Yeah you'll need an engineer visit to install a new open eir fibre cable and ONT on the wall, it will probably follow the phone line route into your house.

You should be able to get GoMo to cancel Virgin Media for you under the new IAS switching process or you can cancel Virgin Media yourself but you'll need to give one months notice.

I'm out of contract with Virgin.
If I went with GOMO would that mean the router would have to be in the hall, or would they put it in another room for me? I want to be wired and not rely on WiFi for my Desktop which is in the dining room.

Yeah unfortunately it doesn't matter if your out of contract you'll need to give 1 months notice if cancelling yourself, GoMo wouldn't need to give notice.

They'll usually help within reason where you'd like it but it can depend on who you get on the day and they can't run the outdoor cable too far inside the house afaik.

Do GOMO have a CAP per month on that offer?

What do you mean by CAP? A data cap? No it's unlimited usage.

I meant a limit on the amount downloaded per month before they bitch or throttle.

Yeah no there's no data cap, that's more of a mobile plan only thing these days. Nearly all fixed providers don't have a fixed data cap anymore and wouldn't throttle for that reason.

There's a line in all providers T&Cs about unreasonable usage, but this should only be extremely high usage.

Do you have the option to request an engineer for installation during the signup process, or how do you arrange that?

No it'll know that you haven't had it installed yet and send you an engineer appointment booked for you by email a few minutes after the order. It'll show in your MyGoMo account too and you can reschedule it there if you need to.

Would it detect that you don't have the ont installed during the sign up process? When I was signing up it said something like congratulations you have the necessary hardware and can do a self install you don't need a technician to visit or words to that effect.

It's a great offer, the only issue for me is the hit-and-miss on where the router will be installed. I want it on my desk. Virgin had no issue putting it where I wanted it back in the day.

Yes I think it should but I think possibly if it's been some time since it was active or UAN is not given, they'll arrange an appointment to change out the ONT anyway once the order is placed.

You could try a support chat session and ask something like “can it be installed beside my virgin router that’s where I need it” and then screenshot their reply if they say it’s possible

You could maybe order it and leave the engineer come out and have a look and ask if they can install it where you'd like it, if they can't you could cancel the order as you'd be in your cooling off period still.

I was on chat and reached an agent, as the standard chat couldn't answer the question.

Anyway, the agent confirmed that it can not be installed in the room of choice. The ONT will only be installed at the point where the cable enters the house, in my case, that's just inside the front door in the hall.

To overcome the uncertainty of the location I ran a network cable from where I want the router back to where the phone cable enters the house, I also put a double socket there to power the ont. When the install was done I connected the cable to the ont and the router to the other end.

Afaik they can run the cable on the outside of the house but if there is ducting already in place they probably won't want to do that.

There's some other options like powerline adapters, wireless mesh or getting an ethernet cable installed from the ONT to where you need the router.

If you provide some more info on why you need it on your desk then that might trigger other alternative suggestions. "Back in the day" suggests it was a fair few years ago and there could be new technology that could be a valid alternative, and allow the ONT and router to be away from your desk.

    Just a suggestion.

Where the modem is would be the least of my worries

While wireless is handy, I'm a die-hard believer in a wired connection.

Wired (fiber or cable) broadband is generally the better option for speed, stability, and security. It provides consistent bandwidth that isn't disrupted by walls or network congestion.

    Fair enough.

Everything I use is over WiFi. Including WFH. I always use a third party router so my WiFi is reliable. My WiFi may not be as secure as Ethernet. But I follow security guidelines and am happy it’s a secure as can be for my needs. I keep it updated with security patches etc (I find Asus very good for this). Coupled with parental controls etc for younger members of the family.

The gamers in the house use power lines when gaming. Otherwise WiFi.

the exception I have is the smart tv and it’s peripherals which are indeed beside the router. That’s where our External Termination Unit it located on the exterior of the house.

Have a year left on my VIrgin 2 years, 2GB 50pm pack.

Just checked my own home for the availability of this in Tallaght and it’s not available as of yet. Deffo one to keep an eye on at that price but they’ll have to up their speed and hopefully they router is flawless too.

    Food for thought - cheers

Why would they need to up the speed? 500meg is more than enough for any domestic setting, a reliable 100meg is more than enough. The router supplied is very good, being a for life pricing you could always invest in a router yourself as you'll never need to change it.

Can you specify switchover date when you sign up? My eir contract runs till October. I asked in gomo chat if I could sign up now but do the switchover in September they said yes but I'm sceptical. Anyone done this yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,805 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

There is an option to specify the switch date during the sign-up I don't know how far forward it goes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,583 ✭✭✭Gadgetman496

How many free 13A sockets are required at the point of installation? Is it just one for the router, and how is the ONT powered?

I only have one single socket at the point it would be installed. Are extension leads an option if I need more than one?

    2 sockets, ONT and router.

    Extension lead is ok.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,583 ✭✭✭Gadgetman496

Does the supplied router have the option to port forward?

So i started the sign up process and it fixes the activation date for three days time and you can't change that but states you change the activation date late in the gomo app. So you have to perhaps take the chance of paying the activation and fist month fee and then hope you cAn extend the activation date sufficient to not hurt too much.

There's no Gomo app just your Mygomo on the website, my activation date was locked when I checked 2 days later.
