I think Ogbu and Kyne have good name recognition from general election. Kyne has been a TD and was FG chief whip so, again, higher profile. As other have said, transfers will decide the outcome. But if left voters transfer to Ogbu then she does have a chance. Otherwise, Kyne might pull off the impossible and win a bye-election for a government party.

Separately, I wonder should this thread be in the "Politics" forum? Would it get more traction there?

Anyone got a handle on where Thomas's transfers might go if he is eliminated before the last two? My gues is they'd slightly favour Kyne over the left?

like the Dublin rose 2026 finalist we all know who will be selected.

HHow in hell are the greens on 6%,seems mad to me,haven't met anyone voting green and after PBP and Denman Rook putting the boot into poor Niall Murphy surely he has no chance of getting near 6%.I see the MOE is 4% so 2% could be about right for the greens.

The poll really tells us very little.

The margin of error is such that the order could change.

For someone to be a clear favourite in a by-election, they need to be in the mid-twenties and 10 percentage points above their nearest challenger.

All the poll will tell us I reckon is the state of the race.

I reckon it is between Kyne and Thomas, but I don't think Ogbu is that close to them. I'm not surprised at all that Ogbu is there btw. There is a traditional Labour base in Galway that would have gone from Higgins to Connolly (who don't forget is gene-pool Labour). With Connolly gone it's not a surprise to see a sizeable chunk of that vote go back to Labour.

The Dublin Bay South by-election poll wasn't accurate in its percentages, but it was accurate in that Bacik won, and that Geoghegan was her challenger.

I wouldn't be suprised if the final three is Kyne or Thomas in 1st, the left candidate and Kyne or Thomas in third. Essentially, whoever goes out first between Kyne and Thomas will likely get the other over the line.

Thomas is ex Fianna Fail. Enough said. Any link to that party is toxic these days.

I think he'll get plenty of first preferences though. I'm not sure how transfer friendly he'll be.

I think Kyne will do well so it'll probably be between the two of them for the seat.

If Labour stay ahead of Sinn Fein, it will be an important test of whether SF voters will actually transfer to them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,979 ✭✭✭For Petes Sake

There is a FF candidate and another gene-pool FF candidate (Welby) who will give him transfers. Whether it will be enough to keep him ahead of Kyne remains to be seen.

Not necessarily. I read somewhere that Welby isn't showing a transfer pattern to Thomas. FF folks tend to despise people that leave their ranks. Welby will most likely transfer to Kyne. FF transferred to FG in massive numbers here in the general election. FFG don't want II making anymore ground. Welby is actually ex PDs too along with Grealish. I'd say Welby was convinced to run to help the government candidates. He never had a hope himself. Fairly useless councillor. Thomas is hated by the Taoiseach so that might help him in some ways.

So hard to call this one but I think Kyne will edge it now after the poll result.

That RTÉ "debate" wasn't really worth anything. Good for the 6 candidates to get wetted I guess but nobody stood out by design.

I don't think the FF link is the reason for his toxicity, which I think means he will have a difficulty on transfers. I can't see him getting many transfers from any of the left candidates. Apart from SF, if anyone considers them "left".

Does the priority of issues shown up in this poll seem odd to anyone else? Particularly when compared to national polling. Much more focused on infrastructure than cost or health than we usually see?

I wonder about the polling method they use on landlines in this day and age which as far as I know isn't used for national polling which is mostly online or occasionally face to face. Even when balanced for age the category of person who uses a landline would surely heavily lean towards people who own their own home as opposed to renters?

I've stuck a few quid on Mide @ 11/2. Reckon it'll be between the top left dog and Kyne for the seat and I'd make her marginal favourite to occupy the former slot. If Im had to pick a winner to save my life rfight now I'd probably say Kyne but he's 6/5 with Sky bet so…

nationally, Housing & Cost of Living is tops. Traffic dominates Galway, tis an obsession. Public Transport is odd too, you don't see that in other districts

The thing about road infrastructure being the top issue is, who do you vote for? The ringroad is coming regardless of who gets elected in two weeks.

The timing of the bypass planning approval helps FFG but I cannot see it being built in the next 10 years. There will be more objections, all the way to Europe for sure and who knows if the money is there in years to come.

Sad to see that nobody cares about the climate/environment anymore.

Tonn na Clé have released a statement calling for Helen Ogbu to be included in the RTÉ debates. Makes sense, but the statement itself looks like a mistake.

Calling for Ogbu's inclusion at 12% but not Nic Fhionnlaoich at 9% or Murphy at a credible 6% reinforces a partisan "leading candidate" narrative which overstates one poll. It also basically calls Ogbu's exclusively racist when the criteria has nothing to do with that.

Why no statement on Nic Fhionnlaoich's call for Irish language debates? Why not use it to call for more debates? Why exclusively mention Ogbu? Why no statement on the spat between Murphy and Rooke?

I think this is bordering on a most favoured candidate statement, which would appear to undermine the point of Tonn na Clé in the first place.

Crazy statement by the Independent Ireland, essentially conceding the narrative that Noel Thomas is the frontrunner

“Noel doesn’t seem to be pulling in the city on second [preferences] so it’s all to play for,” Independent Ireland’s Michael Fitzmaurice said.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,302 ✭✭✭✭zell12

II are playing down his popularity, otherwise voter will think he is a shoo-in and will vote another candidate. Enough voters like so, means an unelected Noel

I'd give Thomas my Number 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,156 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

I'm guessing it's pitched primarily at committed FFG voters who definitely don't want a left-wing TD. Nudging them to give Thomas a lower preference if they consider him a lesser evil than Ogbu or whoever…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,587 ✭✭✭sgthighway

I'll be putting Thomas Number 2…………….. from the bottom which will be the Niall Murphy. Keane will get my Number 1 followed by Kyne. This is a West Election and people voting are more interested in getting stuff done locally than nationally in this specific election. Might as well vote in someone who will get something done for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,078 ✭✭✭✭Mrs OBumble

In fairness, I have the bottom spot reserved for AJ.

    Even Noel gets above him.

The 2026 Galway West by-election in Ireland is being held to fill a vacant parliamentary seat. Staying informed about global events like this, along with opportunities such as apna ghar program, can help people understand both international politics and local financial support options.

Not a snowball's chance in hell will Welby's vote transfer to Kyne after Gateway.. -gate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 525 ✭✭✭ax530

Public Transport linked with Roads so that would explain why at top of list. Plus Barna bus route is a big topic so people would have mentioned it.

There will be plenty of localised voting so transfers between Kyne, Thomas, Welby could be localised.

Same within the Irish speaking candidates and city based.

Green often do well on polls as people like to see themselves as considerate to environmental issues, often not having overall interest in politics or candidates so just pick green party.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭GippyGup

Once again the This Week In Politics debate isn't really a debate because Kyne, Keane, and Thomas have no incentive to debate each other because they want each others' transfers. RTÉ made a big mistake only having 4 candidates, who largely represent one section of society

The candidates with the small pre-recorded snippets came across much better than the suits in studio.

What was the Gateway issue? I heard that Welby is telling his voters to give #2 to Kyne. Orders from HQ (Grealish).

Kyne just said on TWIP that he is expecting transfers from Welby as another centrist politician.
