I also have the same set up as yourself, huawei inverter with a 5kw battery. Have you found the Luna batteries online for a reasonable price? I cant see 5kw for less than 2k

I'm currently thinking of getting rid of the inverter and battery and switching to a different brand inverter and adding a large battery package from one of the above suppliers. I have an east west orientation with 2 x 5.5kw strings. The main benefit of the huawei is that my 6kw inverter can cope with peak solar generation (I think the highest I saw last summer was 9.9kwh) as it can send 6kw (in theory) to battery and 6kw to grid or usage, so can manage 12kw solar generation at peak times.

Does anyone here know if the Solis or Sofar inverter has that feature? My electricity bill was for 1100 over December / January. That stung, so I would like to have bigger batteries for added night rate usage.

If you had a had a bill for €1100 for two months, irrespective of solar, then you have a serious consumption issue, which you urgently need to look into.

I run the house, an EV and 5kW heatpump, and it was around €300 net for the same period.

If you have a heatpump, what was it's consumption for the same period ?

My winter bill was 600 odd euro, but if i wasnt load shifting a lot to night rate it would have been touching 1200 if everything was on 24 hr rate.

as you can get 15kWh+ for less than 2k, not even DIY an inverter swap may be on the cards (the new s6 solis look nice)
(or sunsynk or deye are also v good choices)

Would you be on a legacy NC6 with a 6kW inverter? You can do a straight swap without a new NC6

Yeah I'm on legacy nc6, got it in before I got the solar installed. Usage is high, yeah, but running ev on it, and we are in a new build for the first winter so lots of tweaking to be done with the system. It was our first proper payable bill of the year after microgen credits ran out so I'm not too worried about the outlay. Our heat pump is 12kw also. Thanks for the advice Graeme, I'll have a look into them inverters.

Have you a big battery for load shifting? I was trying to charge on night rate but the 5kw would be gone early in the day and solar generation is pretty much nil at the moment.

My heatpump is 12kW, but thats output, not the power required.

Also running a farmyard too, (dry stock but we crush our own barley)

Have 2 16kWh packs and about 30kWh useable in CALB cells. Only can put 30kWh into them at night, really depends on if the car needs charged or not. Have a rectifier to boost the charge rate too.

Batteries I have is over kill, but I only discharge to 40% in the winter as a reserve incase of a power outage. (And I'm only able to put 40% in roughly a night)

I'm not sure what the consumption was, but it's definitely the largest contributor to usage I would imagine. I don't have any meters so that might be a good shout to look into. I presume it'd just be something like this:

Power Meter Plug Energy Monitor Watt Meter Backlight Large LCD Display UK Plug with 7 Modes Electricity Usage Monitor Consumption KWH Amp Volt Meter Outlet : Amazon.ie: DIY & Tools

Or is there a better way of doing it? Thanks!

Most heat pumps have a control panel that allows you to see energy usage.

Look on the controller for Energy statistics.

Look for Power Consumed and for Energy / Heat Generated

I'm curious about he Huawei inverter. Would it require some configuration to setup two way (grid/usage and battery) energy export? I'm curious as FITs are falling flat here in Melbourne.

I've got a couple of questions about solar batteries — would love your thoughts!

There's a great deal on offer right now for Australian households and small businesses through the federal government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

You can read more about the rebate here:

    https://ipromiseaustralia.com.au/federal-battery-rebate-australia/

My local installer has quoted me on two options:

    1. Tesla Powerwall 3
    2. BYD 13.8 kWh

Putting cost aside — which one would you go with for better battery life and overall performance?

And a quick follow-up: does Tesla actually use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry in the Powerwall? I've heard LFP batteries tend to last longer — is there any truth to that?

I'm getting quotes for solar at the moment and I'm wondering what the negatives are of getting a battery like deligreencs one linked earlier?

I know id be looking for the installer to install a hybrid inverter, but would not getting a battery as part of the install rule out the installer being able to install a cut over switch?

Any recommendations for inverters I should be looking to get or avoid if I wanted to go down this route?

