The huge difference was that covid was (is) highly transmissible person-to-person

If you had to get bitten by a bat or lick rat pîss to get it, we'd probably have never heard of it

It's pretty sad to see people still in their head fighting the 'battles' of five years ago, the "it's a conspiracy, something something UN this something something WHO that something something Luke O'Neill the other".

I'm afraid that you've mistaken me dor another post but I'm upset that you're upset if that helps? As I know you like to grandstand and make threads about you.

I will remain open to discussions about the ongoing event (it medically ends well after the new reel. You may rage against your own fears by hiding in your cynicism. You do you...).

I am just questioning why the media keep trying to push the story

Because it drives traffic. This is really not that complicated.

My original comment on the thread touches on why I think the media is pushing this story and it is connected to the pandemic treaty deadline which was missed just over a week ago. It seems that perhaps some wealthy corporates might be dying to have this pandemic treaty signed as they stand to benefit financially - I mean; what are the odds that a potential pandemic starts literally the week of the deadline to agree a new pandemic treaty?!

And it certainly doesn't require this level of tinfoil hattedness.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if some big Pharma company exploits this episode . They probably have a vaccine ready and waiting for a big uptake . This media frenzy will feed into that and some pharma company will use this to peddle their wares

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 715 ✭✭✭Marcos

Say no more. Look at Moderna shares skyrocketing because they are researching a vaccine for hantavirus. Hmm, I wonder will Ursula Von Der Leyen sign the EU to another multi billion euro contract via sms this time like she did with the Pfizer vaccine?

When most of us say "social justice" we mean equality under the law opposition to prejudice, discrimination and equal opportunities for all. When Social Justice Activists say "social justice" they mean an emphasis on group identity over the rights of the individual, a rejection of social liberalism, and the assumption that unequal outcomes are always evidence of structural inequalities.

I'm not the one making vague references to supposed "WHO agendas", but whatever. If you don't want to stick to facts that's up to you.

This is getting serious. I now own nothing and I'm not happy, the 5G chip has kicked in from all the chemtrails and I'm out of Ivermectin and crystals. Can someone please help?

I've got a roll of extra-thick aluminium foil (none of the old cheap stuff that tears if you look at it); also a UV steriliser machine guaranteed to kill all known pathogens - buy quick before the price shoots through the roof. The foil will definitely deflect 5G, 6G and all known G's, so you will be safe. Guaranteed. 😁😁

Who should we be trusting in this instance; click bait weirdos, ivermectin salesmen, galaxy brained podcast bros

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 416 ✭✭SpoonyMcSpoon

You are the only one introducing quacks and cranks; I have been only referring to the official health experts who are all saying hantavirus is no risk to the wider public as it is not transmissible like covid. The media are trying to make it a bigger deal than it is and that is the only reason we are still hearing about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,752 ✭✭✭silliussoddius

Are the media reporting the risks as reported by the WHO etc.

Any I have looked at are, if they are overstating the risk that would be another thing.

On the other hand if it wasn’t in the media we would be subjected to the usual “why aren’t they talking about this”.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,080 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Isn't everyone doing what they're supposed to do? The relevant government's are quarantining the infected people, the WHO is saying it's nothing to panic about, the media are making stories that people want to click on and pharmaceuticals are making a vaccine that people might want to buy.

Is anyone not doing what we expect?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 416 ✭✭SpoonyMcSpoon

So you don’t trust the media is what you are saying as you say that they are printing stories which generate clicks as opposed to reporting on facts? Tell me, do you agree with the WHO and public health officials that there is no risk to the wider public because this is not a very transmissible virus? It is not to do with quarantining measures but the fact the virus itself is not widely transmissible, that is what the official message is.

    Media frenzy ?

Have not seen any frenzy except on certain media and doubt if they will start pushing Hantavirus vaccines .

Be more in line to pay for Shingles vaccine for all immunosuppressed or over 60s .

If they aren't going to shell out for that they can .…right off with a Hantavirus vaccine ! 😊

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,752 ✭✭✭silliussoddius

Any evidence of this? Why would a company be waiting for a big uptake when it's not serious issue?

    But since you mentioned exploitation

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,596 ✭✭✭Billy Mays

Jon Stewart did a good bit on the American media's overreaction to this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,452 ✭✭✭✭iamwhoiam

Absolutely agree with you about the shingles vaccine . I read HIQA recommended this to the Government but they deemed it too expensive to make it cost effective 😡

I just paid €500 for a shingles vaccine and am so very aware that I am very lucky to be able to do that. Not everyone can and its shocking that its not available to over 65 ‘s

I saw how it affected a few people I know and was willing to spend it to protect myself .

