The petulance and absolute patheticness of the ideas being floated in the discussion as to how the US can "punish" what it views as recalcitrant NATO allies who have refused to row in beind the Iran war.
Dropping its support for the UK's claim to the Falklands.
Suspending Spain from NATO (Is this even possible?

The notion that after giving Argentina an F16 import license, that the US will now also roll back support for the UK's possession and sovereignty over the Falklands is a serious affront to what has been for the last 100yrs the US's greatest ally and the one whom AUKUS hinges on?
Would in times of diplomatic normality be an absurdity.
    In current times though?
Another nail in the coffin of trust in the US and its hegemony.

    That this thinking was floated?
    Let alone publicised?
Is an indication of just how rapidly the adults have been excluded from the decision making.

    🤣🤣

The upset over Las Malvinas among the cohorts in Britain who once upon a time shilled for Trump is glorious.

Maybe we could get the Pentagon to shoehorn in Gibraltar and the 6 Counties at the same time. 😁

To be fair, pretty much any comment/report/think tank randomness about the Falklands gets a rage from Brits, to the point that its actually quite sad, still funny though.

I wonder how long before SF and the rest of our Tankie opposition is screaming about this?

I can't see a P8 being in NI full time, just because of their numbers and the required security issues, but a sign of the times.

I think its just a PR puff piece. The UKCG have a Fixed wing based in Preswick just for that reason anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,390 ✭✭✭sparky42

oh the working with the RNLI/Coastguard is puff, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a P8 becomes a regular visitor, somebody has to do the job.

    Deluded.

The instant I read the story about the taoiseach wanting to double the defence budget but the civil servants in the DOF & DPER saying " No, we wont be doing that"…I knew whatever plans (that cost actual money) that might happen were dead.

    Tánaiste.

Micheál Martin will be avoiding any association with defence like the plague.

Now it’s public… Yes, The Cav is in the US’s armor contest.

They were offered a spot for an M1 team also, but apparently the powers that are decided they were just going to test the waters on this run. They have been in the US for the last three weeks getting a crash course on operation of the vehicle.

How long would it take normally to get fully operational for a crew on the Bradley?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 17,909 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

As far as “good enough for the test” is concerned, I’d say two weeks. I ran through a NET fielding in ten days, which covered everything from first principles through driving license and a gunnery qualification.

It’s certainly not enough for full fielding, but we assume a lot of on the job learning.

Event#1 complete. Physical fitness. The Irish absolutely demolished the rest of the field.

Call for Fire and Doctrinal Knowledge are next.

Folks, this isn't a news article, rather it's a US bill that allows for the return of 3 F14s to flying status.
With typical American reserve and understatement, it's called the MAVERICK act 🤦

    https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/4161/text/is

Now where the "news" comes into this IMO?
An earlier US law mandated the destruction of all F14 specific spares to prevent their falling into Iranian hands.
AMARC also shredded the majority of airframes in storage.

The return of a Tomcat, any Tomcat to flight status given the destruction of the type specific parts and indeed, much of the possible donor airframe supply, won't be easy but I look forward to seeing it happen.

I have been told that daily ranking updates shall not be posted. Apparently the teams at the bottom end tend to give up. However, were they to be published, i would expect the top slot to be being fought by either the Irish team or the National Guard team from Dixie Thunder who have also done well throughout the day.

Trouble lies ahead on the gunnery, though. Apparently there are issues adapting to a CIV and getting used to a large modern range with pip-up targetry. Apparently the Irish range has fixed targets. Shows the merit of doing this foreign contest in a modern vehicle, even if it's not one Ireland will ever use.

You can see the strategy in holding the rankings alright, but good to know the team is remaining competitive, but at the same time issues were always going to pop up for them. Fair dues to them.

Total side note. The British M1 crew is being led by a Dub.

Next year they will have to hire a Bradley for 6 months before the 27 event and get you to train them up!

It is difficult to tell all this point where the teams lie. Irish did very well in call for fire, pretty well at Vehicle ID, and no idea on the doctrine test. Pistol qual was OK, as was crew evacuation, and the sprint drag carry was up their lane, but the falling plate pistol shoot was middling. The junior trooper nailed the Texas Star, the LT did OK on his line of plates, the gunner didn't have the best of days. A couple of the US teams obviously had folks who shoot pistol on their own time, but the Poles were the surprise pistol marksmen.

Today wasn't a contest day, it was a day for zeroing and proof firing the vehicles.

The crew are referring to their Brad as a car.. old habits

In fairness, the team are extremely happy with their instructors and can't say enough good things about them. My knowledge is nearly superfluous, though I have made one or two suggestions for their consideration.

Have you had any chance to chat with any others on their views on the teams performance so far?

Well done to the lads for such a performance.

On a personal note, love to see the 1st Armored leading the Abrams rankings. They were still based around Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Hanau when I worked at USAG Hanau as a contractor, and I used to see “Old Ironsides” badges every day at work, to the point where my colleagues and I adopted the 1st Armored as “our” guys…

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

They continue to give a good account of themselves. They got a bit upset with their gunnery performance, but Benning is arguably the most difficult tank range in the US Army system, so most teams are feeling that way. Current scoring information from The Powers that Are is still not flowing freely.
