For those ever considering a heatpump, turn down your gas / oil boiler flow temp to maybe 40 deg, and see how well your rooms are heated, or kept warm.

Heat pumps run at much faster flow rates, so only have 1/2" pipes on links from your backbone to individual rads

i ran my house through heatpunk and it is recommending 7kw at 45 degrees flow temp at -3 i probably havent entered the rads very accurately though.. actually i forgot to change the upstairs internal walls to having a heated space so that brought it down to 6.3kw required. I didnt come across the section to change airflow?

found the air changes.. under custom room.. with all set to .75 now heatloss is coming in at 5.579kw

so im thinking a 7kw heat pump would be the way to go? maybe 6.. what i dont want us to be underpowered where its working to hard or overpowered either.. heatpunk recommended the midea m thermal artic 8kw which is about 129% overszied 4.29 scop at 45 c

When I asked Midsummer recently for an AroTherm for a friend, they said that they were going to get them into Ireland.

I only say that since the 5kW unit can do over 7kW.

You'd need to look at other units specs to see what they can actually produce, but I wouldn't be keen on oversizing at all, as you'll have cycling in milder weather.

If you look at the link to my data, you will see that while I am running continuously, I am very much running on unit minimum now a lot of the time during the mid afternoon.

My thoughts a year ago was, if I need to use a fan heater to top up a room 10 days of the year, then so be it. We didn't need to, as it generated enough heat

So you would suggest going for a 5kw aerotherm?

Totally. Remember that the larger the unit, the higher the minimum, which can lead to increased cycling, which therefore increases consumption and reduces efficiency

I wonder how realistic it would be that the seai grant would cover the cost of a heatpump install if new cylinder not required? Or close to it?

I've really no idea tbh. But sounds like the minimum is always high, irrespective of what is needed or not

My regular plumber isn't signed up for the grant system.. he installs Panasonic heat pumps and doesn't seem that up on them. He does excellent work though so id like to have him fit if it ever gets around to it

DIY is very do-able, especially changing from an oil boiler, as the pipes will very likely be outdoors already, and just need extending.

Of course, the indoor pipes can be an issue, as can the emitter sizes

ok so interestingly I have the heat loss indicator from my last BER.. its 1.91. Using that and google

and it suggests if you have the heat loss indicator, Floor area m2, and design temp you can calc the heat pump size.

    Heat Loss Indicator

    Floor area m2

    Temp Difference

    Heat pump Size

    1.91

    121

    24

    5.54664

These are the numbers for my house based on design temp of 21 degrees at -3.

So it looks like 5kw is probably too small. 6kw might be the right size.. or 7 for a bit of oversize protection?

Whats reassuring is the heatpunk and this is basically coming up with the same recommendation for heat pump size.

Great post! I will research further.
Secon has a plumbed Samsung unit https://www.seconrenewables.com/products/samsung-g7-5-4-35kw-1ph-150-30-3z-zenith-pp-slim?variant=53741473530202 i might do more research on.

Going down this route myself. My heatpump arrived today. Underground pipework already done.

One question I have(well actually loads of questions), my heatpump is out the back but my hotwater cylinder is upstairs. I need to run a temp sensor from heatpump to cylinder. Original wiring is only about 7m long. Would cat5 suffice as it will be routed a fair distance?

Cat5 cable is fine for the temperature sensor,

A temperature sensor should be fine over Cat5. With the Vaillant, it had an ebus wire which HAD to be 0.75mm².

Re-read the instructions for whatever unit you bought, as you may only need the temperature wire to the Controller, and not the outdoor unit.

However, irrespective, I would add a 1" flexible pipe into the trench with a pull chord, for running anything else. In fact, I would run two - one spare.

Will you drop the armoured AC into this trench too ?

Was planning on Cat5 for temp sensor. Unfortunately it has to go back to heatpump. Pain in the ass, but just wiring in the house to be done. Yes I have put the SWA into the trench also and a spare trunking for future proof

Great to see, working through this atm….my main issue currently is it looks like i will need some level of replumbing due to the way the original potential single pipe system.

In terms of getting the heat pump hooked up to the consumer unit - have you found it hard to get someone to do this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,987 ✭✭✭micks_address

i had an electrician do it.. depends if you need a cert or not.. ours was certified for the grant but to be honest seai didnt look for any of that yet.. they are supposed to be doing an inspection at some point.. they have already paid me the grant.. scheduled one over email but we were away so i asked for a new appointment which they havent sent out yet.. for ours armoured cable from the consumer board and new rcbos, one for the heatpump and one for the control center which is in the attic close to the hotpress.
