A friend of mine was in Thurles recently and was very impressed.

Liked the vibe of the town a lot, nice pubs, new market area, student population, a decent rail connection between Dublin and Cork. Also a stadium that brings in spenders on big match days.

I know several Tipperary Towns that would cry out for that, never mind towns in the rest of the country.

Thurles has a very good selection of cafes and coffee shops unlike other towns in Tipperary. I was walking around Nenagh looking for just a coffee shop, not a chain shop but something like Deja Brew or One19 in Thurles but none to be found. All you've to do is go look at how busy all the coffee shops in Thurles town are and more are opening and more are getting bigger (Halo), they wouldn't be doing it unless the footfall and the people around were spending money.

Nenagh has them too you have the Steeples up by the courthouse (vegetarian) and then up eats near the drivers licence off.

Thurles has potential it can develop as an education hub. Mary I has massive potential for expansion. Needs purpose built student accommodation in the town

Steeples is more a cafe than a standalone coffee shop that's specialise in coffee. Just eat similar, I've eaten in both places and the food is always top notch but not just not that in and out takeaway coffee spot which so many other towns have that I was looking for. Surprised Nenagh doesn't have any, or any of the local places in Thurles or Cashel haven't went up north.

Lot of the ex hurlers have coffee shops now, the likes of Cadell, Barrett, and Seamie Callanan, no idea if they're any good though.

The days of getting big industry to towns like thurles is long gone.

Thurles needs to focus on developing as an education center. Mary I is growing and there will be more courses added over the next few years.

For the town to benefit fully though it needs purpose built accommodation. The munster hotel should be student accommodation. Couldnt be better located. All the business in the town that would benefit from shops to cafes to physios, recover rooms etc, mid week business for barbers hairdressers, hotels for college events. During the crash there was an article about the downturn and it's impact on rural towns. Templemore featured and a physio practice had noticed a significant drop in apt while the garda college was closed
