It's listed as not available to NBI customers on One Big Switch's website but they seemed to still offer it to Sponsorgate below -

They have just gone fibre at my address so I'm moving to Sky or VF!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 359 ✭✭Sponsorgate

Yes, signed up. 500mb for 30pm. NBI customer. No increase.

That 5 Gig broadband Switcher deal from Eir looks tempting the €100 credit is applied upfront. Your first year effectively costs €41.66/month, while your second year will cost the full €49.99/month..plus the inflationary 2 -4 euros

Unless you have a wired system that can handle 5 Gig speed (unlikely) and a house full of WiFi 7 compatible devices (even more unlikely) I really don't see the point.

Funnily enough can get 10 gig with my Wifi 7 Asus router but my wired pc can only handle 2.5 gig though and yes not that I would be ever using it but sure 1 gig is costing around 40 so 5 gig for not much more is pretty good except for Eirs woeful customer service.

I think the constant complaints about Eir has made them up their game in the customer care department and they're a lot better now. In fairness their service is so reliable you rarely need to use them. I found out today that Pure don't provide phone support on the weekends, they do answer emails promptly though which is very good.

just got an email from Sky saying they are charging me 273 euros early termination charge. This is after switching to Pure after the price increase and a letter from Sky saying I could cancel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,447 ✭✭✭NotShero

Someone found out it was only going to affect the out of contract price for them and it was still going to remain the same price with discounts while in-contract. I presume your email said it was going up in-contract. The easiest way to check was to look at your predicted bills on MySky.

The fact you got the email should be enough to fight it, submit a complaint to Sky first and you can get ComReg involved after 10 days if still not sorted.

I still have the letter saying I could cancel. I also have the time and date I called them and was denied the cancellation. I’ll contact them alright, the money won’t be taken until May bill after checking MySky app

Sky did indeed want the router back, sent out a box to return it in, quite easy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,630 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Got an email from the Pure retention team offering it for €35 for 12 months, why couldn't they just do that when I rang a few weeks ago? I declined saying I went to VM on the switcher deal. VM went down yesterday evening which wasn't great, a reboot of the modem got it back instantly. I still have a week left of the cooling off period if it acts up again I'll take up the Pure retention offer, in the two years I was with them I never had to touch the router it just worked flawlessly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,447 ✭✭✭NotShero

Yeah FTTP should be more reliable and consistent compared to HFC, but lots of people are still happy enough with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,630 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

I had VM for two years and it was perfect, looking at the modem log it has Registration complete for the time of the outage hopefully it's ok now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,630 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Well, that was a short venture with VM, speed and latency went to shyt again ending up with no internet. I removed the modem, connected the Pure router back up and everything perfect. I emailed Pure retention and have started a new contract @ €35 per month. I've invoked my cancellation with VM using the 14 day cooling off period link that was in my contract. I couldn't be doing that rebooting the VM modem every few days for the next 2 years, that's a load of bollox 😡

    Hi guys

Contract with pure coming to an end and they are upping the renewal by 10 euro a month so I was thinking of going to sky's 35 a month for 1gig,

Do sky use openeir or virginmedia fibre to serve their broadband? Don't really want another install if I can help it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,864 ✭✭✭ongarite

Sky use all 3 networks but you won't have the choice of which one they pick.

Digiweb is the only one with separate plans & prices for each fibre network

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,109 ✭✭✭feargantae

Sky use all available networks, openeir, SIRO, NBI and Virgin. I'm not sure how they determine which to use when multiple are available but it's no harm to tell them your preference.

My Eir BB, TV and 3 mobiles is going up in price I received an email.

My two year contract ends in July.

I read somewhere I should be exempt or entitled to break the contract because I'm contracted prior to some new rule.

Does anyone know or have advice please?

I'll never do a two years contract again too long IMO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,447 ✭✭✭NotShero

No you most likely aren't able to break the contract, eir have included a price increase each April in their contracts for some time. They did change from the CPI + % model to a fixed price increase in 2025 that saw some people moved to the fixed price increase mid-contract, which allowed people a period to move last year.

