Screenshot is from the rulebook. The cynical foul rule 5.45 mentions goal scoring opportunity, and say that is defined under important terms which is a completely different section. That's where it mentions possession and that's what I shared.

They don't make it easy in fairness.

    enough whinging about the format.

Its on us to win 2 games, nobody else. Disappointed in Queally reaction yesterday and excuses

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,861 ✭✭✭Mastermcgrath

at least that’s something. We can have a decent cut off Limerick next week with him on the team. I would love if Queally went for broke and threw Aussie and Tadgh in from the start next week aswell.

We have won 2 inter county hurling matches this year. all grades. Two. The 2nd penalty happened because yet again a waterford hurler failed to life the ball- Mark Fitzgerald. The Cork player didn't and was in on goal. 2 of Corks first 3 points came from a waterford player - under no pressure- failing to lift the ball. It's a failing that's costing us again and again and again. Happens probably 20 times in a game. Happens the opposition significantly less. We can moan all we like about the format but the facts speak for themselves. The only ones who can change things are ourselves.

You hit the nail on the head. Our basics are so bad. We can't pick the ball off the ground and then when we do have possession we hit aimless balls back to the opposition. What have the management team been at with these players? Do we learn from our mistakes? Do they work on video analysis? We were so flat against Cork after a 2 week break. It is embarrassing reading some of the comments here and listening to the likes of John Mullane whinging about the format. Even if it was straight knockout we still wouldn't go far in the championship. Between Davy and now Queally we've had two very poor managers. All we do whing about injuries and the format. We have as good a panel as anyone in the county. Another comment on here saying we're a small county. We have the same population as Clare and look how they have performed in the championship. Also the way Lohan and Pat Fitzgerald were able to work together despite the bitterness between Lohan and Davy Fitzgerald. All we do is look for excuses. It is absolute bullshit and it needs to stop

it’s obviously a ‘pressure/nerves/big occasion' thing that causes the fumbling/failed jab/roll lifts etc……kids as young as 6/7 can jab and roll lift trying to say that senior players lack these basic skills is nonsense.

Can’t keep blaming managers either. What manager didn’t we blame? We’ve always been short a few players and expect the same lads to lead the team and carry us every day.

No your right you can't keep blaming managers. However Quelly was talking tactics with Dan down in front of me during the game. All they were doing was moving players around, like they were pretending to play chess. Dan a good player, I believe a good coach, a good motivator. But I'm not sure a man who hasn't progressed onto Lego blocks from duplo should be close to a tactics board, and if you are the one listening to him, your the bigger fool!!

Management on the sideline discussing tactics and moving players around into different positions? Farsical stuff altogether sure

If we had a good manager it would paint a clearer picture but we haven't had a good management team since Cahill and Beavins. Why was Shanahan not asked back with Laois in 2024? Why are players so low in confidence? I would back them players to the moon. Dessie Hutchinson was flying under Cahill. Then Cahill ran us into the ground in 2022 after the loss to Limerick. He done the same with Tipp in "23 and "24. Then in comes the spoofer from Clare and sticks Dessie in midfield. We need a good coach and gameplan to allow these players to flourish

If Jason Ryan takes over and if Dessie commits to another season then we could see him back to his best

Managers playing manager. Just moving the chairs on the Titanic, but to the trained eye doing **** all.

I'm a darragh lyons fan, but I don't think cork were filled with fear when he came on in the 65 minute. Especially as the lads taken off were hurling great. Surely if we were throwing the kitchen sink at it, Aussie should have come on!

Left it until now to post about match due to rawness of defeat! Firstly the players left it all out there and can't be faulted for effort and spirit. However once again lady luck was nowhere to be seen... we really can't buy a break in this format. Two players off early with injury and then Stephen having to go off too. Thirdly on to the referee Stack. First black was obviously a mistake... attacker didn't have possession of the ball, thankfully Billy bailed us out. We did well down to 14 but who's to say we could have built up a lead during that period if we had the full 15.

