He could very well be. Culhane on the bench can cover 8 of Conan goes off and Doris can move to 6. Similarly if Doris bows off, Culhane can come straight in. I was really impressed with him last week against the Lions. He had some storming carries

Culhane has made good progress this year (injury period aside). Looks like a real prospect. I'd be surprised if he jumps Deegan for a CC final, but I wouldn't object.

Culhane is probably an important part of Leinster's short-medium term future. I'm not sure of that starts next week though. More likely next season.

Deegan was disappointing when given a chance in the Cup last year, perhaps the coaches feel he isn't at the level required .

Biggest decisions for the final are now at tight head and inside centre. Clarkson should start and I think his lack of involvement this week points to that happening. The fact Furlong still isn't ready to start a game after weeks out isn't a good sign either. I'd view this game as a shootout between himself and Slimani for who gets the bench role.

Osborne has played well in his last two appearances at 12. A lot more noise was made about his underperformance before the game against Toulon and not enough about his strong form since, but whatever. That Henshaw is starting with Ringrose would suggest that the former might start next week too. I think I'd go with Osborne though.

If you are worried about Furlongs ability to go 60+ minutes then I'd say you start him with Clarkson to come off the bench.

If you start Clarkson and he gets a knock 10/15 minutes in and Furlong isn't able for 60/70 minutes you are in trouble..

I really like that side - and great to see Usanov, Larmour, Lowe, Furlong all back in there from injury and hopefully in the mix for next week.

Almost everyone healthy and in the mix will have played across these two weekends before the final.

Would love a solid, reassuring game for Harry Byrne, especially off the tee to get his confidence back where it needs to be.

Delighted to see Culhane get the chance to continue building on his excellent form. He's kind of a forgotten man in wider Irish rugby circles, but he's definitely a blue chip prospect. He didn't have the hype coming out of U20s as someone like Brian Gleeson (who immediately followed him as the U20s No 8), but Culhane was also someone who really shone brightly at underage levels.

He won Player of the Tournament for the Irish U20s in 21/22 as they won a Grand Slam (the other players to win this award: 2021: Jack van Poortvliet, 2023: Marko Gazotti, 2024: Henry Pollock etc).

Does Lowe make the 23 if he goes well this weekend? Presume he would, so what happens with Reiko? If Henshaw starts at 12, then Osborne is likely out of the 23, given Frawley will be cover for 10. Would be very harsh to not pick Jimmy, he's been one of our best backs over the last while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

I doubt Jimmy makes it (unless there is an injury we don't know about). He's playing well and has rarely enough let us down, but tends to be on the outside.

I cannot see Rieko missing out. He's going to start in the 11 shirt.

Lowe could well be a candidate for the 23 shirt - if, he gets good gametime here and shows well. Having Rieko and Frawley in the 23 gives good flexibility to make changes. For a one-off game like a final, I could definitely see the attraction in having a game breaking player like Lowe on the 23; he doesn't have Osborne's versatility but he's still just a better player right now IMO.

Anyone have the Bordeaux team for this weekend? They're playing tomorrow.

Personally, I'd rather Reiko start at 13, and have Lowe/ JOB at 11/23. Think he can offer more of a threat there than Ringrose. We seemed to be finally using him more effectively in that role lately

Nah, I don't like Rieko at 13, think he's played all of his best rugby this season when he's been on the wing. I struggle to think of an effective performance from him in the centre, and even his try (and try assist for Keenan) last week came when he shifted to the wing.

I think of all those players (Ioane, Ringrose, Lowe, JOB), Ringrose would be rated the most highly by the coaching staff (I would have the same view) and is the least likely (if healthy) to miss the starting XV.

I just have not been impressed by Ringrose's performances this season at all. He's largely been a void in attack, and his defense has too often been a miss rather than a hit. Reiko was solid at 13, I don't think he gives up anything to Ringrose in defense, and could offer more in attack if we looked to employ him better. I concede he's been better at 11, but having him and Lowe in the team is better than just one of them imo.

Ringrose tends to have his best performances in europe compared to the league.

for example this season hes scored 3 tries in 9 appearances for leinster, 2 of those tries were scored in europe.

last season 4 of his 5 tries were in europe

in 2022 / 2023 4 of his 8 tries were in europe (3rd top try scorer in the competition)

in 2019 / 2020 6 of his 9 tries were in europe (2nd top try scorer in the competition)

in 2016 / 2017 3 of his 7 tries were in europe (5th top try scorer in the competition)

while hes not exactly a free scoring center he certainly holds his own.

Personally i keep him at 13 for defensive stability in that scramble defense that we will absolutely need against uh bay bay.

Thanks. Looks like a mixed team? Few first teamers on the bench. Guess not a million miles off what Leinster are doing.

    whos who of whos not

the spread has gone from -16 to -22 after the teams named.

a quick start from leinster here and we could see a big score.

the main thing is to be focused on this game and the plays and patterns and not have on eye on next week, and hopefully ospreys players are thinking of their sand castles on Tywyn beach.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Last Ospreys appearance for Jac Morgan - maybe they’ll produce something for that, and they’ve been a team we’ve struggled to put away comprehensively in the past, but if we don’t have too much for that side we’ve got big problems.

Leinster rarely do quick starts anymore and certainly aren't sure of a win with 50 mins played.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,085 ✭✭✭50HX

Jgp is the only real one.

Anyone else whilst being a loss, things can be re jigged but make do.

I'd have him wrapped in bubble wrap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Joe McCarthy would be a massive loss too, with Snyman & Baird already hurt. Having to start Mangan or Deeny in a European Cup Final would be pretty disastrous.

Mangan deserves a slot in the 23...in form

I agree a big big loss but nothing in tne order of JGP loss esp if the 10 is not going well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

He played his first game last week in months, and yeah he was very good, but it’s not exactly a long track record of form. I’d be happy with him on the bench, but he’s an enormous step down in every way from Ryan & McCarthy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,376 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Stormers losing is a great result for Leinster. Any sort of win tomorrow leaves us in second place, guaranteeing a home QF and potential home SF.

Glasgow don't look great really. Lacking power up front and squad depth is thin right now. Ulster came right back into the game when subs were brought on.

Second place will be a great result after that season

If Glasgow lose in the play offs, does home advantage go to their victors or the next top seed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 689 ✭✭✭user060916

With the way the finals location have fine funnily enough might not be much difference between 1st and 2nd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,906 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

And so that Benetton result may come back to haunt us, should we get a BP win tomorrow and get to a final. Makes it more irritating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,418 ✭✭✭Thrashssacre

Even if they don't they've no stadium to play it in (allegedly gonna be in ravenhill)

Delighted with that Cardiff result. A home semi with a win tomorrow now and a potential final away in South Africa is a different kettle of fish to playing Glasgow away (or wherever it ends up being, should they get there).