And I assume these need to be installed inside?

    Thanks

I have a friend who already has a hybrid inverter but has no battery.

They are thinking of ordering a battery and hiring a electrician to install it.

Any idea how much would an electrician cost to do this assuming it is installed full up to code with its own breaker? Is it more than 2 hours work?

A couple of hours should do it, it's very straightforward work.

Note that your friend when buying a battery should be aware that they need to buy a battery which works with their inverter. The manufacturers website of the battery should tell you which inverters it'll work with.

Happy to be corrected but my understanding is that electricians are only responsible for AC side and not DC.

Therefore, I believe that there are no specific "regulations" with regard to connecting a battery.

There is more common sense regarding fusing and cable sizes adequate for the load, and cables terminated well

Just ordered the 32kw version based on your experience, thank you!

Any recommendations for a 5kWh battery compatible with Solis inverter?

Have a small 3kW system without battery but would like to add one. Thankfully installers left cables to connect battery to inverter in a box up there, so hoping for a plug and play set-up.

According to the HDF file analysis on energypal, a 10 kWh setup would basically eliminate any daytime usage.

However, the inverter is located in attic so battery weight a key consideration to get it up the stira, so thinking 5kWh on that basis. Or how are people getting larger/heavier ones up there?

Hi, DIY you can build in situ, a few threads on here cover just about everything you need to know and help always available.

Something like a 5Kwh WECO is just about manageable by a couple of strong guys and will fit through attic hatch, bear in mind the weight of these things, 16Kwh DIY is 120 Kg.

Solis will work with just about any battery on the market, be it DIY or factory built.

Can anyone recommend where to get 50mm2 battery to battery cables, preferably in Ireland or Europe? There's some on aliexpress but i'm not sure what the quality is like. looking for 1.5m with m8 lugs.

Hi. I currently have 10kwh of batteries. I would like to double this capacity ie buy a new battery of 20kwh capacity and sell the others. What are the best off the shelf options for a Solis inverter? Thanks.

what make of BMS comes in this box?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 456 ✭✭mjatkey

Hi, just add a 16Kwh DIY battery to the existing, most cost efficient way, we have 2 x WECO 5K's and a Seplos 16KwH hanging off a Solis 5K, works well. Plenty of help and advice on here and a good series of video's from our very own ghost on YouTube on the Seplos series of DIY batteries.

Thanks for the reply. I have a Solis inverter and Puredrive batteries. Can I add on a Seplos battery to the existing batteries?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 154 ✭✭zenith90

    Thanks for the reply mjatkey.

I had sort of discounted going the DIY build route but your comment had me relook into it again and it probably is the best long term solution and also the most realistic way to get something up into the attic.

I’ve gone with the Deligreen DIY kit with 17kWh of EVE 314 Ah cells and will put it together in under the inverter. Based on a few videos it seems straightforward to put together and hopefully is more or less plug and play with the Solis inverter.

Will plan to build a basic insulated frame for the battery case, at least for the coming Winter, as it can get cold up there.

Yeap don't see why not as long as they have the same number and type of cells as the Seplos, does the Solis use a specific CAN connection setting for the Puredrive's, ether way you can just parallel the Seplos to the existing batteries or use a bus bar and parallel them that way.

Good choice, pretty much same as a Seplos. I think maybe there is a heat pad option on the newer Seplos, if not you could add something like I did. Couple of reptile heat mats, 60watts, I just plug them in during the cold spells leave them on half power setting, work fine. The DIY's that you can access the BMS will allow you to reduce the temperature to allow max charging but probably not to be recommended. The WECO's reduce charge current at 10 degrees and again at 5 I think.

They contacted me a few months ago to ask if I would review their product and to ask my terms. I told them that as long as they sent the product with all duties paid, I would review it. I told them I would have full editorial control, but would provide the specs they wanted me to share and then give my own honest take on the product, good, bad, or whatever. They didn't like that, so I personally wouldn't buy it, if they only wanted a paid for review. Could be great, but it makes me wonder.
