Maybe he was struggling to get work. I don't know. And I don't think he's the ultimate victim either. I've said numerous times he hasn't helped his own case. I don't see it entirely black and white though.

Partly because of him, the system of recording non crime hate incidents by the British police is being reformed. That's a good thing in my book because of the way they were being weaponised.

Reminds me a bit of when Nigel Farage had his bank account closed, and loads of people here were cheering that. Even though I think Farage is a populist charlatan, I didn't agree with his bank account being closed. If that was allowed to stand then who would be next? Which I think was Martin Niemöller's point.

That was poor form, how else was he suppose to receive his non declared 5 million pound bribe.

Indeed- he’s far from being a victim. He has never recognised and acknowledged that his words and actions have consequences. Even if the UK police were over zealous in arresting him instead of pursuing real and serious criminality, he has taunted the thin line of what’s acceptable decent and lawful in his interactions with the trans community.

Whilst some small % of the trans community are absolute nutters and are out to cancel anyone who doesn’t subscribe fully to their ideology, he had every opportunity to walk away. Shirley he had enough intelligence to distinguish between ordinary innocent people who were struggling with their sexual and gender identity and an extremist bunch of nitwits who would have faded away had they not been given the time of day.

The topic is not a straightforward one- it’s very complex as we’ve seen-but feeding the trolls 3 square meals a day certainly isn’t the right response

He never had his bank account closed. He had an account at a boutique bank, Coutts. That account was closed.

Couldn't have England's number one grifter using the same kind of account as the rest of us.

Ya, reputation and a private bank isn't exactly the same as him having his HSBC account closed...

Of course it isn't, hence the false narrative presented above. I remember one former poster who spent literal months attempting to gaslight us on this subject.

On the flip side, it's a nice demonstration of how important factchecking is.

So it was closed because he didn't meet the financial threshold.

If they only held on until he got the 5 million pound bribe.

The theme continues of defending pretty horrid people.

The owners of Coutts, NatWest, offered Farage a normal account but he decided to lie and throw a tantrum instead. It is objectively wrong to say that he was debanked or had his account taken away.

His account at Coutts Bank wasn't a bank account? Interesting.

Funny how the CEO of Coutts and parent Nat West both ended up resigning because of it .. 🤔

Not going to rehash the argument, but you can read the reasons why he was debanked below, which included being "not compatible with Coutts given his publicly-stated views"

But you lot are okay with it anyway. As Churchill famously didn't say, but might if he were alive today - The fascists of the future will call themselves anti-fascist. Or maybe he'd say "the people gas lighting you will say you are the gas lighter" 😀

Getting back to Graham Linehan's arrest by armed police at Heathrow Airport for a couple of jokes he posted on unsocial media. This wasn't just an attack on Linehan's rights it was an attack on everyone's rights.

The focus on his political views are irrelevant, he wasn't arrested for opinions he's expressed about Trump, ICE or Gaza.

How have my rights as an Irish person, living in Ireland, been attacked by an arrest by the English police?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,091 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

Shane Coleman knew he was on safe enough ground there. He'd know well enough that Linehan has no right to stop RTE broadcasting Fr Ted and that polite public opinion would be on his side.

I don't understand here; you're saying Shane Coleman shouldn't have interviewed Linehan, but at the same time decrying the media for not interviewing him often enough?

But on the wider point, you can't seriously read what Linehan is saying about our entire country being anti-Semitic and blaming the Palestinians for their own genocide, and think, yeah, Irish media are the problem here.

Imagine someone saying those 21 people who died on Bloody Sunday had it coming because of the IRA, or if the IRA hadn't bombed that pub, the Birmingham Six would never happened so it's their own fault?

You've just breezily condoned identical sentiments because the guy making the comments doesn't like trans people.

It's genuinely terrifying how much people are in sway to such a minor issue.

    Prove what, my opinion?

Well your right to travel to England without fear of being arrested is. I too am Irish living in the RoI but have close family in England as do many, I visit them regularly.

Sally Rooney already has experienced this intimidation factor for her stated support for Palestine Action so not as far fetched as you might think.

This wasn't just an attack on Linehan's rights it was an attack on everyone's rights.

How were your personal been rights attacked? Please give examples and be specific.

    In your own time.

    So nothing.

We were told yesterday that this is the same as Nazi Germany but nobody can prove that either.

