.

If what you want is not achievable with your budget. One has to change, increase budget or drop requirements.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,303 ✭✭✭54and56

No, not looking for a minter at all, it's a 2nd car which will be at least 6-7 years old or more so expect high(ish) mileage and normal scuffs and wear and tear.

Also don't disagree on mileage Vs # of owners for that example. Sometimes more owners in good condition with less mileage is better than one owner high mileage. Case by case on their merits.

    What’s your actual budget?

You initially stated €11,500 but then posted cars from dealers at €12,500.

You also stated inside M50 trios but will you be limited by this? Definitely no longer trips?

If buying a Kona, even from a dealer you need to listen yourself for bearing "whine" from motor or reduction box. Typically you can only hear this at low speed with pedal to the metal. This indicates an incoming 4000 euro bill.

I have a video of the noise about half way down this page

Its hard to explain and hard to test for, common issue and car may be out of all warranty depending on age or mileage. Without that noise the cars are great. The boot is small, back seats small and dash plasticy. Make 100% sure battery Size is 64kWh as some models are 39kWh and dealers lie or don't know. Range above 300km is a good guide.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,303 ✭✭✭54and56

Thanks @Gumbo, I'd like to pay no more than €11,500 and will stretch to €12,500 but not beyond that.

95% of trips will be duburban run arounds inside the M50. The odd trip down the country (Wexford, Athlone type mileage) but nothing major and nothing which coudn't be done with a charging stop planned as part of the trip as it'll be all social / domestic type stuff.

Generally speaking an EV of a similar age to an ICE car may have more owners, simply because technology ages faster, owners trade up to vehicles with longer range, getting over the fear of the adoption of their first electric vehicles. The Kona would in many ways be a gateway EV that tempts new owners into the electrified world, so a Kona with a few owners would be relatively normal.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

“My preference is to buy from a dealer as assessing cars aren't my comfort zone “

I appreciate what you’re saying- and I wouldn’t be super knowledgable either - but unless you’re spending 20k+ on a relatively new (3 years old) EV, then in my view you’re not really protecting yourself as much as you think you are by buying from a dealer. Many dealers selling sub 12k EVs aren’t the sort who will provide you with great support if you end up buying a dud.
You’re far better off getting some guidance from respected posters here on a car you’re considering buying in a private sale- if it comes with full service history for example and you do a car check for accidents/theft, and if the car isn’t known for a manufacturers defect, then really there’s not much more to do than test drive it, make sure everything works and pay your money- you’re going to get a much better, cheaper, younger car buying privately at that price point

Exactly. I also think older EVs had less range and when new there were less chargers around. So people out grew them pretty quickly.

When I looked for ours most older EVs had more owners than a similar as aged ICE. I think mine had 3 owners at 30k. But I bought off a main dealer with with extra warranty.

You can plan trips with different EVs in the "A better Route planner" ABRP. Useful when window shopping and choosing an EV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,555 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I've done the updates on mine and there's major local roads and junctions simply not on it.

I use Google maps because it's better than Waze for pitches. On a long trip I use ABRP with an ODB dongle. It can read the eGolf live battery state and use it navigation. I use carlink 5.0 which makes it all wire free.

I've certainly done long trips in mine down to Kerry and back etc. The OP clarified it's mainly for local trips. I'm just saying there are more suitable long distance EVs if someone does that a lot. ACC is very good on the eGolf for long journeys.

There's a lot more chargers SE Wexford direction now than ever. So it's a non issue. But if I was crossing the country entry weekend I'd buy a newer ID3 with it's faster charging and bigger battery. But I think the eGolf is a hidden gem in Executive Trim

This Tesla Model S says free supercharging on the ad, but no mention of supercharging in pic 10 of the inforamation screen? Isn't it meant to display here clearly if it is free supercharging?

This has been on Marketplace for 2 months. Might be worth a haggle...

I think you need to scroll right down to bottom of the screen to see it. You can also see it in the app if they have been supercharging recently.

I’d advise the Kona over the golf then.
I do dub wex a lot and I know it would be only one stop but it will grind your gears after a while.

You’d want to do that trip return without stopping. It’s only 120km max each way depending on where in Dublin and where in Wexford.
