Rumours doing the rounds on Leinsterfans linking John McKee with a move to Scarlets this summer.

I understand why it's probably the right time for him to leave Leinster. He's firmly behind Sheehan and Kelleher obviously, is behind Gus McCarthy in the international reckoning, and has two high potential explosive athletes coming behind him in Stephen Smyth and Lee Fitzpatrick.

But, for the life of me, I cannot understand why he isn't more highly rated elsewhere in Irish rugby.

Connacht - who supposedly made an offer to Stephen Smyth which was declined - are going into next season with four senior hookers contracted - Dave Heffernan (who is 35 now), Dylan Tierney Martin, Eoin de Buitlear & Matthew Victory - and I'd have McKee over any of them at this point.

Ulster -where McKee is from - have a clear first choice in Tom Stewart, then a 36-year-old Rob Herring, a journeyman in John Andrew and James McCormick. I'd think McKee goes in as clear second choice on that depth chart.

I'd rate him at broadly the same level as Diarmuid Barron or Lee Barron too fwiw.

Wales online reporting scarlets after McKee as Marnus VDM off to Munster and Ryan Elias is the only senior hooker now.

Yeah, I get why he'd be seen as a good signing for Scarlets, just baffles me why the likes of Ulster, Connacht or Munster don't rate him more highly.

Think RG is getting unfairly sh*t on tbh.

He is not. For the calibre of player he is supposed to be and the pay he is almost certainly on, his performances are just unacceptable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,674 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Yeah, this is it. People defending him by arguing he's basically fulfilled the role performed by Brian Deeny this year (and arguably no more effectively than Deeny) is a weak argument IMO.

I'd go back to the challenge I posted yesterday - can anyone cite some specific examples of games where, in a really tough dogfight of a game, he made a big difference with a big physical impact?

I'm struggling. Maybe Dragons away earlier this year, but I think it's fair to say that's not the sort of game we signed him to make a difference in.

Nope - came off the bench after 46 mins for Deeny. Scored the BP try on 77 mins to take the game away from them.

His best spell of performances for us was probably October 2024. He started 4 games on the bounce, v Benetton, v Munster, v Connacht and v Lions. He scored tries against Munster and Connacht (and made others v Connacht with his offloading). He played 246 mins that month (from a possible 320).

He was good in a big win over Bath at home in Europe (47-21 in Jan '25), scoring two tries off the bench again. The game was arguably still in the balance when he was introduced.

But I struggle to find too many other examples. He was pretty good on the run in last season, but only as part of a wider team performance.

It's very odd. I thought he'd be a no-brainer signing for us (Connacht) - he played the best rugby of his career under Lancaster in 22/23, including significant minutes in knockout games.

Would be an immediate upgrade on 3 of our 4 hookers and is a good enough player to be first choice post-Heffernan, imo.

But he isn't being played in the role that I presume they want to play him in. I do agree with you both that his performances have not been good this season. No argument from me on that. But it must be recognised also that he isn't suited, for whatever reason, to starting games. And due to a Lions Tour, Ireland duty, injuries he has had to start most games this season.

I feel it would be very different if he was fit for the run in and coming on to replace a second row with 50/60 minutes gone. That is where he adds value, against tired teams and defences. If that is worth his salary is another story, but one for him and the Leinster Branch.

To answer your question FtD, I can't give you a game this season where he made a big difference, there potentially isn't one. But he makes a big difference on what the run in looks like for Leinster without him being available to pull from the bench in my opinion.

That is a pity. He is too good to be 4th choice at Leinster but madness another province aren't looking at him. He would start for both Munster and Connacht and bench for Ulster. A real pity if he has to go to Scarlets to get a contract.

This isn't a defence though. There's no logical reason why a guy should be able to come off the bench in the RWC final and not be able to perform from the start against the Scarlets. He's either not very good or very lazy, or both. I honestly don't see a third explanation.

In terms of value for money and in terms of expectations vs performance, he is right up there with our worst NIQ signings and I'm pretty disgusted he has another year to run.

    An April Fools Joke?

Any idea whats wrong with Ringrose? HIA?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,227 ✭✭✭bingobango12

I agree with your first point. It makes no sense and I don’t understand it but that just seems to be the case. He is likely in the lazy category, is never really involved in rucks, or tackles. Is just a body in the line most of the time. I still feel he will be missed in the knockout stages this season with what he can bring to an attack when on form.

A nice option to have off the bench (Wud have been!). Particularly for depth of squad.

    At least Baird is back.

Need Ryan, JoeMc and Baird for all the big games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,674 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Ringrose looked pretty badly hobbled on the sidelines last week, and is in the under assessment section, so I'm expecting him to miss out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,796 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

Ok. What happened to him? I just saw him with the cut on the head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 oso92

He went off but subsequently passed a HIA.

He's been operating on one leg since the Italy game. Something clearly not 100%, so I suspect they could be letting him rehab that.

I think we will miss him but that doesn’t preclude him from having been a terrible signing and we would be much better off had the money gone to a multitude of other possible players instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,796 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

It must be the leg so. He did great to battle through the 6N. Amazed he lasted as long as he did v England.

I know he gets flak but he's one of those players you only realise how important they are when they arent playing.

The level of commitment he shows week in week out for Leinster and Ireland is amazing.

Rarely less than a 7 out 10 performance and never lacking maximum effort.

1 or 2 (1 in particular!) should learn from his example.

We'd have been better served keeping Moloney. Watching Synman jogging around the pitch while Northampton cut through our defensive line was the last straw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,591 ✭✭✭ersatz

yeah, he got hurt PLAYING FOR LEINSTER. Maybe just dock Leo’s wages for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,794 ✭✭✭50HX

Yes but that makes him therefore v v niche.

There comes a time where you need to roll up your sleeves, stick it up the jumper & make the hard yards

He has 2 RWC medals in his arse pocket for god sake.

He deserves the criticism as its fair imo.

He has & is continuing to steal a living in ire.

I was amazed Leinster signed him when he left us.

He belongs in somewhere in Toulouse where you can wheel him out from knockout stages on & wouldnt be greatly missed if he wasnt there either.

The biggest error Leinster made was letting Molony go/try to keep him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,591 ✭✭✭ersatz

Yeah, Snyman had 2 seasons with the Bulls before he was capped and never started for SA (bar 3 or 4 tests, mostly against minnows). His actual club record with the Bulls isn't extraordinary but Rassie saw exactly what his value as a sub was, largely unrelated to his value as a starter. Both Munster and Leinster had stars in their eyes signing him and clearly didn't look far beyond those medals.

Anybody any idea on tickets sold for Sunday?

Still looks like quite a lot available on the corners and at either end, but a lot shifted since I looked on Monday where every single section bar some premium had a good chunk of seats available on the map.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,177 ✭✭✭✭Heroditas

I think I read somewhere that they're expecting ~20,000 on Sunday. Think it was the Irish Times and the article also said that if we had the RDS available, we would have probably played the match there and 20,000 would have been a good attendance in that instance!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,674 ✭✭✭FtD v2

It's an awful time for a game, and a team that, even given it's a knockout, it's very hard to muster much enthusiasm for.

It's been a while since we had a European knockout game that was quite as uninspiring as Edinburgh. I think 20k would be a very good crowd.
