Once again though - you're massaging things a bit in how you present them - i.e. talking about Bealham missing time for international duty but not giving the same benefit to Clarkson / Furlong.

You're not wrong entirely that Aungier moving on definitely creates a gap there, and maybe they'll try to persuade Bishti. It would be quite the coup if they could do so.

Don't need to be convinced on Munster's abject record in this area too - it's genuinely disgraceful. Ronan Foxe - a THP who started an U20 RWC final (and who is 23 now - same as Fiachna Barrett) has played for Munster 6 times cumulatively in his career, 0 starts, for 78 mins. George Hadden - a LHP in the same squad, also 23 now, has never got a minute or a bench appearance even for Munster after 3 full seasons in their Academy.

This is a team (and their fans) who are consistently complaining about their scrum and yet have done nothing to develop two good young prop prospects. Even this year, when they had a bit of a crisis on the THP side, they went out and signed Michael Ala'alatoa as a medical joker, and he's played in virtually every game since then, racking up 15 games, 11 starts and 754 mins (for a guy who signed in November).

That sort of stuff has to be a factor when they approach young players from outside the province to try and convince them to join their Academy.

Well done, hijacking a Connacht thread to have a moan about Munster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

There are zero lies or inaccuracies in anything I wrote up above - but you might also notice if you read it back that I didn't bring up Munster (and their pretty awful track record in this area).

So why don't you go back to sympathising about poor Roger Randle and let this discussion carry on?

Pretty hard to talk about irish tight head props without talking about Munster and the ongoing issues in this position there. Plenty of bad luck has contributed but the outcomes haven't been great since the Bull Hayes and Irish rugby needs better from one of its main investments.

I think there is a super opportunity for a young tight head to go down and break into the starting team.

While I agree I also feel that it has to turn at some point.

How is it wasteful, he can still play very well and if he's a good mentor he's worth his weight in gold.

I'm heading up to Enniskillen to watch the juniors play Ulster. They beat Leinster last weekend and play Munster all the way down in Castleisland next weekend. I think I'll go down there for a couple of days.

A lot of talented lads on this team. I'm a huge fan of Callum Quinn from Ballina. He's a dream to watch. I believe that if he was picked up when he was young he'd be playing for Connacht seniors at 13.

Only one from my own club playing. He's a New Zealander called Xavier Tavai. He's an absolute beast, the amount of time he spends in tne gym is insane. A super consistent second row for us, he played there last week but he's been moved to 6 this week and I'm interested to see how he gets on there. He moved over here two years ago and loved it. He went home and struggled to get a visa to come back and only got back here in January. I've a feeling he'll stay here forever if he gets the opportunity.

I could go on talking about the players but I'll leave it at that.

I'm looking forward to it. The one thing I will say is that the standard of junior rugby in Connacht has improved massively over the last five or so years.

Was pondering last night about utility players ( and I know pondering can be hazardous to the health) but it struck me that the two current best utility backs for Ireland are Osborne and West. And Osborne hasn't exactly been fantastic so I do wonder if Harry West will get a deserved call up this year

Osborne is just coming off a Six Nations where he started every game at fullback, scored 4 trys and looked comfortable switching between 15 and centre in game. Where exactly are you getting you nonsense from?

Seems like it was an entertaining game. Was Bryan Walsh a standout?

I remember thinking Quinn was very impressive back when Ballina were in the AIL.

Should Ulster win the Challenge Cup, and as such qualify for the Champions Cup does it mean URC teams 1-9 qualify for Champions Cup on the basis Ulster finish within the T8

Bryan was fantastic along with Sean O'Connell, Fintan Crawley and my own clubman Xavier.

The pack played very well, we lost it on the outside.

We got the ball down for a try five minutes from the end but the referee didn't see it. Myself and an Enniskillen man both seen it. I'm not blaming the ref, the ball was moving right and suddenly went left so he was caught on the wrong side. I thought the linesman should have caught it.

Their backs were stronger and faster than ours.

I spoke with the Enniskillen strength and conditioning coach, three of the backs were from there. He's going to send me the regime they use.

Enniskillen is a great club, I've nothing but the height of respect for them. They beat us in the the AIL qualifiers and won the final to get there. I spoke to the club president, head coach and S&C man today along with plenty of their members. All gentlemen.

Probably a good thing I suppose. We would have to be grateful to Ulster and I'm not sure I could cope with that.

Hard enough to put up with comments like 'poetic license' these days. Having my poetry of Connacht rugby critiqued these days. What's next?

I know that the people coming this thread, it seems almost indifferent to women's rugby,. But Ireland U21 women team accomplished historical victory against England yesterday. In this team, there were seven Connacht women (ELLa Burns, Roisin Maher=ex Creggs, Ailish Quinn, Jemima Adams Verling, Emily Foley (above all starters) and Poppy Garvey and Siofra Hession (both off the bench). Maher, Adams Verling and Quinn were try-scorers. They were all impressive at the match. I dream that Connacht men's players may realize to Ireland squads as same as these female members. Anyway Congratulations for all and fight one more match(v Wales) at this momentum please.

Apparently Jerry Cahir is going to Connacht next season. Leinster offered him a 1 year deal and Connacht offered 2 years and got it done.

Really good signing IMO - he’s been brilliant for Leinster this season and hasn’t let us down once in several huge games. I’d be happier if he was staying, for me he’s a better player than Peter Dooley (rumoured to be going the other way).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,663 ✭✭✭FACECUTTR

That is good news for Connacht if true. Dooley is decent but it has not really worked out for him with injuries etc. I'd imagine Bohan will be first choice with Van Wyck as no 2. Chair will definitely get gametime.

I wonder where Jordan Duggan fits in. He played the first 9 games of the season, signed a new two year contract, but has pretty much disappeared since the turn of the year.

Shame for Leinster after taking the chance on him, but I don't think there's space in the depth chart for him in the medium term, as evidenced by the 1 year offer.

I wonder is this the final signing that Billy Millard eluded to.

Still no word on SHL signing a contract? Lancaster said he wants him and if he stays I'd say we have the best back row in the country.

Denis will be leaving at the end of the season. His statement says he's still exploring opportunities so I guess he's not retiring just yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,997 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I think he'll either play AIL or retire, he's got a young child and I don't think he'd want to venture too far from home.

Maybe he might come back to us in Creggs, he's said before that he'd like to spend his last year playing with us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

I don't think he could go straight from professional to junior rugby.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭lavrenti

A great servant Denis and I wish him all the very best for the future.

The Jerry Cahir signing is a good bit of business too and probably means that Lasisi and Dooley are on the way too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

We should keep Lasisi as a tighthead if Aungier leaves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 864 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

Fair play Denis, great career in green and best of luck.

Hope it's on his own terms

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,806 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

I have not been easy on Denis lately. But when all is said and done Denis was impossible to get rid of when he jackalled. He was like a dog with a bone. And yes it was unfair that he never got capped at international leve

The child being young enough to not be of school going age is the perfect time to go abroad for a season.