Second black card and penalty decided the game. How he saw fit to come to that decision when Fagan was not the last defender is beyond me. An absolute cruel decision at a vital moment in the game. You can be guaranteed that we will see a similar situation later on in the championship where the referee will issue a 21 yard free and yellow card.

Limerick now next weekend but we all know it's all but done.

A lot on here commenting on the format. Plain and simple this round robin format is a less equitable system. Wouldn't it be great to have similar matches in Walsh Park against our neighbours KK or Wexford. The sooner they do away with provincial championship the better or play it in conjunction with an "ALL" Ireland championship that we don't have an automatic right to anymore!

we are just turning into a bunch of moaners and a laughing stock blaming the format. We haven't won a game since February.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 979 ✭✭✭Deskjockey

The first black card was a mistake from the ref and luckily we weathered the storm. Mistakes are going to happen.

The second black card, as much as it pains me to say it as a Waterford fan, was a nailed on black card and what the black card was brought in for. It was a mistake from Fagan in that split second. Like would he have been better off just not fouling and yes they would have had the goal but at least we would have been 15 v 15 for the last 10 minutes. It's indiscipline

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 143 ✭✭5948ai

Sorry I don't agree. I'm sure we'll see a similar situation without a black card and penalty if player isn't last defender.

carefull now your not allowed 🚫 to express any views like that in last paragraph.

Stephen Bennett going off injured was a major turning point. Class hurler and i hope we haven't seen the last of him. Although Cork were missing their first choice full back and centre back. I think if Waterford can beat Limerick the next day, and other results go their way then they can still get out of the group. Spare a thought here for Ephie Fitzgerald and the footballers getting trounced by London. It's a tough job for everyone involved keeping the Waterford senior footballing show going really.

The closest Waterford have come to winning an all Ireland was under Derek McGrath, but then again the game has moved on since then i suppose. I still think he'd be worth giving another chance if he does want the job.

Didn’t he go for the Wexford job a few years back

They job could easily be available soon as well as the Waterford job

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 979 ✭✭✭Deskjockey

We certainly will. But we will see other times when the black card is used correctly also. There's no mention of last defender in the rule to my memory, am open to correction on that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,861 ✭✭✭Mastermcgrath

No chance, McGrath is yesterdays man.

I beleive Queally will get another year with Joxer O’Connor coming in after next year, hopefully with a successful under 20 campaign behind him and start building a new team around that talented group he won a minor with last year. There’s no more than a year left for many of the current senior group anyway, we thought we’d definetly see some retirements in the close season this year but in fairness to Queally seemed to be able to get everyone on board and rowing in, I think Queally is the best bet to go back to the well with these lads one more time and who knows, our luck might eventually turn

RTE news : Hurling visibility a problem in Waterford - Mullane

    http://www.rte.ie/sport/hurling/2026/0511/1572856-hurling-visibility-a-problem-in-waterford-mullane/

As a county we need to move beyond moaning at the Hurling Format and games not shown Live on RTE. All counties are in the same boat...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,861 ✭✭✭Mastermcgrath

Did you read the article ?

His point is in relation to coverage and promotion of the games and just giving Waterford as an example.
3 of our 4 games were behind a pay wall including our 2 home games which have low ticket availability due to capacity.
But ok we need to stop moaning as you say at least young people of Waterford can watch over 100 soccer games live at the World Cup next month considering there’s been nowhere for them to watch the county hurling team play this year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,350 ✭✭✭ForestFire

Wrote this 2 years ago above….Gaa+, or GAA beo or whatever its called is killing the "medium" counties.

Kids have no visibility, and even with all the tickets in the world, some people simple follow from home for whatever reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 379 ✭✭Dammo

I think Mullane and others have a point. Hurling is a minority sport even within the GAA, never mind comparing it to other sports. It need full exposure and to be as widely viewed as possible. Putting it behind a paywall doesn’t help.

Lack of consistency around black card is emphasised by incident with Stephen ironically against Cork last year.
