    Hi, yes you are similar to my wife's situation. I have looked back through her paperwork and I have attached her first letter that she received two years ago.

    So yes if you reply with proof that you have worked in Ireland (EU) then you will be entitled to pay for the past 6 years and onwards.

    Why do you not think you are entitled to pay class 2??? At least for the last 6 years anyway.

    This is the criteria needed to pay class 2.

    You have to show that you worked in the UK immediately before leaving. "Immediately" can be how long it takes to move and secure a job a few months I suppose.

    If you worked in the UK (didn't claim social) then left, went back to Ireland and got a job then you are entitled to pay class 2.

    Class 2 contributions are for those expats living and working abroad “but only if you worked in the UK immediately before leaving, and you’ve previously lived in the UK for at least 3 years in a row or paid at least 3 years of contributions.” Class 2 voluntary National Insurance contributions for 2023/24 are a mere £3.45 per week (£179.40 p.a.).

    You should write a cover letter and state why you think you are entitled to pay class 2, that's what we did. Along with proof that you worked in Ireland, maybe the last 6 years would be a good start.

    If you can pay at least the 10 years so you are entitled to the minimum of €65 or so a week. That will be a nice little add onto your Irish pension.

    It's up to you to decide if you want to pay and if it's worth it. But think about it this way it's not much more than prsi and you don't get a choice in paying that. Also the return is next to none, if you look it up the average person lives so long and pay back is very quick like you said.

    Anyone having trouble accessing their HMRC accounts.I tried yesterday and today and not receiving access code-first failures ever.

    Could it be because I lodged a complaint(4 March)and they are treating it as urgent? Got email acknowledgement on the 9th

    Maybe try to clear your cache in settings and in google chrome if you are using chrome. Sometimes it gets stuck and won't let you log in.

    Still no access on any browser-not receiving verification code.Could be due to the end of the tax year coming up.Wil try 7010 to ask how my complaint is progressing before searching for the HMRC technical issue helpline.

    I could them removing access to my account.Then emailing or mailing their resolution to my complaint.

    I lodged a complaint on March 3rd about the failure to assign my payments correctly after over a year of trying to resolve via telephone. Hasn’t impacted on my ability to access my account and my complaint is showing as in progress on my account.

    Problem solved.I was able to register the SIM card on another network and in another phone and get codes.My complaint is showing as in progress alongside my refund request dated January 2025.Some experts say it could be 2 years(from January '25)before I get a resolution.So don't hold your breath griffin100

    I will be asking for interest on the refund.They do it for tax refunds so why not NIC refunds

    I got an email today ironically enough to confirm my complaint had been dealt with and my payments have been reassigned as requested. Took 21 days to get resolved. It will take 48hrs to show up on my online account (fingers crossed!)

    Looking to pay 923GBP to the "GB49 BARC 2020 4830 9447 93" (for Voluntary NI payments from abroad).
    I have set up the payee in my Bank of Ireland account.
    When I go to make the payment, there is no option to say I will pay any fees on the UK side (BoI don't charge a fee on this side).

    What experience have others had? Will the full 923GBP arrive on the HMRC account?

    I use bank of ireland to make payments buy only class 2 at this stage, what fees are you referring to i never occurred fees.

    I pair in £ .

    You can also leave a massage with payment, I always highlight what year payment is for, must say been doing it a while now and never has hrmc not received a payment.

    I made my initial payment through BOI a few years ago, but it was in branch rather than online.

    If memory serves me correct the bank employee advised me to add an additional few quid to the amount to allow for potential fees.

    Since then I've done it through Revolut, which is much more straightforward.

    I have just lodged a complaint too .

    I was told all would be updated by this week online having paid all my gaps in VCs jast July . Still not showing as paid ! They said they had the money but didn't know how to allocate it …twice now ...on the phone for hours to them before .

    Am upset about it .

    I can't understand any circumstances where it wouldn't be worth it unless you're terminally ill.

