Where we've had the edge on Ulster (and all the Irish provinces in games that matter) in recent times has been the tight 5, and I feel we don't have that this week.

I agree completely on Culhane - and had the same thoughts earlier. He looked a really exciting prospect at U20s, and while he's shown some good snippets at senior level, we still haven't really seen the same explosive player (some of that has been injuries).

This is as good a time as any to produce a performance.

Same for Alex Soroka - he generates a lot of hype from Leinster fans, and part of that is his personality etc, but this is the fourth domestic derby he's been trusted to start this year, and for me, he hasn't delivered a performance yet in any of them.

the spread moved from -1 to -5 after the team announcements.

as a team which have particularly underperformed against expectation for most of this season, i expect that to continue tomorrow. Ulster by about 10.

    • Cahir v Bell
    • Kelleher v Stewart
    • Clarkson v TOT
    • Deeny v Izzy
    • Ryan v Henderson
    • Soroka v McCann - Probably the closest battle to my eyes
    • Penny v Reffell
    • Culhane v Augustus
    • McGrath v Doak
    • Prendergast v Murphy - to be honest this wouldn't be a conversation only Sams form has been so poor lately.
    • JOB v Ward
    • Henshaw v McCloskey
    • Ringrose v Hume
    • Keenan v Stockdale
    • McCarthy v McCormick
    • Byrne v Crean
    • Slimani v Wilson - Draw. Slimani and much superior scrummager. Wilson a better all arounder
    • COT v Sheridan
    • Deegan v Ward - Ward more explosive and in form but Deegan a much better all arounder and l/o option
    • Connors v na
    • Gunne v McKee
    • Frawley v Flannery
    • na v Postlethwaite - Leinster have better cover in the backline tbh. Ulster have a lot of single position players

McCann is well ahead of Soroka imo.

It isn't just about personnel, it's about playing as a unit. This Leinster team has very little time together and some of them have barely featured at all this season, and we have not been good at hitting the ground running this year.

    Handy enough win for Ulster.

I'm heading to this tomorrow, first time in Ravenhill and would love a win. Would really give a boost to the squad but think Ulster may just win this one by a score. Hopefully I am proved wrong.

Ulster are definitely more cohesive as a team and Leinster have suffered from being a bit (understandably from disruption) disjointed which has been a feature of the season. But I do feel there’s enough experience, talent and will to win this. Haven’t been to Ravenhill but it’s no different in hostility to Thomond which Leinster are well up for. Unusual for Leinster going to Ulster as the underdog which may help raise the bar on performance

Canan Moodie also signs up with Toulon for next year.

That is such a shocking Leinster team. It reminds me of Leo Cullen year on year hoping for miracles. To be honest Begles is handily going to win the Champions cup. Leo needs to focus. He keeps doing this braindead stuff. So start with the URC Leo

I know there is concern that leinster is resting too many players between Champions Cup games again. But there isn't much scope to rest looseheads. Cahir and Byrne might end up covering LH all the way to the semi final unless Porter can get back to give one of them a break next week.

Ideally they would give some or most of the team a rest this week and give them game time next week.

It's not the end of the world but it's a concern.

It's almost like they'e decided a home quarter-final is good enough and that a home semi-final is just out of reach points wise.

That post looks like something that could have appeared on Truth Social at 4am. "LEO IS A REALLY BAD GUY".

On the selection itself, apart from the back row, it's a pretty strong team. In the back row, we have injuries to VDF, Baird and Doris so needs must, and we have to rotate people in and out, especially the internationals.

This is the fourth of potentially 13 straight matches for us. It's not reasonable to expect full-strength line-ups 13 weeks in a row.

