He went off to England to declare himself bankrupt 14 years ago, during the recession that followed the celtic tiger crash. Living the high life again now I believe while some of the small people who got left high and dry are still suffering.

It is well publicised on the internet that "Westlife singer Shane Filan was declared bankrupt in the UK in June 2012 due to debts of approximately €23 million, largely stemming from the collapse of his Irish property development company, Shafin Developments, alongside his brother."

    And in 2018

Would be interesting if Kielty asked him how many years was he living in luxury in Sligo now since his bankruptcy.

Still, I suppose you have to respect him for dusting himself down and starting again.

If there is a remake of the Slashers movies 'Wrong Turn' or 'Slaughterhouse' Garron is surely a shoe in for a part

So all the talk about Kielty not returning in September looks like a load of hot air generated in media land, it seems his contract negotiations are just delayed because obviously money and the pay of presenters is still a highly sensitive topic in RTE. It could be that RTE want Kielty to do a few more shows per year. His interview with Boy george last night was top notch and riveting viewing, there is no way Tubridy would have been able for that if he could even get him on the LLS, he probably would have fixated on the death of Boy George's mother and try to turn it into another misery slot.

My experience is that people in the media have been overwhelmingly positive about Kielty. I think too positive. He is likeable, but he is not comfortable in the role. His banter is forced, he’s awkward at times and you can sense the insecurity emanating from him when it’s not going well. It’s hard to believe he spent decades as a stand-up comedian. Tommy Tiernan on his programme and Brendan O’Connor when he did the Saturday chat show were markedly more secure in themselves.

Shane Coleman is the first person I’ve heard voice any scepticism, but even then he said he thought that “Kielty’s done a decent job” - hardly an evisceration.

Coleman was mainly referring to a texter’s suggestion of two London-based comedians when he said that. But I don’t think it’s an unreasonable requirement of any future presenter. The whole thing about the Late Late Show is supposed to be that it’s local. How often it’s now happened that the presenter has flown over from London to interview the guest who has flown over from London. And who knows, if Kielty were based here, he might have shown more interest in doing the discussion segments that some of us here have been advocating for.

Might be but it shows that RTÉ really over value their DG and their "talent" and that hasn't really gone away.

It's as if RTÉ have already shown their hand to Keilty in negotiations.

RTÉ: If it where up to us you'd be on 600k, with a side deal with one of our sponsors, but unfortunately we've committed not to paying anyone over the rate of the DG, who's only getting €250K plus extra, can you imagine.

PK: Oh! I am just a poor boy from County Down. I wouldn't know.

Have a good summer all. RTÉ is starting heading off on their annual Bus man holiday.

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

Those characteristics applied more to Tubridy he was unable to handle the big stars but was more comfortable talking to Jane from Blanch about her cancer treatment. With Kielty he is probably a bit more deferential to the irish Z list celebs he has on but is very comfortable interviewing the big stars, he was on solid ground talking to Boy George last night.

I agree that Brendan O Connor was excellent but Tiernan is useless, he has gone down the Tubridy road of fixating on misery and introspection rather than fun and laughter.

Shane Coleman is the first person I’ve heard voice any scepticism, but even then he said he thought that “Kielty’s done a decent job” - hardly an evisceration.

That was more a holding statement from him so as not to appear hostile , then he says the next presenter should be from this country ,thats like saying "The King is dead, Long live the King"

I'd say elements of the Irish media don't like Kielty because he doesn't play the game here. There's nothing in it for them. The whole "he should live here" angle speaks to that.

Also because he didn't come through the Montrose mafia. He made it in England quite quickly.

I think Patrick in many ways is more in touch with people outside Dublin than his predecessors were. Take the Country special, for example - he genuinely appears to enjoy it. Plus his dad used to look after a lot of the older acts when they'd be in his locality. Ryan Tubridy tolerated the special. Patrick also seems to have a genuine appreciation for and knowledge of the GAA, which is more popular outside Dublin. The same can't be said of the others.

Where Kielty lives and commutes from is not. Kielty is the worst presenter of the LLS show ever, and that is saying something. I think the viewing figures would probably confirm that, despite the population of the country having increased massively since Gay's day. Gay did the state some service. Nobody can say that about Kielty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,633 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

The population argument is a red herring. TV audiences arent going up though. They are going down across the board for terrestrial viewing with maybe a brief lockdown bump. If you doubt that, find us the Irish TV shows increasing their audience in a significant way.

Similar story in US and UK, the audience figures for the top programmes are a fraction of what they were in the 1990s.

Kielty did well to hold onto the audience he did in that environment and with the guests RTE sourced.

Kielty easily the best Toy Show host since Gay Byrne also.

He's an Irishman hosting an Irish TV show.

Living in London and commuting doesn't make you less Irish.

Go out to the airport on a Friday evening you'll meet lots of Irish commuters just getting on with their lives.

The UK never had a problem with Irish presenters from the time of Eamonn Andrews and Terry Wogan right up to Graham Norton today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

I could be wrong but I think both Terry and Graham lived in Britain / UK. Eamonn certainly lived in Ireland at least towards the end of his career, used to pass by his former Mansion on the way to School.

You're right Terry and Graham both resident in UK.

That was a separate point about the welcome for Irish presenters in the UK vs. the notion that we would reject an Irishman IE. PK based on where he lives.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

I know, I personally have no problem with PK being from NI or indeed that he lives in the UK.

However I do take issue with how RTÉ have gone about his appointment and the last 3 years of not investing in other Irish presenters regardless of where they live.

Next Week: Murder on the Orient Express (The much repeated Kenneth Branagh Agatha Christie Adaptation by RTÉ, I enjoyed this one but the follow ups have been very poor).

As I have said on the weeks RTÉ has been without TLLS they should have had other Irish content on the air, after all AFAIR after all their mistakes they've been given a bailout and would it be good to have anybody to mention as a successor to the incumbent?

Lottie Ryan has just been announced as the new host of the LLS!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,887 ✭✭✭✭elperello

I'd prefer some Irish content too.

    Enough old movies on Freesat.

Not necessarily a studio chat show.

Maybe some sort of roadshow, a kind of nighttime Nationwide.

Anything really TBH, it could even be a few pilots

The National Euro Song Contest could have aired live from Cork or something.

But we won't get even this from RTÉ, simple put they don't really care.

Laughed at a snarky remark from Pat Kenny in The Indo about Jennifer Zamparelli apparently ruling herself out, "but did anyone ask her?".

The content of Kielty's show is diabolical …… it doubles down on the airhead rubbish that has plagued this show for years …… the best of this show used to be the discussion …. but that is gone almost entirely now …. Gay had the right balance and genuinely made an effort to make the show good ….. Kielty does not …..

That said ….. he is a product of his times ….. a time when airheadism and z list 'celebs' drawn from podcasts and reality TV are aimlessly followed by 1000s ….. Garron Noone and Joanne McNally have to be the worst 2 guests ever from this show ?? …..

End result is this show is not what it once was ….. many say it should have been ended with Gay and perhaps that was correct …. successors like Pat Kenny and Ryan Tubridy had their moments but it got worse and worse each passing year and each true celeb's death ….. and the ever increasing anti-discussion focus ….. Kielty may be the worst presenter ….. but am unsure if it is him or if it is simply the damn era !! …..