    You spend 900 to get an inflation linked payment of 300 per year. Pay back is 3 years. Far better than installing solar panels. Possibly 6 years if you're well into higher tax brackets however for me the real value is twofold:

    1/ Planning - Guaranteed income is worth its weight in gold. If UK state pension is 30% of your income then you can reduce ARF requirements by a third. E.g. 660k instead of a million.

    2/ Between the Irish and UK state pension, together with progressive tax bands and tax credits, you WILL survive a mega recession and are unlikely to need to sell the family silver at depressed prices.

    Pay the contributions and take steps to improve your health so you eventually get more out of it

    me and OH did our sums she can pay class 2 for backlog and next 8 yrs for full pension. So no brainer for her

    My case on the other hand, I would be paying class 3 payments for backlog and next 8 yrs.

    I have a good pension and will be already paying in high tax bracket after I retire at 60, so payback wouldn’t start until 75 for me .
    Won’t need the money at that stage

    What sort of pension do you have? ARF? DB?

    TBH if you are going to be on higher tax brackets through an ARF it could make sense to try and get the money out of there early and into one of these new SIAs when they come out. You could end up paying far more tax if it grows out of order later. What I mean is can you strategise so that your tax bill becomes less 'income tax' and more 'CGT/SIA tax shield' over time?

    If that scenario developed it could be less impactful tax wise.

    I was the same, one year on from my payment and no allocation despite a number of phone calls. I had written a letter to them to back up my telephone calls 6 months ago and that was showing on my account as being 'in progress', but it was suggesting that it would not be dealt with until the end of 2026. What will all of the changes happening I didn't want to have it unresolved for so long.

    As I said above my online complaint got resolved in 21 days. My online account is not accessible so I assume it is being updated, but I do have an email from the complaints team confirming the correct allocation of my payments to each year.

    I was worried about the incorrect allocation of my payments as my total contributions were showing online at 7 years when they should have been 16, so I am glad to get that sorted what with all of the changes happening. If things stay as they are that's 45% of a UK pension for €2k of payments, and I still have 13 more years to make additional payments.

    I contacted them by phone about this .Twice . It worked before for all the class 2s .

    Thanks @griffin100 . I am hoping to get a result from the online complaint.

    Its a lot of money for me to have paid out as already retired here with nothing on the system to show for it . They should send people actual letters or emails when they know they have the money instead of leaving people hanging until it is allocated and eventually online .

    I know lack of staff and high numbers of people applying , but really if somebody is sending money to any organisation there is usually a bot message at the very least replying .

    Don't mind me ...I am annoyed and upset at the minute over it . I have only a few years to go but reluctant now to pay for this year if they don't sort this first .

    You won't get through to a caseworker. You'll get through to customer service who can put a note on you file that a caseworker will read when they get to it.

    With Revolut payments is there a way to freetext or flag what year payment is for apart from the SK reference with NIN ? Only made 1 payment before for multiple years and never use Revolut for anything else . Thanks!

    Hi All,

    I recently got the letter showing the class 2 shortfall that I can pay. I was just going about paying it but I noticed while putting together my overseas reference number that mine was slightly different from the one they have in the letter. I realised then that there’s two digits different in my ni number from what is on my payslips from back in the day (2008) to what they are using now. I imagine that’s not normal? I think I’ll go ahead and pay using their reference number but should I do something regarding the ni number being slightly different? The beginning and the end is identical but two digits in the middle are different. Anyone seen anything like that before?

    Ok, panic over (I think) I’ve found documents from back then from the dwp with the ni number that they’re using on them. Looks like the one printed on my payslips was incorrect which I guess is the only thing that would make sense.

    I've actually had that where the payslip NI number was wrong. However in your case I'd double check that you have credit for the NI you paid when the NI number on the payslip was wrong.

    I checked and the correct years are there in the record.
    One thing I noticed in the letter though was the qualifying years. They said that the records show I have 8 qualifying years of contributions. What do they mean by that? I would have thought 5 and I see 5 in the record when I go into the gateway.