They would email you one month in advance of the price increase and tell you if you have a right to cancel.

In future you could go with a provider who doesn't have a fixed price increase each year included in the contract, so if they did increase the price you'd be given a period to leave. Providers like - Digiweb, Pure Telecom, Sky, Virgin Media, Blacknight, Imagine.

I emailed Pure to cancel and they came back with what had already been offered €40 a month, I told them to go ahead with the cancellation and they offered it for €35 which I've taken. Have you looked at the eir deal through switcher? Works out at around €26

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,734 ✭✭✭wiz569

Cannot see that deal available to me, are Sky ok for broadband?

I could go back to virgin coax connection, had it for years with no problems

You can check which access networks are available to you here -

    https://www.comreg.ie/broadbandchecker/

Most providers don't seem to give you the option of which to use, If there is more than one available to you. But you can always ask. Digiweb will let you choose, at different prices for each.

If Virgin FTTP is now available to you, they'll want to install that now.

eir (open eir) 500Mb - €34.99pm for 12m & €50 bill credit. April price increase of €4 next year.

    Pure Telecom OBS 500Mb - €30pm for 12m.

    Sky 500Mb - €30pm / 1Gb - €35pm for 12m.

    Virgin Media (FTTP) 500Mb - €35pm for 12m & €65 bill credit on Switcher.ie.

    Vodafone (SIRO) 1Gb - €35pm for 6m, then €40pm for 6m. April price increase of €3.50.

    Digiweb (SIRO) 1Gb - €37.95pm for 12m.

    Digiweb (Virgin FTTP) 500Mb - €34.95pm / 1Gb - €39.95pm for 12m.

    Digiweb (open eir) 500Mb - €39.95pm / 1Gb - €44.95pm for 12m.

Sky is fine. They all resell the same underlying connections.

If you are getting sky it might be worth bundling in sky stream tv and sky ultimate package. You get TV plus free Netflix, Disney +, and HBO max.

Sky is fine. They all resell the same underlying connections.

Actually thats not the case. When you sign up to use a retailers service, your data travels over the wholesalers fibre to a local exchange or a regional hub. Its at this point that the wholesaler "hands off" your traffic to the retailers core network. This is an over-simplified explanation but you get the idea. A retailers core network characteristics can affect latency (ping), gaming and video buffering.

Contention ratios are another point of difference between a "budget" and "premium" providers. A retailer must pay the wholesaler for the backhaul capacity to carry all their customers data from the exchange to their core network. For example, if a retailer has 1000 customers in an area, but only pays for a 2 Gbps backhaul link, everyones speed will drop during Netflix o'clock. Again over simplified but you get the idea.

This is one of the reasons why one persons experience with a retailer may differ to another use located in a different area.

But I suspect the biggest factor affecting broadband performance is the end users hardware i.e. the router. This especially true for speeds above 1Gbs.

My contract with Sky for 1gb Ultrafast Max for €35 a month was up. I messaged them through WhatsApp and I have signed up for the same again for another 12 months.

Couldn't see any other current offers worth switching for, I had been switching between VF & Sky since the FTH connection was installed in the house when I signed up with VF 3 years ago from VM.

Sky are looking for either my landline number, which I don't have, or my CRN 11 digit number starting with 8882 or 8881 but I can only find a 8882 number but it has a zero in front of it and is not accepted with or without the 0?

What am I doing wrong please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,447 ✭✭✭NotShero

Yeah leave out the zero at the start, that should work with the 11 digits.

You'll probably have to order over the phone if the website is not accepting it.

I see Starlink is now offering their 100 MB package for 29 EUR per month (discounted to 10 EUR per month for the first 3 months).

Hi, could this be dependant on location, on Eircode, or is it more likely it's now expired? Now at €50pm on 24Mnt contract..
