Examiner said its 14 games since an U20 Hurling win... is that correct?

Im trying to remember the last time we won a game. Ken McGrath was there 2 years and didn’t win any game under him so that’s 8. I don’t remember 2023 I think it was first year of the round robin and fairly sure we didn’t win a game either. did we lose a knockout game v Tipp in 2022 in Dungarvan with a late goal? that would have been Mikey Kiely and co. You’d have to go back to covid times I think!

Weren’t we in an under 20 Munster final in the 2020 covid year

Can remember a game under lights in Dungarvan a few days after the senior all Ireland final

Some very questionable decisions by the ref in the first half.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 250 ✭✭Pudz2180

doing okay, not sure how strong wind is? Tipp full forward line look dangerous. Ref is a bit of a gobshite

down 0-11 to 0-10 at half time. Similar to Clare game. Well in it. I’d fear Tipp have another gear though

Waterford forwards are sharp enough, if only they could get their hands on the ball. That's a fairly strong Tipp team on paper.

Going to piss this away, 5 wides so far in second half and a missed penalty while a man up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 111 ✭✭5948ai

Game gone scrappy. We'll rue missed penalty and wides.

Last week was bad but that felt even worse, yet another game thrown away. Should have been out of sight after that third quarter, didn’t make the dominance count in the scoreboard

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 250 ✭✭Pudz2180

ffs. We are actually cursed at under 20

Hard to know what to say on that. Incredibly disappointing not to win again. Really should have 4 points on the board.

Only saw the second half hate using the words woeful and depressing . The shooting and decision making was shocking , Tipperary were no great shakes but that’s not our problem . It’s like we’ve seen these performances for decades at all levels too often .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 111 ✭✭5948ai

That was soul destroying. At least the ref gave us a free to level it after a very harsh free against our corner back for over carrying when Tipp lads were hanging off him. Another depressing result to add to the catalogue at this level.

We robbed that one. Didn't deserve it.

Very hard watch. 1 man inside the 45 for Tipp for most of a second half playing with the wind.

it’s bizzarre I’d say we’ve hit more wides than points over the first 2 games. As someone said we really should have 4 points on the board and now we’re gone after just 2 games. As much as we dominated proceedings for long stages you could see the confidence sapping out of us and it’s like no one even wanted to shoot towards the end.

There’s a Bigger picture here lads it’s all about building for next year now. We had the AI minor champs from 2 and 3 years ago beaten all ends up in all but the scoreboard so we are there or thereabouts we just need to trust joxer and his management team to keep fine tuning these lads and give them time. 12 lads on the field tonight still have 2 more years in the grade

only saw last 20 mins. Game was there to be won….but ‘blue’ it for second week in a row…😢…missed a penalty and then a dying seconds free to level it up…….😡😡

Agreed, very competitive for a very young team. It's not their fault the Countys record is so bad at this grade, and they could very well have been two from two. Hard luck to them.

Inability to score at any level of hurling is an Epidemic of Waterford hurling last few years. Seniors have been the lowest scorers of the strongest counties since 2021. Our game plan at every level now seems to be make the game a scrap and keep it tight and hopefully sneak a result. U20/U21s results since then is feeding in to why we can't get out of Munster at senior level, only once in our last 13 games have we scored more than 1 goal. 2016 team scored 15 goals in 4 games, we've scored 23 in our next 22 matches. Since 2016, P22 W1, D1 L20!!!!

Some pressure being put on last years Minor team to salvage Waterford hurling for the next 10 years like the 2013 team did.

AI champs 2 years ago. Clare won it 3 years ago.

But on paper it is a very good Tipp side albeit the brand of hurling is very turgid stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,757 ✭✭✭Mastermcgrath

that’s what I meant. Against the ai minor winners from 2 and 3 years ago we went toe to toe and should have gotten over the line on both games. I see a lot of flack for Tipp management online but I think tonight Waterford forced them into retreating as they were so dominant in middle third and Tipp had to bring men back in order to compete and to be fair it worked out in the end Tipp managed to get over the line.

Only saw the last 15 minutes, and am as one eyed as the next man, but that was a fair free in against the corner back, he took a heap of steps. Very disappointing to miss that free at the end to level it, seemed fairly central albeit against a fair wind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 250 ✭✭Pudz2180

obviously the results of the first two games have been very disappointing but to look at the positive it’s a very young team (at least ten of last year minors have been blooded) and have more than held their own against two of the favourites for the all Ireland. Off the top of my head we still have Spain, Keane, Conor power and Murphy ( who is minor again this year) to come in aswell. the experience of this year will hopefully stand to this group and hopefully we will be challenging for honours the next two years

Also sean Mackey going off at half time tonight was a huge loss. Him playing the second half probably would have swung the game our way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,012 ✭✭✭robbiezero

We have seen it time and again with this management team unfortunately. 1 against three in the full forward line is standard fare.

There is a lot of disquiet in Tipp about how the u20s play, but I guess they are AI champions and are 2 for 2 so far, but Id be surprised if they dont get exposed by better teams.

As I mentioned above it was the first 10-15mins of the second half that did the damage. Four wides in that ten minute period, from what I recall at least three of them very scorable, well inside the Tipp half and the other an unsuccessful long range effort. Defence was excellent coming out with every ball and then the missed penalty was another huge blow. Followed up then with yet another wide and not really pressing home the advantage of having the spare man for a while.

It was the type of game that a 4 or 5 point lead would have been enough as it was tit-for-tat up to then. Just numb from disappointment at this stage.

Lads I get the doom and gloom over the result last night but wouldnt you rather be where we are now with something very real to to build on, over where we’ve been at this grade over the past number of years? stuck in no man’s land miles off the pace.
For what it’s worth we’re still very much in it, we have cork at home next in 2 weeks time and Limerick away the following week. With 2nd and 3d place qualifying for a semi final there’s plenty left to play for

While I agree that we should be optimistic that we are building something that bodes well for the immediate future in this grade, it is the circumstances we lost the first two games that makes me uneasy. Against Clare and even more so last night we were, in my opinion, way the better team but did not have the nuance or bite in us to put them away. If we were weak in a number of positions or out muscled it would be one thing, but it is the complacency and nonchalant decision making that is hard to fathom and it may be this mindset that will prove more difficult to rectify.
