Yeah that's true. The ticket price is only one element of the cost, but the match is only one element of the day out. The rest is the craic with the people you go with and that costs money. I'm not blaming leinster or anyone else. I'm answering the question about why it's harder to sell tickets.

got ticket in north end for 33 that’s decent value for a semi.
however I’m over the aviva it’s been 2 long seasons of it.
the match a couple of years ago against LAR that sold out was I think under leinsters pricing and they nailed it. We got family tickets for 59 euro I think. 4 of us brought our 4 sons front row of the south upper for 30 quid adult and child.

Yeah, I can't afford the toast in a resturant. I'm buying the ingredients in a supermarket and making it at home. That's what I've been saying.

Will a few lean years make me better able to afford the toast? I doubt it. But I might make me more inclined to splash out on toast as a one-off.

There seems to be anger or looking for blame around people not buying tickets. There's no need for anger or blame.

If people are choosing to hold on to their money for other things because money has become tighter recently, isn't that fair enough?

Other fans aren't obliged to buy tickets to show their support or to improve the atmosphere.

Yeah that's fair enough. If I was in Dublin I'd be going, but honestly I think the continued failures and the fairly abysmal experience of watching Leinster these days is a larger factor. But that might just be me pushing towards my priors.

Yep, that's literally the point I'm trying to make. In hindsight, the sourdough reference might not have been the clearest path to that but I totally agree with you.

It is what it is. There's a myriad of reasons behind it and trying to link it to ticket prices or even the defensive philosophy of Jacques Nienaber is a stretch. Aviva fatigue is a big one for me; I am going tomorrow but I am totally over the Aviva and can't wait for the RDS to reopen.

"fairly abysmal experience of watching Leinster these days".

I've wondered if it's just me getting old, or what the reason is but I agree with that sentiment.

I'm hopeful moving back to the RDS will help but I would be lying to say I enjoy going to Leinster matches these days. I wonder have Leinster (and Irish rugby) have lost their identity.

The new stadium announcer grates, the Mike McCarthy pre match "Leinster clap" and now the mid match call/response thing that they do in South Africa. Then the Irish rugby and their Sweet Caroline nonsense.

I would have never claimed Leinster's atmosphere was ever amazing, but at least it wasn't attempted manufactured cringe.

Excactly. Looks like the PR Dept are on here again this morning. Lecturing and to drum up ticket sales.

I wonder will Leo be lecturing us today about turning up and not to get ahead of ourselves?

“Again, going back to the semi-final we’ve already lost, like, people were looking ahead. Everyone’s looking ahead. Everyone is, supporters, staff were trying to look too far ahead. So it was a real harsh lesson for us, but (it’s about) making sure we learn from that. So be excited now.”

You hit a nerve there! Some people cant fathom why you dont spend your money. I really only went to the URC SF v Glasgow because the kids wanted to go. Same for QF Sale game. They didnt ask to go to this game.

I will be going to the game. By myself though and I've already decided Im not going to the Lions game next week or the Ospreys game the week after that.

Over the next 6 weekends Leinster will be potentially playing 5 games at Lansdowne Rd.

I'll be selectively picking and choosing.

Or maybe I need a few lean years to reset😂

Its only in Leinster ( aka D4 ) that an analogy using avocado toast would be common parlance …..

There are many many reasons as to why it’s not a sell out and for sure different people identify with their own thoughts on it ….cost……ennui…dislike of coaching (Nienaber especially) style…. unlikeable nature of Aviva…..Bank Holiday …..over exposure of Rugby ( seems endless following on from The Lions Tour) …… arrival of Summer , etc

It’s not a very difficult choice . Go or don’t go , watch it or don’t watch it …..there is more to life.

You would presume a home European Cup semi final against a club like Toulon with massive pedigree would be a guaranteed sell out. I think a lot of people are just bored of the perpetual failures to be honest. They know that ultimately, Leinster aren't winning the competition, so why bother paying for a ticket. It probably highlights the casual bandwagon nature of a lot of fans. But I think that's where it's at. They're losing the casuals. If Ireland fail again at next years World Cup, we may see something similar there.

Cost is definitely an issue for this game.

I think 33 quid for a basic ticket is great value tbh, especially when you look at UK ticket prices for games usually.

