A mate of mine owns a former commercial building in a town centre that he converted into 5 apartments.

He is renting all of them to Ukrainians. He is getting 100% of the rental income.

If he rented those apartments to my kids and their friends who cant get rentals in the town, he would be paying over 50% of income to revenue.

But instead the government's answer is to tell me to put a shed in my garden for the kids to live in. Well done James Brown, well done

It must be hard being a housing minister. I was at a charity fun run a few years ago. The the grandson of Gaybo's accountant, the then housing minister was running. The commentator was entertaining the crowd making housing comments on the Tannoy.

I've neighbours that converted their large brick shed out the back into a residential dwelling a few years ago. Their adult son is living in it with his girlfriend. They're renting a room out in their home, where they can earn up to €10,000 tax free. They never applied for planning permission, and the husband is a Garda. The wife is a nurse. I wouldn't rat on them, they're nice people. But there's all sorts of people out there pulling strokes.
