Well this pic demonstrates what my cat thought of it. Even Patrick seemed disinterested in some of the guests, especially the cook lady. He's defo lost the enthusiasm he had in the beginning, and I'll be surprised if he's back in September, but who knows - maybe they'll announce before next week's last show that he's renewing his contract.

I do always wonder what street it is you're getting your girls-next-door on, because it's not the same street as I'm getting my girls-next-door on

Also they don’t have to leave Europe after 90 days or face a possible sanction.

    Pretty good show all round.

Some interesting chat and a bit of music.

Just the job for a Friday night in.

Fair play to Kielty, did a good job tonight with a mixed bunch of guests. Does a decent job on the radio on BBC Five Live too.

Whats the odds on Kielty announcing he's leaving the gig next week? If so will they "rest" the Late Late?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,310 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Not the worst show tonight in fairness.

You dont have to win Oscars to be considered a successful actor.

He's been working regularly for twenty years, mostly tv, and having a laugh all along the way while the millions roll in.

I must say I prefer the light stuff for a Friday night. We have enough misery and suffering all week as well as whatever strife we have in our own lives, to deserve a bit of respite and some levity at the weekends

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

Apparently when Ryan Tubridy left the Late Late he didn't announce until the days between the penultimate show and the finale. CoPilot AI says at the moment it's looking like 60/40 in favour of Patrick Kielty leaving, from all publicly available information. So we'll see this week I suppose, or on Friday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,310 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Tubridy probably announced in that period in the hope he would be given free stuff on his final show though.

There's no reason that if PK is actually leaving it won't be announced until later in the summer when somebody else is lined up for it.

Wasn't there supposed to be a Moya Brennan tribute this weekend or is it next weekend?

Why would anyone want to leave such a soft gig. I enjoy his shows and hope he renews.

Yes, same. The only other person I can think of that I would like to see doing it, if Patrick did leave, is Miriam O'Callaghan, but she already refused it in 2023 I believe. I can't think of anyone else. After Patrick saying how much it meant to him when he first took over, I would have thought he'd be in it for the long haul, but I suppose RTE developments (allegedly deciding to outsource production of the show in the future) and personal life events must have overtaken him if indeed he is leaving. We'll see this week anyway.

There'll probably be clues in the show. If he doesn't say words to the effect of "see you in September" it'll be a good indicator. I'd like to think they wouldn't leave it hanging until September before they announce something, even though it's not exactly a matter of life and death. Be nice though if he had a bit of a special "farewell" show if he isn't coming back.

No, this came up a long time ago. RTE are terrified that TV3 or Virgin ir what ever it is called will launch their own show called The Late Late Show.

No resting the format. They are scared another Irish broadcaster will use the title.

But the format is dead. They just cannot get the guests.

Maybe just offer the job to Dermot Bannon and be done with it. He's been on so often at this stage he'd be able to present the damn show himself.

It is terrible to think the only presenter is already over the age of retirement. You think that RTÉ would have in someway invested time into the consideration that if PK is to leave to provide current or new presenters with opertunities to present other shows in the meantime.

It is part of their New Direction to outsource some of their programming both Fair City and TLLS were suggested as neither News or Sports programming will be outsourced. Though if RTÉ staff choose to take industrial action that might change RTÉ's mind on that. Meanwhile RTÉ have already outsourced some inhouse documentaries and religious programming.

It will be interesting to see if we know if he will be back, by leaving it to his last episode it gives the show a boost either way.

I wonder why RTE staff are so determined to keep them in house ? Are they afraid that an outside broadcaster might not have them on as guests as often or they would not be in contention as much for the presenter job. Also they would have less control of the content with an outside broadcaster. Currently they probably have alot of indirect influence on the show because they probably socialise with the production staff.

TBH it doesn't really help anyone, its pretty much RTÉ moving FC and TLLS to meet their commissioning requirements.

By moving them out of RTÉ RTÉ are meeting their statutory requirements due to public funding increases, and due to pressure from Government since the scandal and the details of the bailout.

Current Independent productions come to ~40m, by giving FC and TLLS to an independent producer they increase this by at least 20m per year, pushing that to ~60m, but really from an audience point of view nothing has changed.

RTÉ is still producing what it produces and at the same time increases their funding of independent productions.

On the other hand if they don't move them out RTÉ would have to increase independent productions by 20m without the aid of either production, while having to retain them. As pointed out RTÉ aren't going to cancel either show.

Presumably if the Late Late is going to be independently produced, then it wouldn't be filmed in the RTE Montrose Studio 4 any longer?I think that would reduce it's "value" even further. When you're in Studio 4 (as an audience member) you really get a sense of the history, that Gaybo presented the show from there (well, from 1995 anyway - before that it was Studio 1) etc. There is something about being on the Montrose lot and in the studios. It just wouldn't have the same feel elsewhere. I suppose people would get used to it but I think for a lot of people it would feel like the beginning of the end of the show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

It would be a bit of a waste of infrastructure if RTÉ moved either TLLS and FC out of Montrose, according to RTÉ at the Oirechatas committee it would be a hybrid-co-pro between RTÉ and an indo producer and this would be due to the use of "RTÉ Studios", RTÉ have also suggested that FC might need to move due to building noise from the land the sold, when building gets going, but I don't this is a real concern TBH. FC would be a bigger move.

There is a whole issue surrounding RTÉ maintance of their land, I have walked around and it needs at the very least a good clean.

Well TLLS returns in the autumn, but it is expected PK will return in September.
