Thanks, what invertor should i be looking for?

Is it literally a case of getting the invertor installed, connecting the battery to it and on you go? What software do people use to manage the batteries (i am pretty ok on home assistant but presume thats just for reporting rather than controlling)

I went with Solis, as that's what is most common. I opted for the one with the larger colour screen.

The battery (imo) needs a few settings changed, especially if building your own. The fogstar ones come with a Seplos BMS and JK Active balancer. I built 3 of these. I left the balancer settings alone and just changed the BMS settings to make sure the batteries would fully charge given the allowable time.

The inverter requires a couple of settings changed to allow for the battery to be recognised.

I have a couple of videos on YT to help you with those. Look at @GaryOnPower and you'll find what you need.

Home Assistant can control some inverters via intermediate hardware / interfaces, so therefore some inverters can be remotely controlled.

The obvious main use is to dump spare battery power back to the grid at the end of a day, until maybe xx% remains (or moreso, if I have xx% @ 22:00 then start dumping from a particular start time, or at a particular discharge rate, or both)

So ordered 2 16kW batteries (1 for myself and neighbour) from FogStar, Here's a couple of details that might help anyone else looking to do the same thing.

Got them delivered to border parcel motel in belcoo without issue. Fogstar/delivery company (Helm) sent a Google form and asked for preferred delivery date, got a call from BPM at 12 that date to say it was there. As was picking it up the following day, they stored it in the warehouse at the back of the Mace petrol station 100m up the road. €55 euro for that. The two pallets were bound as one,

    • Height: 84 cm
    • Length: 97 cm
    • Width: 49 cm

No one to drive the fork lift at the time, but two of us were able to separate the crates, and manhandle each into the back of a Sorrento 7 seater. We're both strong enough, there’s no lip on the boot and I had a little trolley to help slide it in, but I'd recommend having more man power if you're doing it that way!

There were 2 x 50mm2 cables, with M8 lugs crimped on both ends, and a cheap CANBUS and RJ45 cable with them. I had to go back to my original installer to get the original cables that came with the Solis. No problem there, but he did mention that, while he wasn't familiar with the battery, he would add an DC isolator and Earth bond the battery case to the Solis inverter case

@...Ghost... , you seem to be the expert, and I noticed you didn't add the earthing in your videos. What's your take on this?

Ghost added an earth block to his system. I have one as well which I must connect. Earths daisy chained atm.

    Any thoughts on this: https://www.gobelpower.com/eu-stock-gobel-power-512v-lifepo4-battery-case-diy-kit-with-eve-314ah-cells_p262.html

Shipping an extra ~260e, but to the Republic I think.

Just an update on this, I decided to go for a Docan Panda battery before Christmas. I had looked at DIY but decided against it. I ordered the 32kWh battery around the 15th December expecting delivery after Christmas but was surprised to have it delivered by the 21st. The total cost including delivery to the house and admin charges was $2850 (roughly €2560 at the time). Installation of the battery was relatively simple. I was able to reuse the fuses and cables of the previous battery as even though the battery can charge and discharge at 200aH I'm limited to 90 with my current inverter.

I had some tweaking to get it working initially but that was more down to me incorrectly wiring the communications (swapping CAN-L and CAN-H cables) and subsequently to get it to charge to 100% from the grid. Setting the SOC directly at the inverter limited it to 90% even if it was set to 100%. Downloading the Sofar Cloud app allowed to set remotely and charge to 100%.

Fully charging takes nearly 7 hours but in that time (13% to 99%) it stores over 32kWh. Ideally I'd like that to be much shorter but can more than live with it at the moment.

Thanks to everyone here for all the advice over the last few years. I'm now in a much better position energy wise.

    €2560 for 32kWh is 🤯

I paid about €2400 for my GobelPower 15kWh just 18 months ago.

Batteries are getting so cheap. Long may it continue.

Some installers are still gouging on batteries so any newbies buyer beware!

Any reason for going for gobelpower over this one? https://deligreencs.com/products/jk-51-2v-300ah-battery-pack-system-stackable-diy-kits-with-jk-bms-and-active-balancer?variant=55105376289148

Shipping is free with deligreecs. I've been humming and hawing for too long. Looking to order one asap.

None at all. Just am a fan of Andy's Off Grid Garage and he did a review of it - He spent a little time on compression plates as well.

The one I linked can be stacked vertically. Not sure the one you linked can.

But I do see this aswell - https://deligreencs.com/products/pre-assembled-16kwh-51-2v-lifepo4-solar-battery-pack

But again, no compression bolts in the middle.

Maybe some here who are more experienced can add some to this conversation.

    I'm still just looking.

That deligreecs 17 kWh battery is only 32kg? Am I reading that right?

How much was delivery on this?

What inverter are you using with it?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 7,609 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

No 17kWh is about 100, the box itself would push 30!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37 viewofthehill

The battery itself was $2500 ($2735 including delivery to the door) with a 5% Paypal charge added (may be less using bank transfer) to bring it to $2850

My inverter is the 6kW Sofar (HYD 6000-EP)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭bunderoon

So 1,337 euro including delivery. That's unreal isnt it..

    Hi Folks,

I'm new to the PV side of things and I'm looking for some input on charging options. I recently installed a 5kw Solis inverter, 15kw of dyness batteries and 8.8kwp of panels. I am currently on the pinergy EV plan with a 3hr cheap window. This just about charges the battery to full and may not every night. I can see myself adding more battery in the future. Without moving to another provider with an extended window what are my options to get any extra battery charged in the 3hr window.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,659 ✭✭✭championc

@ptogher14 look on AliExpress for an Emerson / Vertiv R48-3000e3 which is a 3kW rectifier.

    There is also a 3kW Huawei R4850-G2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 303 ✭✭ptogher14

Thanks for the response @championc. Does this bypass the BMS? How is the charge controlled?

The BMS will manage the cells in the battery, and will manage a max charge and discharge current limit, but it doesn't initiate the charging or discharging

Does anyone offer Sig batteries for good value (and install).

Have enough people successfully ordered from this website to consider it legit. This is an awesome price for this battery with free delivery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,564 ✭✭✭positron

We have at least one report of successful order and delivery from them in earlier in this thread.
I am going to order one in a few weeks once I finish three other project that I am currently behind on.

Don't wait too long. LFP Battery prices are at rock bottom right now but lithium and silver prices have increased massively in the past 12 months which will soon feed through to higher battery prices.

Hopefully someone here can answer this. I have a Huawei inverter and one Luna battery (5kW). It charges at a rate of 2.5kWh overnight. I'm thinking of adding a second 5kW battery. Would a second battery charge at the same time as the first or only start charging when the first has finished?

But that doesn't necessarily mean that both will charge at 2.5kW each simultaneously.

I'm fairly sure the max charging rate from the grid is only 3 or 3.5kW
