34 tackles by Mann and 28 by Jenkins is mind-blowing.

JGP showed again why he was dropped in the first place. Sure he looked great when playing with a point to prove in Twickenham but let's face it he's too old and slow to routinely put in those performances. Ireland at its peak was rapid fast at getting the ball away, something a woeful Welsh team were better than us at tonight.

The one major positive about this experiment of playing him at LHP is that he would be a major asset in a RWC squad being able to prop on both sides. After his solid performance tonight it's an experiment worth sticking with.

As far as kicking in behind them, kind of hard to do that, when the nine is passing to forwards at almost every ruck..

Agreed, the organization outside 9 was abysmal

Ya, Mann deserved the POTM tbh but I get it generally goes to the winning team especially at home.

I'd agree with these ratings. The one comment I'd make is that Doris is crossing the line a bit too much discipline wise. He needs to watch it. I get that he's playing it on the edge and is very effective at slowing the opposition's ruck but he seems to be straying over the line too far of late.

My 23 for the Scotland game would be as follows

Osborne, Baloucoune, Ringrose, McCloskey, TOB, Crowley, JGP, Conan, JVDF, Beirne ©, Ryan, McCarthy, Furlong, Kelleher, TOT

Loughman (if fit), Sheehan, Clarkson, Doris, Timoney, Doak, Sam, Stockdale.

I've a feeling though Farrell will bench Conan and Doris will start at 8 and also Aki may appear in the 23 jersey 🤭

when Conan, a player that’s not an automatic starter is your MOTM then something is very off.

Beirne is Irelands most consistent solid performer and it’s not until he’s gone that we will fully appreciate his game. 80 mins on the clock, Wales attacking and he’s the one that turns it over.

Furlong after years of being superhuman is starting to look very ordinary.

I think we have the hooker decision wrong on who starts and who comes on.

We owe the entire 6 nations performance to one coach, and it’s not AF. If it wasn’t for what Murphy has done in his short time in Ulster this entire 6 nations would be a washout. Where he has taken Ulster to and put players like Mccloskey, Bcoune, TOT, Doak, stockdale and Timony has been a massive boost to Ireland and not a moment to soon. If you took the ulster contingent out of that team we are in wooden spoon territory, They should make Mccloskey captain against Scotland because it’s and Ulsterman that should be lifting silverware next week.

Crowley is getting involved to much defensively, he’s going into way to many rucks and needs to sit back and orchestrate more. That welsh defensive line needed a chip over the top or on the ground to be kept honest and it never came.

both JC and SP have changed their techniques in the last year or so

Look at Doris. Takes the ball and does the normal crash forward. I have never once seen Doris offload. And if that is your captain then how braindead are the others

Logged on and then remembered why I come here so little.

Crowley's place kicking is an issue but to say he had a poor game is very wide of the mark. His kicking from hand in open play was excellent. He took his own try well and got us down the pitch for Conan's off the back of the scrum before winning us a penalty at the lineout by taking a quick one when Wales hadn't retreated which got us 5 out. He also rescued us after two very good Welsh kicks in behind, albeit Ringrose ended up getting turned over on the next phase on the first of those. Aside from all that he was lively with the ball in hand and his passing was good apart from one stray ball.

As to his place kicking: Crowley is currently sitting somewhere close to 72% which we can all agree isn't good enough. However, there is plenty of time for that to improve. Sexton, at the very same age, was dropped for a RWC quarter final because his place kicking was knocking around 30 odd percent during the tournament. He eventually became a plus 80% kicker. Just to be clear, that was Sexton at 26 years of age, the same age as Crowley. So while it's not ideal there is still plenty of time to improve. The fact he is consistently shanking the ball suggests that he's getting too much lateral movement, he's going across the ball rather than through it. One way to fix this is by widening his stance so it's more side on. However, I'm sure Sexton or whoever is coaching our kickers is working on this.

I must say it never ceases to amaze me how the usual crowd always look for their scapegoats on here after an average or poor performance. Crowley scored nearly half our points and got us into position for another 5. He was one of the reasons we won today. The bitterness on here is something else.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,272 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

I mentioned this after the first 6N game. They are pointing the ball at the corner flag and it’s kfcuking wierd.

This is the most f*ck it I'm gonna post after 7 pints of all time.

Means nothing, no critical thinking, just vibes.

    Pathetic

not at all, most kickers who position the ball 'upright' will do that, it opens up the sweet spot and can help minimise the natural curve that will be added when the ball is kicked. Wilkinson, O'Gara, Sexton etc all did/do this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,272 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

I think Crowley is doing wayyyyy to much defensive work. He is hitting rucks like a BR player and maybe he needs to take a step back from some of them and let them unfold before committing.

It’s not a surprise he can’t turn around from 12-15 phases of play and make a kick when he has been so heavily involved in them

maybe it works for some kickers, but it’s a change on 12 months ago and it seems a very drastic and very sudden change to make.

yeah i think his run up is inconsistent because when his ball flight is perfect when he catches it properly, it might be rushing it because he is always close enough to timing out on his kicks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,716 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Did Doris not offload in the tackle in the build up to Tommy O'Brien's try against England two weeks ago? I thinked Doris offloaded to Baloucoune who passed to TOB

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,837 ✭✭✭sprucemoose

i agree with this to be honest, it great in theory that he is looking for work defensively but he probably needs to stay out of things a bit more

the ball position in itself isnt a big thing, both SP and JC have changed their kicking style in the last year or so

which isnt uncommon, again Wilkinson, O Gara & Sexton would have changed fairly significantly throughout their careers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,217 ✭✭✭TomsOnTheRoof

I agree with you on that. He was hitting too many rucks today and oddly enough he was covering the 13 channel quite a bit in defence. You don't want your fly half being your fourth highest tackler and hitting that many breakdowns.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,272 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

    Conan is 33.

While age is one big factor in deciding on a players position in a squad Conan is probably a massive exception because his level of mileage is very different to others.

He is a player that does best after a break, others need to play to hit their peak, like Ringrose, but Conan plays best when used sparingly.

A very good example of the type of player needed to develop a RWC winning squad

The point is fairly obviously that criticism of the kicking coach because our kickers are performing terribly is provincial bs!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭longjohn200

Munster fan here to defend Crowley.

He lacked leadership and wasn't good. Move on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,272 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

the ball position isn’t a big thing but the change is. And it reads to me like they don’t have the confidence in the change that they need to have, or that they are not familiar / comfortable / confident enough in it yet.

It seems like a really stupid time to change something like that tbh.

Those missed kicks haven’t decided any game. YET.

I'd hate to be Jack Crowley had we lost, a TBP win and the knives are out for him, where he himself scored one of them.

He's definitely not giving himself enough time to set up. He needs to get into the habit of taking the ball from the scorer as soon as a try is scored and preparing for the quick. That should be his first priority. I also think he needs to kick from a wider angle, more side on, but that's just my opinion. I've never seen him kicking up close so couldn't offer anything more concrete than that but I do think it would help him get through the ball far more and stop the shanking.
