Similar happened to me, got offered nine months half price when I filled out the cancellation email.

I've left them though and have gone to Sky. I don't really understand how they are competing with them at all. For the same price as the half price offer I get the same broadband speed, more channels and access to Netflix, Disney+ and HBO Max. Virgin would end up more expensive given the three months at full price. Maths just don't add up for me this year even though I've been using the nine months half price for a good few years now.

I still think the change identity every year becoming a new customer is the best approach with VM. I'm finished on the BB treadmill I've signed up to the Gomo €29.99 BB for life😉

Is Gomo Broadband wireless only? What is the modem like?

It's OpenEir ftth, they use the Eir F3500 router, I got 3 months free mobile for myself and the wife which was a nice little bonus.

I wouldn't take the 9 months anymore. They cave and give you 12 if you just ride it out.

Everyone else is 30-40 max for a year new customer. They either want the business or not.

Installations from other places are quick and simple these days.

It's worth the drill hole to get another point in so you can change every year going forward.

Agreed. I think this is our 4th year of renewing at 12 months half-price. Not worth staying with them for anything less.

The sooner Eir finish their rollout and we get past this crap the better.

I sent the cancellation email and got no callback at all. Just an email saying to call them if I thought there was anything I could so. Even my house has fibre I show up as not connected on most of the websites, its been over a year since it was put in.

What is the next best step, sign up as my wife or call them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,303 ✭✭✭0ph0rce0

Sky is now showing up on my eircode for ftth. Up to 5gb after well over a year since the new virgin fibre cables were installed. Vodafone also has 2gb max available so i assume it's active as they were only offering 1gb last month.

Virgin still showing 500mb and 1gb, you'd think they'd be first to advertise the faster speeds after sending me a letter a year ago saying i can get 1 , 2 and 5gb and being their infrastructure 🤷

The replacement Sky service that I got is being delivered through the Virgin fibre infrastructure. Technician that was installing it does all of the work on Virgin infrastructure and he passed a comment that he reckons Virgin will be relying on their reseller wholesale business going forward and pulling back from public facing customer products. More lucrative apparently.

With all of the access providers (open eir, NBI, SIRO, Virgin FTTP etc.) you are handed over to the retail provider's core network at a certain point, so it's not just full reselling. You would be connected to Sky's core network.

It wouldn't make much sense in my opinion for Virgin to pull out of public facing products as they have their own extensive core network.

This thread was a good reminder to cancel. I had a really old package (tv, phone, broadband) that was way too expensive so I finally cancelled and got the broadband only option for e40 for 24 months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 551 ✭✭✭Catmologen

I cancelled via email on Saturday and got the call today and was offered 500mb and basic tv for half price for 9 months. I said I would only accept 12 months half price and they offered 1gb and basic tv for 57 euro per month for 12 months. When they call be sure to push them for the 12 months half price.

I got on to Virgin and they gave me the 12 month new customer deal, so I went with that.

Easiest year ever to get a deal. Virgin Fiber was fitted a few months back and Sky are now offering broadband on it.

1 phone call to Virgin and i got the new customer offers of half price for 12 months once i referenced Sky pricing. I was willing to leave as there is now proper competition in my area which wasn't there before

Trying to sign up as "new" customer online. The website says I cannot get the new customer deal at this address.Anybody have this problem and how did you resolve it.My wife has the old account

Probably a stupid question but I have no phone line in my house so have been with Virgin for years as that's the only service available in my area. I have just put my eircode into Sky website and it says that Full fibre is available in my area, does that mean I don't need a landline? Thanks in advance!

It will mean either one of the other FTTP access networks (open eir, SIRO, NBI) has become available to you or Virgin FTTP is now available to you. You can switch between Virgin, Sky, Vodafone and Digiweb with Virgin FTTP.

If you are still on coax with Virgin, you'll need a new fibre cable and ONT installed regardless. You can check the ComReg broadband checker here, Virgin FTTP will be listed as Virgin Media / Fibre / 5,000Mbps -

Thanks a million for this, delighted to be able to finally move to a different supplier rather than the dreaded phone call to Virgin retention dept every year. I'm currently paying €68.50 for just broadband where as Sky are offering new customers 12 months for €27.99. I have cancelled with Virgin today, sorry to bother you again but if I need the fibre cable and ONT installed, any of when I should sign up with Sky please? I obviously would prefer as least down time as possible. Thanks for your help so far.

You should be able to get Sky to cancel Virgin for you under the new IAS switching process, they wouldn't need to give notice, just make sure to be outside the minimum contract term. You can instead cancel it yourself, like you've done, but you need to give a months notice.

You should be able to tell Sky the date you'd like it activated/installed, it could be a week or two to get an engineer appointment in my experience with open eir and SIRO.

Thank you again. Can i just order Sky today then and get things rolling or do I have to wait as I have sent the cancellation email? Last question, i promise!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,741 ✭✭✭NotShero

You're grand! I presume you have Virgin FTTP now available to you, do you? Not SIRO, open eir or NBI.

If you're not outside the minimum term and it's still a month away, I'm not sure would the installation of Virgin FTTP cause the coax to be cancelled early, so you would be best to ring Sky today and ask them if they can give you an install date for a months time.

But If you are outside the minimum term, it won't matter when you get Sky installed from now. You've given your cancellation notice, even if Virgin coax is cancelled earlier it shouldn't matter.

Just an update.Gave my 30 days notice.Got an email offering 9 months half price 3 months full.Did not accept it.Two weeks later got offered 12 months half price :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,926 ✭✭✭thebiglad

I emailed to cancel, 1 week later nothing heard so I called them and said I am about to sign up to a new provider, do they have an offer. was told bluntly, no!!

Been with Virgin more than 10 years and barely had a discount in that time - signed up to Sky BB and f*** Virgin.

When I went through the sign up process, could have had Sky BB installed early next week, so wasn't so much of a rush to get a appointment as I expected but, its done now and with Virgin's approach, glad I am off.

Made the call today only 9 months offered even though I said sky would save me 120 euro - no go so I cancelled and my wife signed up…and don't get me started on their new phone AI assistant Cara!

Can't most people on VM now switch to Vodafone who sell on VM lines?

It's the alternative I would take.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,741 ✭✭✭NotShero

If Virgin FTTP is available to you, yes you can switch between Virgin, Vodafone, Sky and Digiweb.

Their FTTP rollout is still ongoing so some people would still only have their coax available to them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,816 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Only co-ax available to me with them, they are providing ftth in the newer estates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,409 ✭✭✭Mav11

ftth should be installed with the new contract. Just had it installed here even though I stay with vm.

The rollout is still happening, it wouldn't be available everywhere their coax is available yet.

You'll know it's available when 2Gb/5Gb shows as available for your Eircode on Virgin's website and it'll show on the ComReg broadband checker as Virgin Media / Fibre / 5,000Mbps.
