I thought Shane Power was unsure in decision making / taking too much out of it, especially in the first half. Looked much more comfortable when moved into full forward and offered a different threat to Walsh there.
Hartley is rumoured to have had glandular fever in recent weeks. He certainly didn’t look fully fit last night.
Mackey was excellent, as was Lynch. I thought Carey might have been introduced to hit frees when we were struggling with them in the second half. Quann impressed me at midfield. I thought the half back line of O’Sullivan, McDonnell and Penkert did quite well too. Was Keane injured or was that tactical? I thought our tackling was excellent. Felt the ref did well not to buy frees (from both sides) throughout the game too.
We’ll need to get an impact from the bench going forward to be getting out of the group. Hopefully Tobin and maybe Power can provide more options.

Should alternate the U20 hurling Wed/Thur nights. Would be nice to watch the other game. Ah well, suppose we'll have the extra hour in the evenings next week.

thats a very good waterford team especially the full back line and the two lads in midfield , when you see the size of quane and he u17 last year , hes some man to win a ruck ball or any sort of dirty ball , spelman will be really good too his deliveries are good normally but he was a bit hit and miss on wednesday a really good hurler though

the two corner backs were very good and cathal o'sullivan looks really good too, when you think about it we had 7 of the all ireland winning team of 2023 playing last wednesday ye had 7 of last years minor team and quanes brother came on late and there was only a puck of a ball in it , the development to this minor team is well on target , O'shea is a really good lad too but was kept fairly quiet , was sean mackey minor last year i dont remember him , and ye have young spain to come back too

Pierce and Hugo Quann aren’t brothers. Mackey is in his final year at U20 this year. How is there so few of the Clare 2023 minor winning team on the U20 team this year?

Poor day out for the U20 Footballers... beaten 1-12 to 0-06 by an excellent Clare side... still all to play for v Tipp next Friday with the winner progressing to the next phase... Tipp no doubt will be hot favourites but this U20 team hopefully have a big performance in them.

a few of them are injured one or two came in off the bench , one or two that started for us are in on club form too , 7 of the team started in the munster u20 final against tipperary last year too

The footballers will always have tough days even when things are improving. progress this year at u20 level would be winning a game or even 2. I’d say the same for the hurlers. Getting to a level where we are at least competitive is a good base.

Could easily say the same about the hurling.

Since 2016’s under 21 hurling All-Ireland win (10 years ago), Waterford under 21/20 footballers have won more matches in the Munster championship than their hurling counterparts.

Not exactly as daunting playing, Limerick, Clare, Tipp or even Cork at football though is it?

It’s a fair point though that underage hurling was a wasteland between the U21s in 2016 and last years minors. Hopefully the men in charge now can put a better shine on it.

Is anyone feeling this break until the Ennis match a long drag already. And still another 3 weeks to go.

There's a lot to said for qualifying for a league final….even if its Div 1B.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,757 ✭✭✭Mastermcgrath

True and only for the unfortunate bereavement that the Tipp game was pushed out an extra week it would have been even longer. But that’s just how it is, we would have known a couple weeks prior that we weren’t going to be in a league final anyway, and the lads have had the warm weather training camp and I beleive are in a very heavy block of training at the moment which will take them up to the weekend before the Clare game.
then you have Some key senior players carrying injuries, like Bennett, Jamie, Prunty and Aussie aswell that need time to get right.

After how the league played out, I think the break will do more good than harm, a chance to reset, assess & go again. Hopefully the trip abroad & volume of training will see them develop a game plan that why can implement for the Munster championship successfully. Also, given the injury list, another match rather than in-house matches may have been more of a hindrance.

Fantastic win in Clare. Another example of a well coached and hard working underage team. Well done to all involved.

First away win in Munster at minor football since 2001. Well done to all involved

that’s a shocking statistic it’s taken 1/4 of a century to get an away win……recall a 2002 Munster win in u20’s but can’t recall ever a ‘big ball’ final at minor level….😢 maybe this could be the year….there is absolutely no reason why any waterford football team can’t be at least competitive….!

a certain amount of "see it,be it " is lacking , it's easy enough to find heroes in waterford hurling ,even if we didnt always win we were classy and flashy , and you got something out of every game, all you get form football is misery, misery misery the whole flipping way

On that minor team - I take it Ryan Molumphy is the son of Stephen? Is Luke Fitzgerald of Passage any relation to Mark?

Who in general would be the stand out players on that team to keep an eye on? I know Adam Cummins of Lismore is handy.

I don't know about Ryan Molumphy, but there was 2 or 3 Molumphy's on that Ballyduff team that won the county in 2007 so I'm sure he is a son of one of them.

Yes Luke is Mark's brother, I think he is even taller than Mark!

A lot of the players there are still eligible for next year, including 5 of the Ballygunner players, the 2 lads from Passage and Jack Walsh (Mount Sion) and Cian Delaney (Butlerstown) who are both very talented.

This year's Minor team will hopefully hold there own but I'd fancy next years team to seriously challenge for honours.
