It's a home semi against 3 times winners Toulon, whom we've never beaten. I wouldn't imagine its knock out fatigue or the competition that's affecting the ticket sales. I think the reality of it is that the casuals have slipped away at this stage.

In times past the Aviva has always been a sell out for big knock outs and xmas games with a good mix of serious and more casual fans filling it. Unfortunately we've had two full seasons there now and the novelty of a big day out there his dissipated for many.

Of course, there's dart services, bank holidays and various other factors but for my money we can't get back to the the RDS quick enough, hopefully big days out in the Aviva will appeal again

We're also pretty kak to watch this season. I'm sure that's a reason for plenty of sun shine fans not to go.

Yep and it’s culture is not aligned with SA rugby

Sorry but this punter did not welcome Nienaber.

An obvious stooge type for Rassie.

The Aviva has not always been a sell out for big knockout games. We didn’t sell out the NH semi final last year. The 82k the previous year was a massive outlier.

Anything north of 35k would be pretty much in line with historical sales. Toulon aren’t a big draw.

SSales look dire lately for rugby fixtures. If you can't sell out a home champions cup semi final, something's gone wrong big time!! Munster suffering too in Thomond

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,880 ✭✭✭leakyboots

Are attendances not up in Thomond over the last 5 years...? That was my understanding anyway.

Edit: I mean it's not selling out beyond the glamour fixtures obviously but there's a healthy core support of 12-15k no matter the fixture.

Leinster's attendances do seem to be on the slide but maybe someone has actual figures to argue otherwise. Huge population base on the doorstep...

Avg 17.8K for URC games this season, there are 2 home games to go but can't see either pushing up the avg, down on the avg of 20K from last season but there was probably an Aviva novelty factor there. The season before the in the RDS the avg was 15.2K. These don't include the home Munster games. So overall we're a bit up on the home URC games.

I'm really looking forward to going back to the RDS.. The Aviva once in a while is a novelty but the RDS feels like a better atmosphere...

Multiple reasons why Aviva isn't selling out.

    Cost

The last few years have shown that EPRC are out of touch. The idea that Q/F and S/F games should justify a premium price is stupid. From a fan/customer perspective it's the same experience as a good URC game.

Also, people are feeling the squeeze. Cost of living has gone up for us all. I'm certainly more conscious about spending money on tickets this year than I was previously.

When you look at last year, Leinster had 3 CC knock out games, 3 URC knock out games, all at home, plus the URC final. For a family of four, with the cheapest tickets, you're looking at nearly €1000 of you were to attend those games. People can only afford so much.

    Performance

Reality is, that watching Leinster currently is not as pleasant experience as it was. Under Lancaster, I couldn't get enough of watching them live. Unfortunately, we lost some big games (finals) by narrow enough margins but my god were we a joy to watch. Playing some outstanding rugby.

You definitely think twice about it at the moment.

    Jordie Barrett

It was a privilege watching JB play last year. I'm sure a large part of signing him was to help put bums on seats at a time os the season when provinces are shorn of internationals and to help pay for renting the Aviva while RDS was being done. There was a game v Glasgow I think in Champions Cup. Myself and my son were at it but JB was sensational that night. We went a few times afterwards just watch him. I'm sure some others would've done the same.

    Fatigue

See above re knock out games.

The ticket prices are absolutely crazy. They do this every season. 85 euro to sit in a standard seat in the lower stand - jog on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,374 ✭✭✭bingobango12

It’s a semi final in the pinnacle European competition. €85 is not an unreasonable amount for that in my opinion.

35-40k is good going. Not many clubs can draw that amount of supporters, it just looks a bit lost in the Aviva. The bank holiday doesn’t help things. Of the 50 or so in my office, over half are going down the country or abroad today for the long weekend. No doubt this is replicated across the province and affecting sales.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 689 ✭✭✭user060916

Ignoring the fact that I think, €85 is a lot for a semi final in the Champions Cup.

You need to take into account we've already been paying for the round of 16, quarter final and likely one or two URC knockout games. The money quickly adds up.

I know it's apples and oranges but the semi final is more expensive than NZ v IRE in Eden Park which will be a far better experience

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,071 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

I've lost track of what is or isn't good value for tickets. I've given up on going to sports, cultural events and resturants since things became more expensive after covid. Just can't afford to do it all anymore. I've no idea if many other people are in a similar position.

