I had both the 500 and 1gig on the co-ax system, the 500 was rock solid but as you say the 1gig was much less stable, I had to reboot the modem a few times in the year I had it, even on a cable I never touched 1gig in download speed.

It's on their website, as has been said already it must only be available to people on the co-ax system.

I have a question one of you might be able to answer.

Why can my neighbours can get full fibre broadband, while I can only get fibre to cabinet? The neighbours in question are directly across the road from me.

I have emailed open eir regarding this and I haven't gotten a reply in 2+ weeks.

I can't get SIRO as well, it seems to be everywhere in my town, just not my estate.

Very recently, Virgin media have upgraded the network in my area to full fibre but I would rather not go with them as I have had numerous issues with them over the years.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated 😀

With it available to your neighbours, you should be able to go into an eir store with your Eircode and get them to run an "overnight test", that will update the database if FTTP is available. It can take a long time for the results to come back.

You don't have to go with Virgin through Virgin FTTP. You can get Digiweb, Vodafone and Sky through Virgin FTTP.

I think I'll do that so. You absolute legend, thank you very much! I'm presuming you couldn't use the older VM coax with other providers, only FTTP?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,446 ✭✭✭NotShero

No bother! Yeah it's just their FTTP, not coax. A new fibre cable will be brought in and an ONT is installed on the wall for Digiweb, Vodafone, Sky. If you go with Virgin, they'll remove the ONT and use their Hub 5x that has an integrated ONT, which makes it difficult to use your own router as there is no modem/bridge mode.

So I recently posted about signing up to DigiWeb FTTH and then someone turned up when it was pissing rain, sat in his van for 5-10 minutes and went away saying the ducts was blocked. Digiweb told us they couldn't do anything unless we cleared the block ourselves. Anyway we went back to Sky asking if they could sign us up to their FTTH package and sure enough another engineer came out from Virgin media checked out the cables and ran a Fibre cable to the house (not coax) and we are up and running with Sky FB but with a virgin media line

Pleasantly surprised to find pure telecom are now providing WiFi 7 routers even for the 500mb package.
    I received a HUAWEI LG8245B7N.

The VM ducts are rarely if ever blocked. My next door neighbour was getting open eir installed, the feckin eejit ran the guide line down the VM duct from the house and was scratching his head out at the underground drop point in the eir cavity wonder why he couldn't find the guide line🤔🤔. I told him it was in the VM box, he opened the VM box and lo and behold there was his guide line, he drilled a hole through from one box to the other, putting a lovely curve on the fibre line he joined on to the open eir dp, replaced both iron covers, sorted😆👍. VM were working on that box months later, saw his handy work and laughed ☺️ 10/10 for ingenuity I say.

I also got a little white Huawei one which I put into storage. What is good about it? I have Deco mesh so this Huawei is of no use to me.

I just want to say thank you so much. the router came today and I was able to change the details seamlessly.

They are not a great router in my experience to be honest. I moved to Pure from Eir and had terrible wifi signal from the Huawei router compared to the previous Eir router. Manged to keep the Eir router and use that now instead with no more poor wifi signal. My father also moved to Pure recently and noticed really poor wifi signal up stairs. I ended up getting him a wifi extender for his pc upstairs. He never needed one with the old Sky router.

I think he's talking about a different model. The one I have and I'm presuming it's the same as the one you were given is LG8245X6, maybe the newer model is better.

I was delighted to post the above, However, I now see that the reception at the back of the house has deteriorated significantly. There is a big chimney stack between Sagemcom F5685LGE router and the living room TV. If I got a longer cable I could move the router, but the chimney would then cast a shadow elsewhere. I want an easy and economical solution, what am I looking for? a router, a range extender, a mesh, or something else? Any guidance would be appreciated.

A wireless mesh system would be the next best thing after wired access points around the house. A wireless mesh system with a dedicated backhaul band is best but can be quite expensive, so you can try one without first - Deco X10, X50, x55 etc.

It's best to place the mesh into "access point mode" as your Virgin router will still be connected and you can't place it into bridge/modem mode -

    https://www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/1842/

While WiFi range extenders are similar to mesh, there's the possibility with them that not all your devices will roam from your router to the extender seamlessly all of time.

I've switched to Pure from Sky and received HUAWEI LG8245B7N router.
how this router compares with the sky one? I have not installed pure router, as the switch on SIRO in on 27th of March.
Sky router has really good wifi signal.
Pure router has way more configurations options, 2.5Gb LAN ports(1xWAN, 1xLAN).

And the final question, if the huawey router has good wifi signal, can the firmware on it be changed to a custom one?
I'm looking on creating a second guest wifi networks and allocate a different IP class that main network.
From the settings of HUAWEI LG8245B7N it supports a second network, but cannot be assigned for the wifi networks. I'm hopping there are custom ROMs that will allow greater configuration options :)

Switched from Virgin to Eir at start of January, having checked Eir and found our post code is now able for fibre (we have switched over and back to Eir previously but was always via the old phone line and around 80mbps....).

So, several visits from circet later, I'm told there's a problem in the cabinet and Eir must resolve it. We ring Eir and they tell us they'll send out circet... And round and round it goes (with the circet people seeming decent, and telling me they are leaving detailed notes for Eir on what Eir needs to do)... When we contact Eir I suppose we are getting a call centre person but they don't seem to have a clue and just keep dispatching the Circet people... I think we've had 4 different circet vans here now but they can't do anything.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has any issue with Eir like this or any suggestions on how to break through?!

Try submitting a complaint to eir, their complaints team are quite good in my experience. You can get in contact with ComReg 10 days after you've submitted the complaint to eir, you should get a complaint reference number for ComReg.

I’ve sky via Siro and contract is up start of April. So how do I know if I go virgin media that it’ll use Siro or not.

To be honest if Sky kept me on same rate I’m fine with that as work pay up to a certain rate. Is it better to ring, WhatsApp or chat to get best rate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,446 ✭✭✭NotShero

If Virgin Media FTTP/coax is available to you then they most likely won't want to use SIRO, you can check here -

    https://www.comreg.ie/broadbandchecker

The Sky WhatsApp is - 0818716051, ask for cancellation to get to the Loyalty team. Calling may be better though, I'm not too sure.

Watching your thread with interest as I'm 5.5 months into a new contract with Eir and have this exact issue. Eir insisting I'm "in contract" but until fibre is installed wont charge me the lower rate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,236 ✭✭✭wassie

    Do this ^ @wersal gummage

And put Eir on notice in your complaint by mentioning if you dont get satisfactory resolution in a reasonable timeframe you will be lodging a complaint with ComReg.

unless your gaming do yourselves a favour and get a 100 euro 5G router unlocked off cex and a 12.99 48 SIM card. I’m getting 450 download and 30 upload. It’s perfect for work and streaming etc, if you had kids and gaming might be better off sticking to wired as 5G wouldn’t be the best for gaming due to latency.

I just plugged in Pure Telecom Huawei router and changed WiFi details to match previous Sky details. All good so far.

On a speed test, it's still showing provider as SKY. Is it normal? Screenshot:

It looks like you're not switched over yet, i'd give Pure Telecom a ring and see what's happening. It should say BT Ireland or eir as your ISP with Pure Telecom.

I see VM have brought back the €30 activation fee for anyone signing up to the 500meg plan😡

    Ok, thanks.

Pure Telecom told me the transition happens automatically. Maybe I need to restart the router....