But for anyone outside of Dublin, it's 33 plus travel, plus food and drinks at a minimum. That's after a couple of non-ST games where the costs were the same, and right after ST renewal. Over the course of March-now, rugby costs have been higher than normal, so cumulatively, cost can be an issue.

Personally, I haven't missed a game because of it, but I absolutely hate the Aviva and have not enjoyed the last two seasons there, so I can also understand people not buying tickets because they're also sick of it.

I wouldnt say "perpetual failures". Its the failure to deliver performances with the talent available.

Its really the underperformances that has frustrated most supporters.

I agree with "Not winning" is definitely a factor for the "bandwagon nature of a lot of fans".

    Like that team

    Bench is callow though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,988 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

    Good team*. Pity no Lowe.

    *JOB can count himself unlucky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 585 ✭✭✭pjdarcy

Not the strongest bench in the world. Frawley unlucky to miss out. I hope the weather holds as our scrum has been less than stellar this season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,374 ✭✭✭bingobango12

    Happy with that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,457 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Same, best we could have hoped for really. Clarkson deserves to start now all big games for us going forward on merit, and I've more faith in Slimani than Furlong to scrummage in the last 20-30 mins.

They're a dangerous team with plenty of quality, but if we show up and we're switched on then we should be good enough to win by 8-10 IMO.

    Buzzing for this one now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,087 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

that’s the XV I would have picked and Porter’s return is huge, provided he’s actually fit. The bench isn’t stocked with forwards but given the injuries and Deegan suspension it is what it is.

Great to see Prendergast back in the 23. I think Osborne is fortunate and both JOB and Frawley can be disappointed to lose out to him.

Harsh on JOB, Osborne has done nothing to warrant a spot in the 23. Glad to see Prendergast in the 22 ahead of Frawley, well deserved. Would have liked Soroka to start, so we could attack Toulon's lineout, let Conan come on for impact.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,327 ✭✭✭TRC10

Where are people at with Osborne currently? He filled in ok at 15, but the general consensus is he doesn’t have the pace to be elite in that position. And yet his performances in the centre have been pretty poor. Tector has shown a lot more promise at 12 this season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,699 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

He's been a massive disappointment so far. I was excited to see him finally get a run there, and he just hasn't delivered anything. He doesn't have a burst of acceleration to make breaks, his strengths are passing and line running, and that hasn't come to the fore. I think Tector and Cooney have shown more than him so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,376 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Osborne had a great Six Nations playing fullback. Looked a test standard player for sure. Not been as good since coming back in at 12, which you could potentially put down to him being shoved around different positions. Still doesn't excuse some of the individual mistakes he's making.

He's far better player than either Cooney or Tector, let's be real here. I'd continue with him at centre above anyone else tbh. Just needs to find form again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,687 ✭✭✭P.Walnuts

He's played twice ( maybe 3?) at 12 after playing 15 ( to a very good standard) for about 2 seasons. Let's give the chap some time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,138 ✭✭✭arsebiscuits1

Osborne has 4 appearances at 12 so far this season. The first of which only came after the 6 nations.

I think it's fair to say he needs to bed into it and I'm sure he will.

With Osborne the expectations are naturally high. He's a regular international and European level player.

With Tector the expectations are naturally lower. Anything performance above average (which he has consistently delivered in fairness) is par the course as he doesn't have the same body of work

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,070 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

I agree with the sentiment but now isn't the time to cross your fingers and hope he finds form soon.

It's unfortunate because he was very good at full back (not ok as mentioned above) and probably better than expected. Everyone presumed he would be just as good at centre so it made sense to get him starting at 12. But he hasn't found form in the centre.

It would be a big jump to drop Tector in the centre so they've taken a safer option with Henshaw. Presumably Henshaw can't play a full 80 so They need a centre on the bench so Jimmy and Frawley miss out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,457 ✭✭✭FtD v2

He's played there 4 times since the 6 Nations; ironically his first perfomance, against the Scarlets, was probably his best game at 12, I thought he was decent in that game. The three subsequent performances have been poor.

I'm happy Henshaw got the deserved call to start this weekend, but wouldn't be writing off Osborne at all. He's still just 24 years old; people sometimes forget that because of just how experienced he is. There's plenty of scope for him to keep improving.

I think there will be in and around 40k there which would be comparable to last season where the attendance was 42k.
