He will be in their 23 strongest squad. Would have been 4th choice for Leinster next season so makes sense. Fair play to him and delighted he was offered a pro contract, he has been great this season with the injuries. Peter Dooley returning is an odd one but as 4th choice (at best) you'd assume he won't be eating into much of the wage budget.

No, connacht have signed Francoise van wyk from bath who will most likely be first choice

Jordan Duggan coming back from injury, so between him and Bohan as back up

Yeah they have Bohan, Peter Dooley and Jordan Duggan. Dooley has been injured a good bit (I think) and Duggan hasn't been very good. He's OK but Cahir would be an improvement.

I think so too, but maybe it's a 1 year thing while they wait and see how Boyle & McCarthy recover from injury.

Porter's minutes will be managed going into a RWC, and Jack Boyle could be out till 2027 with an achilles injury.

I'd still rather see Paddy McCarthy & Alex Usanov get the vast bulk of minutes though in that scenario than Dooley, who is an inferior player to Cahir IMO.

Worth noting that we're not getting the same Peter Dooley who went West. He has imo improved while there and hopefully will maintain that level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Really? I actually think the exact opposite - I wouldn't really mind the guy back who went across, but think he's kind of done at the top level now. I'm saying that more as a reflection on just aging than respective coaching fwiw.

No one is expecting him to come in and by as dynamic as Paddy McCarthy or Jack Boyle, but the level he should be better than tbh is what Jerry Cahir delivered for us this year. I can't think of a bad game Cahir played for us. From a brilliant starting debut against Zebre (with a try), to a phenomenal 38 mins off the bench against a gargantuan LAR pack (his tackling in that game was excellent), lots of good URC performances, a superb 77 mins off the bench against Sale in Europe and a couple of decent cameos against a good Toulon scrum on Saturday (including helping win a scrum pen at half time when we were massively under the cosh) - he's been so much more than we could have hoped he would be.

Delighted for him he's got an opportunity to continue his career as a pro, and wish him all the best out west.

Hope I'm wrong on Dooley - but haven't seen much to suggest otherwise.

Even if he has improved, he is still very average, and at 32 when next season starts isn't going to get much better. I have no issue with the signing if he is there as an extra body on a low salary but as other have said above, it's a strange signing.

I always find it hard to judge whether a player moving to Connacht has improved or not. He went from playing in a very good leinster team, to playing in a pretty poor connacht team. He hasn't been part of the connacht revival in the second half of this season so can't judge him on that.

I wouldn't be surprised if he looks pretty good again playing in a leinster pack.

It might make sense if they just want him for a year to cover Boyle's recovery. Cahir would have been better, but rumour is leinster offered him 1 year contract and connacht offered him a 2 year contract so he took it.

Was the Dooley rumour not in relation to emergency cover, i.e. the role Ed Byrne ended up taking?

Usanov looks good so I'd rather he was the fourth choice ahead of Dooley, tbh.

New central contract until 2028 for Hugo Keenan.

The good news keeps on coming!

Compared to this time last year after the bank holiday its nice to be able look forward to another European final.

Pack were brilliant. Porter's best game since NZ tour in 2022? So good to see Clarkson deliver such an important performance.

Nice to also read a grown-up from Leinster in the media this wk.

“It wasn’t polished, but it was a good pressure game, where we had to find our way out of some holes,” said Bleyendaal. “A bit of adversity, the long stoppage, even with Robbie getting injured, there’s another lull in the game, and then you have to get your energy back and your excitement back.

“So, yeah, just delighted to get the win. It was a tough match, that’s all I can say really. It was not a polished performance, but it was a gritty one, and there was plenty of positives within it.”

    https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/rugby/2026/05/05/leinster-sweat-on-injuries-after-toulon-as-henshaw-sidelined-for-lions-clash/

Yet even though challenging on two fronts can be tricky, Bleyendaal insisted this has been the province’s ambition from the very beginning of the present campaign.

“That was our attitude from the start. It hasn’t been a straight road there, but we want to give ourselves the best chance to win both. We’ve made the final of Europe, which is great.

“We understand that having home advantage for as long as possible in the URC is a big advantage. That helped us last year, even though we didn’t get past the [Champions Cup] semi-final, but to have the Bulls at home was huge.”

Despite HB performance v Toulon, the attack is starting to improve bit by bit. I think he needs to start again this week v Lions.

Im at a bit of a loss as to what they do about SP. I suppose there is no choice but to have him on bench v Ospreys at least.

I cant see how Leinster can stop BB scoring at least 4 tries. Toulon realistically were knocking Leinster out IF Dréan gets that offload away to Tuicuvu and he scores their 4th try.

Leinster probably will need to score 30+ points in the final to win it. Doris, vdF & Conan all need to start.

Hope they go as full strength where possible over the next 2 weeks in the URC to fine tune everything ahead of the final.

I'm thinking it might be best to put out a second string this weekend v the Lions, and then go pretty much full strength against the Ospreys to tune up for Bilbao. Maybe stronger in the backline than forwards against the Lions so players can get into a rhythm in attack.

What about Soroka and Deeny together in the second row this weekend to audition for the bench role against Bordeaux? It makes me think it would be better in future to keep an NIQ slot up their sleeve to be used for a medical joker if necessary. Imagine if they could have brought in a Brad Thorn-like signing in the second row with Snyman and Baird unavailable. Instead, those slots have been largely wasted on Slimani and Ioane. Ioane was good at the weekend by most accounts, but Jimmy O'Brien and Joshua Kenny are fit and available, and Lowe is nearly back.

