Part of Western ideology is that democracy is the only legitimate form of government.

(Double negative bonus points for Iran for having a cleric as dictator.)

Yet attempts to "install" democracy, like in Iraq and the Arab Spring, usualy just create a bloodbath.

The Trump Administration are spinning the increased oil prices and fallout from Iran as "Short term pain for long term gain". The fear is that we will not only have short term pain but long term pain also

They're trying to do damage control seeing their precious stock markets take a dive. They've very badly misjudged this but it probably even still won't change the minds of their blinded supporters.

I wouldn't read too much into hockey player talk, it's a high impact game and any Canadian and US players I ever met definitely exuded a jock culture that would make our worse rugger bugger sound elegant.

Trump's expected visit to China has now been announced by Beijing as a reduced to one day, and I bet even if he does attend they will not allow him any kind of platform for him to spew his boil from. I reckon he won't go.

I hope Micheal Martin makes a stand against Trump next week. And the Irish media make a name for themselves asking hard questions. 😋

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,282 ✭✭✭✭walshb

A stand like what? Challenging Trump will only result in Trump losing his sh1t and going on a tirade…what's the point of this?

Martin is not going there to lecture America on its foreign policy, and never should. The trips are about relations and fostering good communications. No need whatsoever for Ireland to try be all bullish and self-important by lecturing Trump and his administration on how they are operating.

The current US actions are for one purpose only and that is to distract away from the Epstein Files and how Trump is probably implicated in the rape and murder of children. As a tactic, it looks to be working quite well because it has left the front page news. You also need to bear in mind that the US deliberately targetted a kids school with a double tap bombing so let's not assume that there is currently any moral fibres there.
So to think that Martin going over to the WH and effectively insulting his host, whomever that may be, would be a very stupid move. As I previously posted, Martin should hand over the bowl of weeds, keep his mouth shut and GTFO without making a balls of it by getting jumping into the middle of Trump's deliberate paedo distraction because it certainly won't work out well for him and, by default, it won't work out well for Ireland.

He should be like Keir Starmer and Friedrich Merz and take all the sh1te that is thrown his way and then come back here and get humiliated by the Irish electorate and his EU colleagues.

Is that what you are saying?

Personally speaking, I hope Trump ridicules him when he's over there next week and it might shorten his tenure when he returns home with his tail between his legs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,282 ✭✭✭✭walshb

The purpose of these visits is not, and was never for Ireland to lecture and criticize and tackle the U.S. President on how he and his administration are operating. And no matter how many couch potatoes think we should, we should not!!!

And why would you be hoping that Trump publicly ridicules our Taoiseach? Hardly something to be applauded and encouraged.

What's still sinister about the Epstein/Maxwell paedo ring, is that it isn't just MAGA nuts who are still threatening the abused women and reporters investigating. It's that people are presently being paid to harass them. I found this quite shocking.

If you are aware of it why don’t you mention it? Do you have no understanding how serious it is? Cathal Kelly was offensive but he is a random journalist. Now explain what the US GOVERNMENT is doing in its TikTok account altering the words of a hockey player and causing grevious offence to its friend and neighbour. ‘51st state’ isn’t just trolling - it’s a blatant threat to destroy Canada.

Jeekers, I am about to have my blood pressure measured by my GP - not great preparation!

If I'm not mistaken the shamrock presentation was never counted as an actual government visit, it happened as part of a bigger US-Irl-UK framework of normalisation by putting NI leaders into the same room together.

I can understand why for anyone unfamiliar with those peace talks how the shamrock visit appears almost like some kind of annual supplication. However it really was a US instigated tradition as "another place" away from NI for leaders to refresh focus.

Trump probably only sees the visit as a grovelling supplication completely out of spirit with the first invitation from that office. If Trump uses the visit to spit more venom at everyone I don't think anyone in Ireland would be worried if the tradition started in the spirit of reconciliation was suspended.

It's not like Trump gives a fig about Ireland whenever he visits Drumbeg.

He's criticised Israel on its actions in Gaza, rightly enough, and support of Israel has been an utterly unshakeable piece of US foreign policy for decades - perhaps never more so than under Trump. Who can forget the footage of Trump pulling a chair out for Netanyahu to sit down in, like he was a White House usher? Trump the man who finds opening a door by his own hand to be below his station.

But he's never going to do it to Trump's face.

I suppose it underlines that when push comes to shove, the Irish government isn't really going risk flushing its economy down the toilet by taking a stand over Israel directly against Trump and potentially have the drive to pull American corps out of Ireland put up to 11 as retaliation. I'm sort of surprised Netanyahu didn't instruct Trump to savage Martin last year, Zelensky-style, at the White House sit-down, just 'cause he could…

If he gets enough questions in a row about his paedophilic proclivities, his corruption, his acting on behalf of Putin/Netanyahu instead of the American people, there's a good chance one of those tirades might just induce a heart attack and secure the journalist who asked the final question a place in history? Seems like a worth the trying to me…

Brent crude hit $117 overnight. It's back below $100 already. Are markets thinking this may not go on much longer, or maybe oil will start moving again

I don't think Trump can keep the war going if oil prices are that high as it's so unpopular in the US,if the price stays down he will probably keep killing people.