It's a not remotely dissimilar Leinster selection to the team that beat Connacht home & away earlier in the season:

    • home, Leinster 52-Connacht 17 (Ciaran Frawley, Tommy O'Brien, Hugh Cooney, Charlie Tector, Joshua Kenny, Sam Prendergast, Jamison Gibson Park, Jack Boyle, Dan Sheehan, Tom Clarkson, Joe McCarthy, Brian Deeny, Diarmuid Mangan, Will Connors, Jack Conan. Reps: Gus McCarthy, Jerry Cahir, Andrew Porter, Conor O'Tighearnaigh, Max Deegan, Josh van der Flier, Luke McGrath, Andrew Osborne
    • away, Connacht 23 - Leinster 34 (Ciaran Frawley, Joshua Kenny, Garry Ringrose, Charlie Tector, James Lowe, Harry Byrne, Fintan Gunne, Jack Boyle, Gus McCarthy, Niall Smyth, RG Snyman, James Ryan, Alex Soroka, Will Connors, Caelan Doris. Reps: Ronan Kelleher, Jerry Cahir, Andrew Sparrow, Brian Deeny, Diarmuid Mangan, Scott Penny, Luke McGrath, Ruben Moloney

Bringing up the fact that Leinster beat Connacht, first on the Connacht thread and now on this one isn't the win you think it is 😅 The fact that Leinster are better than Connacht doesn't stop Connacht fans having an opinion on Leinster, most Connacht fans want Leinster to do well

No one on here knows what minor knocks or niggles those not selected have. There is more than likely a very good reason that this is the team. It reflects our current squad strength. We can't win every game and Europe is and always has been our priority. We got very little credit for winning the URC last season, it's as though it's a given. People need to get real, it is easier said than done.

This is a great point, take backrow for example. Doris has concussive symptoms after Edinburgh game, JVDF and Baird both went off injured last week. That's our entire starting Back Row carrying knocks into this week.

Joe McCarthy was fairly beat up in the sale game too.

That's 4 of our starting pack who may have needed a week off after back to back 6 day turnarounds.

I don't mean for wider Connacht fans to be collateral damage in that, but having someone come on here weirdly and randomly to try and **** on Leinster does bring a need to refresh their memory a bit IMO.

As others have said - it's definitely not Leinster's strongest selection, but the notion that Leinster can just roll with their strongest side week in week out is fanciful as well, especially when you consider the amount of high intensity games these players have played internationally this season too.

I do think this selection is quite comparable to the two selections against Connacht (or against Munster in Thomond). Whether it'll be good enough to get the job done tonight in Ravenhill remains to be seen; I'm not optimistic myself.

The realities of the situation are what they are, and it remains to be seen what happens next week, but whether forced or not I feel like we frequently end up with players and combinations not playing consistently at this time of year and it has a way of undermining consistency.

I would be much happier if as close to the full team played in at least one of these URC games. It may the case that that is simply not possible, but the coaching ticket have a history of doing that deliberately.

T'is a fair point regarding niggles etc. The Leinster injury updates are a running joke for supporters.

I wouldnt be rushing out to put laurels on Leo and JN for winning the URC though. As soon as Leinster get knocked out in Europe they SHOULD be winning their 'domestic' league. URC develops into a ridiculous competition in the PO with the SA travel.

Potentially 9 more games left in the season for Leinster.

I think as a general rule of thumb IRFU try to 'manage' the Irish players at roughly <25 games or approx <1,800mins.

    https://www.world.rugby/news/1017767/world-rugby-executive-board-agrees-new-player-load-guidelines

Doris is up to 21 games already, Sheehan 17, JGP 18, TOB 18 etc - so fair enough.

In general, it is a pity though that the inter-pros games (particularly at the top end of the table) arent given more weight than - Benetton (a), Lions (h), Ospreys (h).

I agree FtD v2. At the same time I find Leinster a conundrum. Yes Leinster is the major supplier to Irish rugby. And as such Leinster rugby should have very decent set of fall back players. So really my point was that the fall back players selected for tonights game have never been as as weak as this selection. Maybe that's a worry in itself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,344 ✭✭✭✭Heroditas

What you said was there was a "sense of entitlement".

So what exactly is your point? Stop backtracking. You're actually not making any sense whatsoever. Again

The goal isn't to make sense.

The goal is to spread discourse. It's not a new concept to them

Looking at stormers matches and they have a rtough run-in. They have connacht, Glasgow at home and Cardiff Ulster away. Leinster could well steal second in the table. They have Ulster (and need to hold on in the last 10 mins), and Benetton away and Lions and Ospreys at home.
