    ohh

Is this a thing, I’d never heard this before

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,941 ✭✭✭emaherx

It is, but I don't think we're missing out on much at such small scale, it would probably cost more to get them certified for trading.

Plus the tax implication then v the 400 allowed on domestic resale

You an still claim FIT its small.money now, however we do not know what the future brings. The carbon credits may be used on farm.

And potentially more if there are other adults living there and contributing to the bill.

All must be listed on the bill and people seem to have hit and miss success with getting a third person added depending on company and possibly whoever they get speaking too.

Correct, I forgot both names must be on tbe account

not Diesel per say as per thread title but looking toward energy independence.

    further developments
worked out a sort of barter deal for batteries so my first 10kw is in the garage waiting to be installed, plan to get another 10kw before summer is out. Either Bartered or bought.

This will let us load shift the majority of our power requirements into the cheap rate power. And export all our solar for payment.

A mini split air to air unit would let me use this cheap electric for heating, given current oil prices that would be 1/4 the price per Kw heat. I think I’ll try a DIY unit (€700) in our main living area with a goal to replace maybe half our kerosene usage next winter.

If I could fit another 2kw solar direct south facing I might get to cost neutral on electricity while using it to 50% replace my kerosene use. Currently use ~700l per year

Maybe a mod should split out the solar stuff at this stage, it is related but also a discussion all by itself.

Pinergy may be worth looking at with your plan, they have the highest feed in rate and lowest night rate but highest day rate. I was looking at the option for myself but think my storage may be a little low for the winter offset. You'd get paid 25c for export and pay 6c night rate with current prices. You could even buy and sell grid power if you've surplus storage in summer months.

Also be aware of your max import and export you may need to upgrade MIC and NC6 for the extra capacity.

I don’t think I’d exceed the max export 5kw for long at any stage.
my current system is split 40% east, 60% west.
if I add the 2kw south I may see some clipping but I couldn’t imagine it will be a problem

Well, you won't exceed it unless you upgrade the inverter anyway. I'd be more concerned about the MIC if you've a lot of batteries to charge in a short low cost time window along with heating loads especially if you were to throw in an EV or 2 to charge.

JJust Changed the title if that's OK h2f2

Do grand, I guess that covers it as well as anyhing.

    sorry I don’t understand MIC ?

20kw battery should pretty much take in its 80% over a 3 hour window.

Maximum Import Capacity, standard house is only 12KVA but a 16KVA could be required for a house with heat pumps or a lot of battery storage.

my 10Kw battery can charge at about 6KW it will certainly charge in a 3 hour window.
If you have 2 seperate units with their own chargers you could be hitting 12kw, or even if it is just one charger for the 20KW add in an EV or anytype of heating devices used in the same 3 hour window could be an issue. (you can limit the charge rate, but that will limit how much you could charge in a small window.)

You may already be on a 16KVA connection depending on what was requested on the original hookup, ESB recommend it even for a welder.

Other means of storing electricity, gravity, ice and heat.i see our new washing machine has WiFi. How far away from full integration with power generation are we

I did a rough calculation on a sand battery.

Would take 80 tonnes of sand to hold enough energy to heat my house year round. Specialised foundations, insulations and pipes to distribut/recover heat so they don’t collapse when very hot.

my tiny hydro will take a back seat while I set up these batteries, solar and mini split heat first.

Ah the few days the silage pit would be cleared and the tennis court prepared for Wimbledonesque matches.

Fell in to an army of nettles on the edge of the pit one summer. Ran in home bawling. Loads of sudocream applied .

Dish washer and tumble dryer here have WiFi, I haven't looked too hard at them, but probably could use Home Assistant to schedule them according to solar forecast. Have already been doing it with the immersion and thermal solar panels.

Having said that, it has proven useful for hot water controls, it's probably not as much benefit with the other appliances. New tumble dryer only draws 500W in eco mode, and dish washer not much more. The eco modes suit solar as a long low draw run, rather than quick high draw loads. The old washing machine however is nearly as bad as the immersion drawing close to 2KW when heating.

Can you still get dishwashers and washing machines that use hot and cold water, you would think they would be more eco friendly than just a cold water inlet

They could be in some instances, but it takes a lot more energy to heat a big tank of water than the small amount a machine actually needs. I think a good modern machine with high energy rating will beat a machine with hot/cold inlet when you include all energy needed for the wash. It's also a pain in the ass if the washing machine uses the last of the hot water just when you wanted a shower.

If you've enough free hotwater dual inlet might win, we had one with solar thermal panels when we moved in and it was fine for a while, then the twins came along and there was more demand for hot water between extra machine washes and kids baths and the single cold inlet made more sense.

When i was shopping for same i was told you can buy ones with hot & cold supply.

The issue with the hot supply is that it has to be temp regulated as in if your supply is 60 degree & you want a 40 degree wash then you it takes energy & water supply to reduce the temp down.

Dont know how true that us plus they were more expensive anyway.

TIme the washing machine here to suit the solar for most of the year.

Put in a 6.5kw system with 5kw battery last year & can't fault it...pretty much off grid from April to mid Sept last year

If you are handy a mini split is a great option. Cheap as chips. If you get a modern r290 one (propane) anyone can install No F Gas Regs.. A 1kw one will give out 3.5kw. Hardware can be bought for about 500 euro. The refrigeration guys looking for about 3k-5k to supply and install. Easily installed in a couple of hours. Beats the complication and faff with a2w.

Just curious how do ppl paint sheds when they have solar panels on them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,619 ✭✭✭have2flushtwice

Whay are lads paying for a 3 bay haybarn paint job.

    FFront Back and sides....

I've a road compressor here, if I buy a lance and hoses I'd be a long way towards the cost.

Paint cost will be there anyway.

If I got 1 job off a neighbour I'd be breaking even.

You might not get a call back as soon as the paint may have stayed put and not flaked

There was that shiny corrugated sheeting around 30 years ago and nothing could keep paint on it. I painted it 3 times and it always came off.

A traveller called a couple of years ago, with the usual talk, how he did a job for this fella and that fella, and i wasn't going to do it but I got a quote of 2k to do all the old sheds on the farm.

He had a Romanian doing all the work, he gave it a mighty washing and sure enough, the paint has stayed on. It must be a better paint. (Or better painter)
