I got a jolt seeing MT's avatar appear here. Deepest condolences to you and all the family and to the people who actually knew him. We'll all miss him, too, even though we only met him through here. The work he did was monumental.

    May Roger/Peter rest in peace.

Heartfelt Condolences to you Sheila & Family.

Whenever the Irish media would become hysterical about the possibility of a few cm of snow, MT's thread would always be the first port of call for myself, and I'm sure many many more to find out was was actually happening.

Someone truly held in the highest regard by these communities

Peter did so much for people on a practical basis, helping them to make decisions for their workday commute, their holidays, their farming and outdoor tasks, and for the safety of themselves and their families in times of severe weather. He has saved us from harm and from money wasted at times too.

As well as that, he grew the interest of so many lay people in the science of the weather and climate, encouraging enthusiastic amateurs across the world, but I think especially here in Ireland, the land of four seasons in one day.

Whenever it happens that we get our next Atlantic storm, or heatwave, or bad snowfall, there is no doubt that there will be a Peter shaped hole in the lives of many in Ireland, who would have rushed to his forecasts and looked for his valuable nowcast updates, either here on Boards or IWO.

To you Sheila and your family and friends, thanks for sharing Peter with us. Many thousands of us are deeply grateful to him and for him and will fondly remember Peter for the rest of our own days. Across the ocean and through the clouds, we offer our support and tribute and hope his memory will be a blessing. It certainly will be to this community. May he rest in peace.

I posted much earlier on the thread, but just want to say it's lovely reading about the ways in which MT's forecasts helped so many.

Whether it was in farming, in judging what was best to do for a business in bad weather, preparing for a wedding day and everything else in between.

Like others I find myself going to his thread still. It was the one thread I followed consistently. I loved the updates of what his own weather was doing also.

It's hard to believe that we can all feel so sad for a person that we did not actually know. A huge loss to boards, but of course the biggest loss of all to you, his dear ones. It's lovely to see that the messages here are bringing some comfort.

    May he rest in peace.

I haven't posted on boards in years, but have continued to regularly check MT's forecast. Very saddened to hear the news. His parting paragraph to each post on his local weather always made his forecasts have a personal connection. What a service over the years. He will be greatly missed. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

14 pages and counting on this Thread, What a testimony to a man most of us here posting never met or knew personally but checked in to his posts regularly probably on a daily basis. I hope his family will in some way take solace from the fact that he was so greatly appreciated and revered here on boards.

It says it all that you won't find anyone with a bad word to say about him - I can't think of anyone else on boards who'd match that.

So, so sad to hear about MT. It feels weird not to check in every day for his steady words of forecast. He will be very much missed. Slán abhaile ár gcara.

    Hi everyone,

MT's family has shared the obituary with me which you can find in the link below to pay your respects to him. This is the best place to emphasise just how much of a positive impact this one man made to our lives and enjoyment on the forum over the many years he has contributed.

As you can imagine if you were in their shoes, it has taken a while to put this together due to it getting hard to accept their final goodbyes to the legend. The family including his wife Sheila and their daughter Jenn are already very thankful for the comments after reading every one of them.

Only seeing this now, really saddened to read it, just said to my wife, MT passed away and she knew exactly who i was talking about, that's the weather man you swear by . RIP and sincere condolences to Sheila and family, all good and great people come to an end, but few can be called a Legend, this man most certainly earned the title of Legend.

At a time where the Internet is going to an ever darkening and uncertain place, MT reflected the very best of the Internet. Doing exactly what it should do. A human behind his computer in a far flung land who went out of his way to help others make decisions, built connections and educate others through a wealth of knowledge and expertise. He enhanced lives, became a part of peoples routines and made their days better. A passion in weather it seems he carried through his life from childhood.

The internet will be a lesser place without him. A force of positivity and showed us all that you can have real impact in the world by your actions even when you think nothing of it.

I can tell people are genuinely heartbroken. Roger left a real legacy and wont be forgotten. Sincere condolences to his family.

"Knew" him from UK "Weather Chat", when I also had a weather page, started in 1995 before Met Eireann joined the internet. Both sites are now gone. Roger was a quiet, towering presence, deeply respected everywhere.

I've always had Boards.ie bookmarked to open on the Weather Forum especially to see MT's daily forecast.
    He will be sorely missed.
    Rest in Peace

Thats early! I remember being in the US on my J1 in Summer 1995 and a guy started telling me about the “World Wide Web”. I hadn’t the faintest idea what he was talking about…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 369 ✭✭kindredspirit

My first web site was at the end of 1994. Six pages, if I remember. Missed being the first website in our city and county by 2 weeks, so was the second. Used to load slowly. Made for me by a student who's now a multi millionaire, whereas I'm not.

I really do miss mt and his daily updates. I used to come on here daily to check. It’s so strange not having that now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 714 ✭✭✭waterfaerie

It is so strange. I still can't bring myself to remove it from my pinned tabs. Every morning I checked his thread before doing anything else. Now every morning I open it up and thank a few posts I never thanked at the time. I feel so sad now that I didn't consistently thank him every day while he was here, even though I read his posts every day.

From Met Éireann, it looks like it may or may not be quite windy here tomorrow. This is when I'd really depend on him to know if it will actually be something I need to bother about or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 820 ✭✭✭davidsr20

ya for sure. It’s a huge part of boards weather now missing. I’m strolling through other stuff to try find daily updates but not much. I wonder will someone carry on his legacy it’s a big feat to take on

Is it me or have the 120 threads gone unusually quiet also

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 887 ✭✭✭Vudgie

I am very sorry to read this news today. M.T got me interested in weather and I will always remember the ramping sessions that we had here anticipating snow on the back of his accurate forecasts. RIP Roger.

Don't beat yourself up over it.

He surely knew how well appreciated he was by all of us. We definitely have to get a storm named after him . It would be fitting if it was a major one. It will just be so strange not to have his analysis of the next storm we get.
