Leinster are away to the Lions and the Sharks for their opening URC fixtures next season. That's probably going to be two defeats, but I'm glad we get the South African tour done at the beginning of the season, rather than it occuring post Six Nations.

Tough fixture list to start next season.

We open again with a road trip to SA, and then have Cardiff at home, Munster at home and Connacht away.

That's 4/5 opening games against playoff sides (and the only other team is the Sharks in Durban, who will surely get their **** together eventually as they have half the Springbok team in their squad).

Probably better time to play Sharks. The rugby championship would be only finishing around this time, you'd imagine their main guys won't be back so soon

There's no rugby championship this year.

SA last match before October is 27th September v aussies. They may even rest players for that one after their 4 game series versus new Zealand

And Leinster likely won't have the majority of their Ireland players either so it's pretty much a wash.

So a RDS grand opening against Cardiff. That will be a great occasion altogether.

Tbh I would love to host Munster as the first game in a revamped RDS. You'd guarantee a brilliant day and a fantastic atmosphere.

But the telling "Dublin" location would suggest the Aviva. Understandable as if it's marketed and priced well they could put 40k in it. Sure we put 50k in Croke park for the same fixture.

hmmm interesting dynamic coming into this weekend from a (more) neutral perspective perhaps. Bordeaux are quite strongly fancied to win, but Leinster have played very well the past few weeks & look to be peaking at just the right juncture….. hard to call tbh, but you'd feel Leinster's pack will have to get the better of the Bordeaux pack to win, as the Bordeaux backline are sensational . On paper this looks likely so I think it's gonna be bloody close …… Bordeaux are still the likely winners but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Leinster turn them over & break their duck.

It's gonna be a cracking game by the looks of things….

Any thoughts to our tactical approach? Our fitness, especially in the 2nd half, has been a strength for us this season. Will we go for high ball in play time, to look to tire Bordeaux, or a more much focused, defensive approach? Don't fancy giving them broken field opportunities.

I don't think we need to deviate too much from what we've done well.

    Hammer up and disrupt rucks.

If we can manufacture slow ruck ball and keep an organised line for a few phases then they don't get to kick on their terms.

I do hope Keenan, TOB (if fit) and Reiko bring their A game aerially. We need to be commanding there. Easiest way to create the unstructure that UBB love is an unclaimed contestable kick.

I did notice Leinster the last few games don't have the last man back claiming the contestable kicks. Rather the wing tracking back is the one to try claim. Initially I thought it was because we were treating Sam with kid gloves against Toulon but we've used it more times since.

It's clever. It means the winger tracking back no longer has to give "access" to the attacking chaser as they're the ones contesting. It also means that in the event the ball get's batted back there is another body sweeping to clean up.

Our tactical approach will be the same its been for every single game this season. We never deviate.

We'll look to batter the sh!t out of them up front continuously until they soften around the edges. We'll look to strike off second or third phase off set piece, and if that fails we'll go back to battering the sh!t out of them.

In defense we'll blitz everything, including midfield rucks on both sides. We'll depend on our scramble to save us on numerous occasions. We'll rush jalibert every single time and hopefully he won't learn not to carry.

I listened to a couple of podcasts today and all the so called experts had Furlong starting for what he offers around the field.

Am I missing something others are seeing? I would have Clarkson for definite starting and would probably even have Slimani on the bench. Furlong has been poor all season and I wouldn’t trust him to even get through the game without having to come off with his calf.

No you are not. A ridiculous number of pundits just don't watch games on a regular basis unless they are paid to watch them on commentary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,699 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

The only argument for him starting is if he the coaches aren't convinced he is fully healthy, and don't want to risk him having to play the whole game if he replaces Clarkson early.

Bordeaux are rightly favourites, they're won every game with a try bonus point, but wouldn't say they're the strong favourites. Paddy Power have them at -5 which I think is about right.

I think there is hope in Leinster's last couple of performances, and Bordeaux have not looked perfect.

Bielle-Biarrey is fine and they're optimistic about Adam Coleman, so looks like they'll be close to full strength. And presumably UBB fans will massively outnumber Leinster.

