Westmeath was always coming. The GAA love a story to sell tickets.

We won’t beat them. They are playing well. We’re at rock bottom.

Well about as fortunate as draw as we could've got but id have my doubts that we'd beat them, although we've an excellent record in Mullingar.

I'm happy enough with that draw . Should be a bit of bite on the line with the bull and the Westmeath crowd so it'll be entertaining if nothing else

I don't think we are at rock bottom but we are low and there is always a sting in a dying wasp

I'm just glad it's not Armagh for another drubbing

And sure it will not need too much diesel to get there.

Good to see Cian O'Reilly back for Killygarry and Barry Donnelly for Arva.

Any reports of any injuries/players coming back? Or any news… at all.

John Heslin back with Westmeath, that's worth 5 or 6 points to them

Really? I think it's mad. He's been retired for 2 years. He's not a young fella. That's a long time. Game has changed and it doesn't mean he will automatically just start kicking 2 pointers for fun.

I was at the Donegal game, and I cant say conservative. They were 1-8 to 0-2 up early on and missed 2 great goal chances, and the goal Donegal got was from a poor kick pass, and Donegal kicked on in to a purple patch and went in at HT only 2 or 3 Down, nip and tuck second halg, Donegal definitely better on kick outs, but it was entertaining. Re Derry game, I wasnt at but from chatting to someone who was, they started slowly, but pressed high in the second half and were wasteful.

Lacking size and probably not as good as last year but the young lad from Gowna, Jake Brady looks very good, and Graham is a handful. Imade from the Bridge has some engine on him as well.

Unfortunately they’ve to travel to Crossmaglen for 12 so there’s no chance of a victory.

I think I heard it all when travel was rolled out as the latest excuse for an underage team losing.

Aye, so much talk about the minor game being at midday wouldn’t be what supporters want to hear. If that’s being suggested as reasons for poor performances or results then where do you go…………..! Bizarre!

So much for being too conservative as well, piled into Armagh and scored 2-23, any day you beat an Armagh team by 20 points up there is a good one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,783 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

How many games did you watch or attend last year under this management?

My initial comments about the travel were sarcastic because people are badly stuck for excuses if that is being rolled out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,250 ✭✭✭cavan4sam

That was a great performance today by the minors

Is it a bad Armagh team or are they pretty good . I guess we'll know this time next week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 228 ✭✭mogue77

they beat Fermanagh by 15 points and I think Derry beat them by 7 so I’d say it was a very good Cavan performance.

I thought Derry knocked out Cavan couple weeks ago in minor.

How does this work was that a different competition?

A friend from Armagh told me they have been terrible at minor for the last two years. He did say he was impressed by Cavan though.

Derry beat Cavan but you get a second chance. Unfortunately Cavan have now drawn Tyrone who, like last year, appear to be a good bit ahead of us - going on the League game earlier in the year anyway.

Was at the Donegal game in Breifni last year and the final against Tyrone. They were not conservative against Donegal especially in 2nd half where they blitzed them in a 15 minute period and were also very well prepared for them around the middle of the park. The final in Enniskillen was played in bad conditions with a really strong wind that Cavan had in first half and didn't make the most of but not a game you could define how the team approaches games.

They seem to have rang a few changes for today and regardless of how poor Armagh are look to have put in a very good performance. Tyrone next week will clearly be a tough task but Monaghan beat them in the minor league final though then lost to them by 7 in this championship. Will need a start like they got today and not the one against them in the league when game was over after 20 minutes.

Conservative.....should have won by more if they only attacked and gave service to the forwards.

Re excuses for the Derry game. It's valid. They left Breffni at 7am for that trip so lads likely up from 6 so valid excuse. Senior teams wouldn't be subjected to that and would likely travel the night before if they were. Home advantage huge in the Minor Championship

I posted here last year about my thoughts. They were conservative. I watched the manager run down the sideline and accost a player for even thinking about kicking a sideline ball forwards in one game. Last year they had 3 very talented attacking players and didn’t use them correctly IMO. The ball wasnt let in - in one game (it was either Donegal or Derry iirc), the ball was let into Quigley once and when it was, it ended up in the net. He’s a forward good enough to go straight from minor into the 20s this year. They also had this year’s captain and another player scored 1-12 available last year. The system is more about possession. It would actually suit a team like this years, who are limited, better than last year’s side.

In senior team news, a genius move by our county board securing the manager who we will now be told started the Westmeath football revival.

God help us in a few weeks

I don’t agree re the travel excuses. For a start, it’s the same for every team. Secondly, these are lads 16 and 17 who are used to travelling on school trips etc. If the travel is that big an issue, bring them up the night before.

That said, our county board are cutting corners wherever they can so we can have a hotel in Breffni so mightn’t sanction the cost. It doesn’t seem they want to sanction much when it comes to actual football lately.

Last year Westmeath can’t win a game. This year they win Leinster under Mark McHugh. The change in management certainly worked wonders for them. Cavan County Board really should reflect on their decision making.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,250 ✭✭✭cavan4sam

One would almost think you had an agenda against our Dermot and every other Cavan team at this stage ... We'll put it up to westmeath in 2 weeks time and don't be surprised if we turn them over ...they are far closer to our level than they are to the Dublin of a few years back and don't let the noise and media hype blinker you ....

Re the topic I commented on. The manager in question made a decision. If it was the wrong one, live with it and learn from it for again. Don’t whinge about it.

No problem with the teams. They are players trying their hardest and giving up a lot of time. It’s the county board and those in planning I have the issue with as my posts will show. What’s going on isn’t fair on the teams.

Is that the height of our ambition now, to "put it up" to Westmeath. I don't know Cavan King, dont agree with everything he says but by any metric or any measure, Dermot McCabe's reign as Cavan manager (so far) has been very poor and his long reign as games Development Manager has been nothing short of a calamity by any measure. I would like to see anyone make a coherent case to the contrary.

Game against Westmeath confirmed for 5pm on the 30th May. Given their win yesterday and capacity of Cusack Park (11,500) I would expect the game will sell out with a massive home crowd there.