I've lived in England for over 15 years. My rights have not been violated not once despite your assertion otherwise.

I have absolutely no fear about travelling to England and being arrested. I also don't tweet about inciting violence.

So, again I'll ask how have my rights been attacked?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,309 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

It's not about me, it's about the general encroachment on individual rights particularly in Britain with police taking an increasingly active interest in what people say online.

Edit: This can be taken as a general reply to those claiming 'their' rights aren't being violated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,445 ✭✭✭✭ancapailldorcha

There is no encroachment but people do use social media to break the law so it makes sense for the police to be looking at that.

Did you not say "it was an attack on everyone's rights."

Now you're saying "it's not about me", so you don't include yourself in everyone?

Where did I say Coleman should not have interviewed Linehan?

I'm saying they invited him on giving him a length of rope to hang himself, which it sounds like he did and they knew he would. They were looking for entertainment not a serious discussion. It's easy enough to bat away stuff like his conflation of Ireland's anti-Israel stance with anti-semitism, for instance.

From what I recall RTE interviewed him once in 2019 and it caused such a backlash that they never did again (*)

    https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2019/jan/23/rte-picketed-in-row-over-graham-linehan-transgender-comments

A picket organiser, Noah Halpin, told the gathering that RTÉ should have omitted Linehan and included more than two trans people in the panel of 10 contributors.

    Indeed.

A trailer for the programme included a clip from a pre-recorded interview with Linehan in which he said: “You do not tell kids that they have been born into the wrong body, just as you don’t tell [people with anorexia] that they are fat.”

Speaking to the Irish Independent before the broadcast, Linehan said his views on transgender issues were based on difficulties faced by his transgender and lesbian friends because of trans activism.

His views seemed reasonable enough at that time. But, trans activists demanded that he be cancelled and they got their way.

(*) it seems he was interviewed on RTE Radio 1 in 2023 as well. Twice in seven years is not much considering all that's happened to him.

He got progressively more extreme since 2019 so he tends to not get invites to anything....

Again, you seem to be utterly fixated on the media here and completely ignoring the absolutely heinous comments of Linehan. I hope you're trying to deflect from what you know is a completely indefensible position, and that you don't actually endorse what Linehan is saying about Palestine, but your refusal to actually condemn what he's said is a bit worrying tbh.

But back to the media, I suppose the question, is what has Linehan done in the interim that he should be interviewed about anything?

He's not an expert on any transgender issues, he's not a doctor, a psychologist, a sociologist, a lawyer, nor does he have any direct life experience of transgender issues. So why on earth would you have him on a serious discussion about trans issues?

He got a slot on the world's most popular podcast not long ago based on his anti-trans angry man persona, and that's fine for Joe Rogan, but expecting Prime Time to have him on for more unhinged ranting is a long shot tbh.

If he ever comes around, he'd make a fascinating interviewee about how to go down rabbit holes. The Observer tried a few months ago, it is tough reading. Read the very last paragraph and tell me, with a straight face, this is a guy who deserves more air time on Irish media.

Linehan is simply not that much of a draw that he should be on prime time frequently. He has the trans and Gaza issue but apart from that, is not noticed that much.

Be interesting if he ever does make a new comedy.

He hasn't made a new comedy in a very long time. He was barely involved in Motherland (He directed and co-wrote the pilot). It'll be much easier for him to earn from the victim-industrial complex than creating comedy.

It's awfully sad and pathetic but this is what he wants.

The thread isn't about his views on Israel or ICE or who supports his views on those ( I don't for what it's worth) but on whether his tweet merited being arrested by five police officers on Heathrow.

I don't feel his post, nasty as it was, merited a criminal charge nor the grandstanding of arrest by five officers. If it did than countless reddit posts, Facebook posts, tweets etc. from across the political spectrum and across differing idealogies would also merit such a response. Much as I don't like a lot of things online we're veering into very dodgy territory to police speech to that degree, PARTICULARLY, when such a partisan approach to what is and isn't policed is adopted.

Aren't all police at Heathrow airport armed?

I'd say anyone being arrested at a British airport would be done so by 'armed police'. Not that I agree with the situation at all but that's a tad on the sensationalist side, almost sounds like he arrived to the gate to meet policemen with guns drawn.

I think there's a dedicated policing unit for airports, especially Heathrow and they're armed.
