There's a line of buses down the whole north quays so I'd say it's just for the protest. And I'd say there's a lot more stops it's not serving given that nothing is moving there at all!

RTÉ News has reported that the fuel protest in Dublin City Centre is blocking buses & Luas trams on O'Connell Bridge tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,756 ✭✭✭✭stephenjmcd

No surprise. Multiple buses got stuck in the city centre unable to move or be turned around for a long period. Some were turned at Dawson Street and went back to Donnybrook for driver changes.

Its a mess with the protest

At least it's for a good reason unlike Sunday.

Try over 2 hours with no bus with 5 services in a row no show through Celbridge towards town this morning. No taxi to be got either. Had to take an unpaid day off. No disruption at all for motorists on M4 and M50 locally this morning, but public transport severely affected. I hear on the radio now they're deliberately moving blockades to stop buses that had been diverted around in the city. In general I support that this government should be doing more, but this protest at this stage is going about things entirely the wrong way.

Here's Go Ahead Ireland's updates about the service disruption due to the protests.

    https://www.goaheadireland.ie/service-updates

The W4 from Tallaght is terminating at Liffey Valley until further notice.

The 73 has diversions in place due to the disruption from the protest as well.

Their DCOM routes are terminating at Heuston Station.

The 125 did not serve UCD Belfield today either due to the protest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,880 ✭✭✭mikeybhoy

This is a major problem created by these riddiculous cross city routes. Pre 2011 the vast majority of DB routes ran only to the cc and did not cross the city so not too disruptive in the event of a protest.

But now you get the crazy situation where the E2s southside routing is gone and the E1s northside is gone for example. Partly because the NTA wanted it that way but at least if DB used some common sense the E1 duties could be split between Harristown and Donnybrook and the E2 duties likewise then you could maintain a better level of service in the event of disruption like protests or during events like the Marathon/Patrick's Day.

I'm not sure things would be much different if they all still terminated in town. They still wouldn't be able to access the centre of the city (where the termini would likely be).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,087 ✭✭✭thomasj

Wood Quay was a mess tonight with the usual routes (4, 37/39/a/70, 69 etc) c spine , g spine and the green coach services all stopping there.

Add to that , that some buses were parked on that side due to being no space on the other side . Space was tight with people walking on the road to get on buses and buses stuck behind due to green coach services (2 at one point) picking up passengers for ages.

You also had the case of a guy there waiting for 23/24 despite the notice that they had reverted to the old routing.

Could have helped to have better information on the rtpi signs.

That's how I think as well - while there are arguments to be had for or against having all these cross-town services, that's not gonna affect much when city centre is blocked off. Even if we didn't have as many cross-town services as we do, situations like the past two days would've been a complete mess regardless, with buses having alternative termini and/or ridiculous diversions.

Even during events like the Dublin marathon or St Patrick's Day buses get similarly insane routings because of all the road closures, the only difference here being that it's due to a protest during the weekdays.

I'm curios with the likes of the 16 taking such a big detour, will they stop to drop off and pick up passengers at other (non 16) stops on High Street, etc. ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,880 ✭✭✭mikeybhoy

Yes but at least then the disruption could be confinded to one side of the route only.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,880 ✭✭✭mikeybhoy

Common sense would say yes. I mean anytime I've ever been on a bus that was on diversion the driver has let anyone that wanted to get off wherever it was safe to do so as for picking up that might be a different story.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,902 ✭✭✭john boye

Driver on a 77A this morning told pax that bottom of Cork St would be the last stop until Ringsend as it was going off route.

Updated again now with Blanch buses going as for as Blackhall, c spine going to Heuston , e spine Northside as far as parnell square/Southside kildare street amongst others

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,878 ✭✭✭OscarMIlde

At least with the C spine going to Heuston, people can get the red line to city centre and get a train if they need to go futher North/South and vice versa. I was avoiding the C spine (I get it from Heuston) the last three days in favour of getting a Luas to Connolly and then home via the train. Much longer but at least I knew were I stood, I didn't trust the buses not to have cancellations/massive delays.

Apparently the plan for today is for DBK to operate the southern half of both E1 and E2 while HST do so to the north. I'd imagine Central Control are putting in quite a lot more work this week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,833 ✭✭✭p_haugh

Seen someone mention that on the Tapatalk forums yeah. Jamestown Road is also helping out HST on the Northside for the E spine.

Interesting that the E spine is still split, but the F spine looks to be running the full route, but with diversions via CHQ and Gardiner Street, when they both usually share the same route from Stephen's Green until Parnell Square.

The C4 has been more reliable than at any time in recent memory since they moved to the Heuston terminus. Obviously, it's a massive pain for anyone trying to get into the city centre, but it's remarkable the improvement on the rest of the route! Fewer cancellations, less "time-shifting," less skipping Celbridge altogether for Maynooth departures, fewer ghost buses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,878 ✭✭✭OscarMIlde

I really think they need to implement a few buses that begin in the city centre as well as the ones coming from Ringsend or UCD on the C spine, particularly at rush hour. There are C3s and C4s full of people going to Palmerstown and Lucan unable to pick up people going to Celbridge, Leixlip and Maynooth further down the route as they pick up a lot of people who can take multiple buses upstream. Beginning routes nearer the city centre gives people a better chance of getting a bus if commuting from Aston Quay or Heuston. Before busconnects I used to always get a 66X that left Westmoreland street and knew I would be able to get on. Now it's a gamble every day whether I will get on a bus or not, and if I do they are jammed to dangerous levels.

It must be difficult atm trying to arrange driver changes etc when the changeover stop isn't accessible and the route has been diverted a good bit away from it.

In the DCC Traffic Department – Quarter One Report 2026 (Available in the Resources tab of an upcoming Council Meeting and Directly Here ), on p5 in the "Bus Connects - Network Redesign & Bus Stops" section it mentions that the Phase 8 D-spine is scheduled this year, is this lack of communication/optimistic reporting, or could there have been a change in the staff situation in the operating companies? I'd love to see a question made about this in the meeting.

There won't be any phases implemented in 2026 - there is no funding allocated to it in Budget 2026, nor are there the staff and vehicles to do it (the slow pace of depot electrification is causing major issues in that regard).

It will be 2027 before any further phases happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,833 ✭✭✭p_haugh

By the sounds of it, Donnybrook is to get it's chargers installed over the summer. The 13 is due to transfer to Phibsboro and some buses will leave along with it to make space. The substation has already been installed (the prefab at least, anyways), so it should just be a case of installing the chargers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,645 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

As I’ve explained before, there are two aspects to getting the electrified depots up and running.

Installing the charging equipment is one aspect but the second is the ability of the national grid to supply the necessary power to the depot.

My understanding is that the latter won’t be in place until well into next year.

The ESB do appear to be looking to increase supply to depots to allow more buses to be charged simultaneously.
