I've no issue with TOB coming back in, in fact I'd agree...but let's stop this nonsense that Stockdale did nothing last week to earn a place. For starters he scored an excellent try and gave a clever try scoring pass to Osborne. You can't just wilfully ignore stuff like that to suit your agenda.

100% this. Rested after a break week would be nonsense too

Only qualm I'd have with that team is that I think Kelleher should start, he was very good last weekend and we need all the help we can get in the scrum.

The 23 jersey is a strange one but completely expected. Farrell is very loyal to Aki. If we lose a winger then it's Ringrose to the wing. Stockdale in the 23 shirt surely would have given better coverage. Even in that scenario if Ringrose was to go down then McCloskey would move out 1 position and Frawley would play 12.

I just noticed we play first in all 5 rounds this year. Is that common?

What agenda have you deduced i happen to have?

Agree Stockade played fine and the way the two of them have been used suggests that Farrell sees both as current Irish wings. The big difference for me was the way TOB and Balacoune played together, both showing up regularly on each other's wings and finishing off scores from the other's pass. That is something the coach will absolutely Love and Im not sure Jacob is as sure about that part of the game. Given his history I'm not that surprised that he was more focussed on making sure he did the business on his own side, which he did. Roving a bit more can come back into his game though.

@standardg60 promoting south Dublin private school boys. We'll see how well TOB goes when it's a competitive match and not this English team.

This is exactly it. Stockdale provides far better cover given Frawley is there and you'd be hard pressed to claim he is playing worse.

Let's wait and see but it would be utterly baffling.

Well done on exposing your own agenda in fairness..

@standardg60 - not at all. Stockdale played well last week and it's bizarre you pretend he didn't. Come back to me after the weekend sure

Fully agree with your last bit. The France match especially. We kept kicking to TOB and he was getting no change at all. Fogarty at half time says... we need to kick more or words to that effect.

At least we've shown different attacking gameplans throughout the tournament, we're not quite England!

stockdale wont be picked when mack / keenan are back from injury. JJ Kenny is a better winger than him in the long term anyway.

    hopefully Doak gets another game

JJ Kenny with next to no European rugby and zero international experience?

Jesus lads you'd want to ease back on the hype a small bit. Can't be anointing every single player who has a couple of decent URC games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,730 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Maybe he gets there but Kenny is a long way off right now. His positioning on both sides of the ball needs work, and he doesn't seem to have a kicking game. All very understandable considering how little 15s he has played, he needs to keep developing with Leinster for now.

I'm not going to judge because I got overexcited about Finn Treacy when he was on his hot run of form last year, and thought he could bolt for the summer tour. I've noticed a bit of a pattern with young guys who break out scoring a load of tries, they tend to suffer a bit in the second season, and when the tries dry up and the confidence drops a bit the defensive errors and unpolished skills become a bit more obvious.

I'm not sure anyone is arguing Stockdale didn't 'play well' the last day, but that he didn't do anything to threaten O Brien after O Brien's performance against england and in the autumn. O B was got established in the team in the autumn and Stockdale earned his shot against france but O B had more credit in the bank at that stage when both were terrible.

I don't think Stockdale played very well last time out, try aside.

I think he will be doing well to be seen in green again. He will likely be relying on an injury crisis.

Stockdale did fine last week, I wouldn't look on this as being "dropped", just like TOB losing out after his display against England was not being dropped, it was rotation. Stockdale and Timoney probably did need to show a bit more against Wales to keep their spots but neither played badly.

I don't know if either Stockdale or TOB have done enough in the last six months that they'd be involved if Lowe was fit, and definitely not if Keenan and Hansen were available.

If he picks Aki that would be absolutely bizarre.

Scotland have named their side. As expected, they're pretty light in the second row. You'd think this would be prime opportunity for Ireland to really grind away at them with pick and goes and tight phase play.

The media seem to think we're going 5-3 off the bench, but it might be a day for a 6-2 split to ram home our advantage up front.

If its on the bench then I could accept that, he has been such an effective member of Farrells teams for a while now, he has rarely let us down.

He did all he can do. Scored a try….first since 2021. Offload for another.

He cant catch a ball in the air. Main reason Ireland didnt kick as much……Paris LEARNINGS

    gettyimages-2265150247-612x612.jpg

    He managed to regather this..

TOB was always coming back in for this game. That bit better in the air……Paris LEARNINGS & far quicker than Stockdale.

Baloucoune & TOB are the fastest duo Ireland has started in years & years.

I'm not taking them lightly at all but Scotland haven't won an away game against a top 3 finisher since France in 2021. I believe the last time in front of fans was against us in 2010.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,129 ✭✭✭Rugbyf565

Stockdale will be 31 in the next World Cup. JJ Kenny has good acceleration, is abrasive in contact, can win high balls and is a good defender. We all need to follow Frances approach of promoting our younger wingers to the senior squad, mobility is everything nowadays. Stockdale looks really sluggish at times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,413 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Scotland will be motivated, it's their biggest game in years. But let's just say that what I think will happen is something I'm not prepared to say out loud.

Nevertheless, Scotland have electric backs, an excellent out half and we will need to be at our best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,730 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

We are not France. Attissogbe and and Bielle-Biarrey have 55 and 86 top class club games under their belt respectively, Kenny has 10. That game time means their decision making in particular is much more robust than an equivalent Irish player. I have seen Kenny made some really poor reads in defence and get put into touch more than he should while in possession. That's the kind of fundamental error that I expect will be eliminated from his game by the time he has equivalent experience to the French pair, but could be extremely costly in a 6 Nations game.

To my mind, the best performers on the wing for the 5 other teams have been the more experienced ones; Steyn (32), Ioane (31), Lynagh (25), and Baloucoune (28). For England, Arundell has been a disaster, with the older and less "exciting" Roebuck being far more effective.

Im prepared to say it!! Ireland are going to smash the Scottish forwards to bits around the field.

They have lost their starting locks. Compare that to what the Irish changes are:

    4. McCarthy
    6. Beirne
    7. van der Flier
Moving MOTM Conan to the bench

Scrum is a different matter but it didnt stop them against England and Wales.

I will concede Furlong is a concern (&TOT). He was done after 40mins v Wales.