I feel it doesn't bode well for businesses that are relying on the higher prices. An economic shock could really damage business like leinster and the Champions Cup itself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,087 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

You can buy an adult ticket for tomorrow for 33 euro. For a European semi-final, this is very good value.

Cost is not putting anyone off.

Maybe we should all just cheer up a bit.

Cost is not putting anyone off.

Glad you've peered into everyone's bank account to make this determination, cheers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 689 ✭✭✭user060916

Cost is putting people off. I know a good few who aren't going and cost is definitely a contributing factor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,087 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

and cost is definitely a contributing factor.

It depends what we're talking about. If it's the cumulative cost of going to all the games, possibly with kids, to the R16, QF and SF, then fair enough, it does add up. What the solution to that is, I don't know.

But 33 quid is not an expensive ticket, it's about as low as a major sporting event is ever going to be in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 920 ✭✭✭HanShotFirst

Yeah @user060916 @darkened_scrumc @El_Duderino 09 Why don’t you just do as he says? Cheer up everybody!!

Isn’t it great to see your province being smelted down for Krugerrand?

Even the 2 "BIG" semi finals versus Toulouse in 2022 and 2023, were something like 42k. which is pretty good, but not a sell out.

But I do think the atmosphere with Leinster stinks this year, I find they put me in bad form a lot of the time. I'm almost dreading if they win, because then I will want to go to Bilbao, and I wouldnt rate their chances against Bordeaux at all.

But its not just 33 euro for the match, its a day out. It's travel, food, maybe a few beers. It's more like 100 euro including everything. It's not just my money, it's my family's money. You could pack sandwiches in a bag and go straight home after the match, but what's the point in going if it's not part of a day out? You can watch the match at home with a beer for a fiver and have the rest of your day with the family.

I don't know how many other people are choosing to use their money for other things, I'm just saying I'm certainly doing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 893 ✭✭✭darkened_scrum

And it's the third one in 4 weeks or whatever it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,549 ✭✭✭clsmooth

Knock outs in the Aviva used to feel like a big day out. Now it feels like just another day at the office due to playing there every few weeks although it’s obviously not. The return to the RDS can’t come soon enough. You can’t beat a smaller venue and feeling closer to the team and action.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,087 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

I made that exact point four posts above. I also said I don't know what the solution is. Dropping ticket prices can't really impact it.

The only alternative I can see is not making the knockouts, or having to play away matches. I don't think either of those are better.

I'd say the other 75% of the provinces would love to be having this conversation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,071 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

I don't suggest anyone does anything about it. I'm just telling you why I (and presumably some other people) aren't going to games anymore. I didn't suggest it's Leinster's fault, or anyone else's fault.

Aren't people always being told their financial problems are caused by eating avocado toast? Sport and cultural events are my avocado toast and I've cut them out. They can't complain that people eat too much avocado toast and also give out that avocado sales have dropped.

I only speak for myself. If I had plenty of 100 euros in my account at the end of the month, I'd go to some of these games. But I don't, so I don't.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 33,945 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

That's as well be, but ultimately the ticket price is not the problem in that scenario. And there are plenty of people complaining about the ticket price.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,437 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

there is that but a lot of this is leinster and their fans being victims of yere own success. the RDS redevelopment and playing everything in the aviva hasnt helped of course with an aviva fatigue being a factor IMO but leinster year in year out get a clear home run with the playoffs. it doesnt create a real buzz a lot of the time for home playoffs as youre always there. in comparison to a lot of teams where home playoffs are a real big deal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,594 ✭✭✭OldRio

Well obviously if you can go 'abroad for the bank holiday weekend or go down the country' 85euro isn't a great amount. Other people might think differently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,087 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

Fair enough, but plenty of people are giving out about ticket prices.

To torture the analogy, you can cut the cost of the avocado by a few cent but if the price of sourdough toast, matcha latte and staff costs stay the same, you still can't afford the toast.

Maybe we do need a few genuinely lean years to reset ourselves.

This is the biggest issue. €33 for a ticket iss not bad value. But a family of 4 it's €100 before travel and anything else. But at the knock out stages of both competitions it's too many €100s. It's just too frequent.