    But I'm relatively optimistic.

let’s face it we’re always relatively optimistic as Leinster supporters which I enjoy, but I don’t see it as tragic if we’re beaten by Bordeaux who are a phenomenal team and ultimately it’s down to 80 minutes in a final which is a privilege to be part of as we learned from the heart ache of last year b Northampton. Hopefully we can draw from the pain of previous losses as a source of inspiration that Bordeaux don’t yet have

It's all about cutting out the silly errors on Saturday. So many of Bordeaux's tries come off either knock-ons, fumbles etc or off the resulting set pieces from those errors.

I ho early think of we can do that and keep it relatively tight up front, we have a bloody good chance.

On today's RTE rugby podcast, Bernard Jackman says he has heard that Jamie Osborne is on the bench for this weekend. If that's reliable information then obviously Henshaw starts. But the bench looks very interesting them. Osborne covers wing, centre and fullback which diminishes Frawley's appeal as a multi positional sub. Does that leave the door open for Prendergast at 22 I wonder. Form wise you go for Frawley.

Sounds like one of Lowe or Reiko would miss out then, don't think Reiko has played right wing?

Or could mean both start and TOB is out injured.

Ioane last started at 14 on the 15/06/2019 for the Blues. He’s started there on a few occasions but on a quick glance I’d say less than 10 games. Think he finished the Ospreys game at 14 with Cooney came on.

I think he’ll miss out regardless. Very good player and in great form but Lowe, TOB, Ioane and Osborne are all arguably a level above him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,470 ✭✭✭crisco10

he finished the Lions game on the right wing anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,699 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

Theoretically perhaps, but I think Jimmy's been playing better than all of them bar TOB lately. I like him more at FB than Osborne, he's quicker and a better defender, while still offering a pretty good left footed kicking option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,548 ✭✭✭clsmooth

I don’t think he has the aerial game or kicking game of Osborne. I think he’s very similar to Keenan in many ways in the fact he’s a great footballer and elusive runner and always used to think he should be able to fit in at 15 for both Leinster and Ireland there but not sure he’s ever really impressed there like Osborne has. I think it’s because he’s not as good as the other two under the ball.

Interesting point here on UBB ticket prices compared to the extortionate prices for Leinster games:

Despite the demand, ticket prices at the Chaban-Delmas remain very fair. You can attend a home game for as little as €7, even for the biggest games. The cost ranges up to €75 per ticket.

The art deco-style Stade Chaban-Delmas was previously best known as a football stadium, hosting World Cup games and also being home to FC Girondins de Bordeaux, but it is now regarded just as much as a rugby ground.

“The €10 seats in the corners attract young people, students,” says Yoan Leshauriès, a journalist with Bordeaux-based publication Sud Ouest. “These low prices help the club to fill the stadium every weekend.”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,573 ✭✭✭Blut2

The European cup knockout game pricing structure is out of Leinster's hands to be fair, but it really shouldn't be.

If there was a revenue split, and Leinster were left in charge of filling the stadium, shifting enough tickets to sell out should always have been the priority for QFs/SFs to give the games real atmosphere. But that would likely require enough lead time (a few weeks) and also quite a few promotional tickets.

But something like 10euro tickets with a valid student card would do wonders for selling tickets, getting people to games who usually won't go because of the price, and improving the atmosphere for everyone.

That and giving out X number of free tickets to the clubs to give to minis and their parents, or to schools to give to schools players.

And a few thousand 20euro promotional tickets for the general public to round it out.

This Leinster pack has 500+ international caps for Ireland (excl. Lions) while UBB's starting pack has ~ 120 international caps. Must count for something.

    1. Andrew Porter (79)
    2. Dan Sheehan (39)
    3. Tadhg Furlong (86)
    4. Joe McCarthy (24)
    5. James Ryan (80)
    6. Jack Conan (59)
    7. Josh van der Flier (79)
    8. Caelan Doris (60)

UBB have the edge at 10 and 11 and perhaps 13 with Penaud, but on paper surely that pack has what it takes to really front up physically.

I hope we target Penaud if he's at 13. He always leaves a lot to be desired defensively, and given the experience levels of our centres, you'd hope we can eek an advantage there.