But Pharma always find a way to scare enough people to peddle their wares and I can see them exploiting this episode

It's not binary, trust everything 'the media' says or trust nothing it says. The media is a business and supply and demand has an influence. That's just capitalism doing its thing. Controversially, Public Service Broadcasters like RTE and BBC are better on these topics because they're not as reliant on clicks for advertising income. Their news tends to be much less sensationalist.

I'm at a disadvantage in this discussion because I know almost nothing about Hantavirus. I hadn't even heard of it until a couple of weeks ago. I'd say it's likely you hadn't known much about it either, correct me if you're an actual expert on Hantavirus.

So, I have little choice but to take the preponderance of the news, aggregate it, and weight it according to how reliable each outlet generally is, then do the same for public health organisations like the WHO.

If you follow that procedure, you'll probably arrive at the same place as me. That there was an outbreak of a pretty uncommon virus and the relevant authorities are quarantining the affected people. The health organisations say its not very transmissible. So I don't really worry about it because I don't have any more knowledge on hantavirus. If more information comes out, I'll reevaluate.

I've laid out how I read the news and the conclusions I've reached. How do you get your information on Hantavirus?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭goldsparkle

My understanding of what I read online is that there's different versions of hantavirus. It's a version that someone would get spring cleaning attics maybe with mice and rat droppings. Apparantly it's not a nice virus but it's not a huge threat.

There's another version if the virus where you can get it the same way and it's transmissible from person to person.

I am not majorly concerned but I am wary about it.

Countries took home people from the ship and put them in quarantine. But what is quarantine facilities within each country?

Does Ireland have any quarantine facilities? Is it like asking people to go home and self isolate for a few weeks.

My concern is that you really can't trust people to do the right thing? My concern as well is that many people lack manners and hygiene. Even after all of the information about hygiene and germs at the time of Covids. It seems as if so many people relies on the government to tell them to do the right thing and how to cough and sneeze and wash their hands properly. Not body cares.

My partner likes cruises. Me not so much. The last cruise I was on was in 2022 and it was awful. So many people on board the ship were walking around coughing and I saw their coughs. It was coming from deep within their chest. But nobody had manners. They were walking around buffet areas coughing into the open and coughing everywhere. No attempt to cover their mouths or germs. Just cough, cough, cough, cough, cough as if it's so normal. I got off that ship so sick but never my partner even though we were together. It wasn't covid either because I covid tests along the way but it was still absolutely horrible. Cruises are so expensive and it doesn't make sense to spend such an amount on a weeks all inclusive holiday just to be exposed to sickness. I had to fill in a comment card at the end suggesting that they implement a hygiene campaign on board because it's not right to have so many people so close together and have so many people be so bad with hygiene and manners. I don't think I would ever be able to stomach another cruise. So much gluttony on board.

Since then I did European breaks and all the travelling I did, I haven't got sick from travelling on buses, planes etc. It was just on the last cruise ship.

When Covid came to an end I always thought the government should have maintained a hygiene campaign of some sort. Its good just for general health.

I posted an article that I should not have done as it was spreading false news. I unreservedly apologise to all for this

Article eluded that there was a "Small hantavirus outbreak in Scotland apparently" but it is false news

@goldsparkle I would disagree that IT IS NOT a huge threat.

Hantavirus fatality rate is far far higher than Coronavirus:

    • Coronavirus is around 3.4%
    • The case fatality rate for hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is approximately 40% among those who develop severe disease.

One "advantage" of the higher fatality rate is Hantavirus kills the host too fast so doesnt spread as far as Covid might in the same time. Apparently an efficient virus is one that DOES NOT Kill its host because it can spread farther

Also keep in mind - one of the things we learned during Covid. Viruses evolve in infected peoples bodies to produce more efficient variants or more deadly. Also Hantavirus has an incubation period is 6 weeks vs something like a few days when compared to Covid.

Hantavirus does not easily spread like Covid / Airborne. With hantavirus you need to be in close proximity for a while and maybe also ingesting droplets from that patient.

With respect to human to human version - thats called the Andes Variant. this seems to originate in Argentina. I think that was where the first couple who died of this from that ship were - bird watching near a rubbish tip.

Cancell all Scottish flights into Ireland

The media really do love to blow things up, can't wait to see if anything comes from 'covid restrictions review'