Yep thats prob the best thing to do v Lions - Go strong in the backs. Pack must be a bit bushed after that performance.

Would be a great boost if Lowe can start this week.

There's a lot of incentive to go relatively strong on Saturday, given it's effectively a 10 pointer as we're on the same points difference.

Lions have been the prototypical Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde team this year - pretty irresistible at home, where the only team to have beaten them in the URC all season in Johannesburg is the Bulls, who are also accustomed to playing at altitude. They've ran up big scores against Ulster (49 points), Lyon (in Europe - 42 points), Edinburgh (54 points), Dragons (42 points), Glasgow (54 points) etc, and abjectly bad on the road.

They haven't won on the road outside of South Africa, and have lost to some pretty average teams (incl Zebre and Newcastle in Europe). They haven't played outside SA since Jan.

They've shown good form in recent weeks, but all at altitude.

I dunno what sort of side we'll put out, and have to imagine any knocks from the weekend absolutely won't be risked, but think we should have something like:

Jimmy O'Brien, Josh Kenny, Rieko Ioane, Jamie Osborne, James Lowe, Harry Byrne, Luke McGrath, Andrew Porter, Ronan Kelleher, Rabah Slimani, Conor O'Tighearnaigh, Brian Deeny, Alex Soroka, Scott Penny, Max Deegan

Reps: Gus McCarthy, Ed Byrne, Andrew Sparrow, James Culhane, Will Connors, Fintan Gunne, Ciaran Frawley, Charlie Tector

That team should be able to get it done, no?

I'd be starting Frawley, bringing on Byrne, and moving Frawley to 12 or 15 for the final 30 mins.

Frawley simply must be good to go and on that bench in Bilbao.

I would like to see Keenan and Ringrose start again.

Keenan, Ringrose, Jamie Osborne & Harry Byrne have only started 1 game together (Sale) this season.

edit- When have they even started together before that?

My thinking was around bringing those two back in (Keenan & Ringrose) for the Ospreys game, but maybe Keenan in particularly is fairly lightly raced and could feature here.

On the 10 shirt - my thinking is we need to give Harry a chance to rebuild his confidence because it's pretty impossible not to imagine he's our starting 10 in Bilbao. Let Frawley play the last 25-30 mins then, and if it goes okay, start v the Ospreys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,374 ✭✭✭bingobango12

I would be inclined to keep Porter, Ryan, McCarthy and Doris away from action this and next week, bar McCarthy who I would have on the bench Vs Ospreys to keep sharp for 15/20 minutes at the end. There is no real cover for most of them now and all are too important to risk. Porter, Ryan and Doris have no issue coming straight in after 2 weeks off. McCarthy can be slower to get going so would involve him vs Ospreys.

Would go strong outside of the above. Not sure what happens at 10 this week but I don't think we see Prendergast after the Ospreys game (if at all even vs Lions/Ospreys). A big summer for him to try improve a pretty massive hole in his game.

Definitely keep getting the minutes into the backs. It's ALL about building momentum/cohesion to Bilbao.

I'd have no qualms about starting HB each and every week from here on.

Fly in the ointment is those 25-30mins for the back-up.

I cant see Leo abandoning SP as the back-up now. He (wrongly) feels he is capable of performing (defensively) from FB. It nearly cost Leinster the game v Toulon.

He's almost played Frawley at everywhere but 10. It will be a monumental shift in his selection policy if he deviates.

Is Cooney back fit? Would like to see him get some minutes if he is. Culhane would be a good shout to start, if Conan is hurt, we need better impact available from the bench. I don't think Deegan is up to this level unfortunately, and I'd like to see if Culhane can fill that role.

Played and scored in the AIL final 2 weeks ago anyway so would assume he is good to go if chosen.

I watched the Bath semi and honestly it's hard to conclude that Bordeaux are world beaters. Bath made so many mistakes and bad decisions that handed Bordeaux easy entries and scores, Russell was MIA for most of the match, and in fairness to all the whinging about refs and TMOs, they were robbed of penalties and cards on a couple of occasions. Bordeaux's pack are good and they have players like Lucu and BB but Bath really were orddinary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 721 ✭✭✭Madeoface

I'd give Frawley a run at 10 in both urc games for an hour. Then Harry.

But alas, you're probably right about Leo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 892 ✭✭✭darkened_scrum

Thing about Bordeaux is the talent they have in the backline means they can score from anywhere at just about any time. Hell any of Jalibert, Penaud or LBB can do that themselves. Thought their defence was very dogged as well, lot of goalline stands and they controlled the last 20 or so when it mattered.

Having said that, Bath will have a lot of regrets. A few things going differently and they could have won it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,699 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

I thought Bath really fronted up well in the forwards, they were able to make consistent carries across the gainline, and maintain ruck speed. Bordeaux did a lot of work slowing ball, and we're really going to have to be on our toes securing our ball. We can't give them opportunities in broken play to attack a disorganised defensive line. A strategy of keeping the ball tight, using set pieces to wear down their legs, and keep the ball away from them might be a good approach. Our kick chase will have to be on point. I'd be looking to target LBB, to put him on the ground every chance we can get.

We basically have to be on it for 80 minutes which unfortunately has very much not been out forte this season.

But it is a final so anything can happen.
