What I would like to know is how the 10s kicking percentages have fallen off a cliff since they started this new kicking style, that is supposed to help their kicking..

Bit of a come down from the England result, but it sets up the final weekend nicely. You would have snatched someone’s hand off if they offered you this situation before the 6N started.

I did not come in here after the English game as I wanted to see how they tonight.

There is no doubt in my mind that it is the coaching ticket that is the problem.

either Farrell replaces fogarty sexton and O’Connell soon or he will be the one being replaced. It’s really as simple as that.

Our scrum and lineout are poorly coached, our 10s look like men who are petrified they are going to miss a placed ball and then end up doing so further compounding the problem.

We need better coaches and we need them fast.

Well he had 10 in the first half and looked very capable.

Looks better than Casey is what I'm saying

Show me a player who didn't make a mistake and I'll show you a liar.

Like I said, top meters made, 3 defenders beaten, 1 clean break from 9 runs.

He was all over our attack and had to force it at times because the shape was quite agricultural outside him. It really only changed in the last 30 minutes when the subs came on and the game broke up a bit.

I really really hope we kick much more against Scotland, the game was crying out tonight for some territory.

Hoping for a better performance next week… another lacklustre one, even with a win, and I'm not sure you'd be raving about this 6 Nations in terms of progress… even if we finish second. Would love to see us stuff the Scots.

I'm a Casey fan but would like to see more of Doak regardless, we need to develop more options at 9. Not sure I'd be declaring him #2 based on 10 minutes off the bench though…

Timoney didn't have much for the highlights reel, in attack anyway, 9 tackles in defence. Had hoped for a bit more from him.

I'm not sold on Osbourne at all yet, Frawley MkII at the moment. Everyone saying centre is his best position, I'd like to see it before judging him fully (and he is only 24 to be fair, so I'm probably being harsh). He can do a job at FB, as could Crowley or JOB, but he's woefully slow. Didn't do well in the air tonight, but then we're not doing well as a team.

Once again I'm left wondering is James Ryan hitting ruck after ruck 'cos he sure as hell isn't tackling anyone, maybe I'm old-fashioned but I want my second row making more than 5 tackles a game like he's done twice this tournament. Joe had double his tackle count in his short time on the pitch, all the subs outworked him. And it's not like Wales didn't have loads of possession throughout the 80. Fair enough if he is buried in rucks… that said, he did have some highlight reel moments, couple of poor penalties too though.

TOT had a fine game, thought Kelleher did well too (top tackler at 17 made with Doris, McCloskey with 15, Crowley and Doris on 14). Furlong looks like his race is run sadly, in the scrum anyway…

The mistake on the try from Balacoune was poor but he did very well otherwise, always a threat and some lovely passing and offloading. Thought Stockdale was tidy too.

Lots to work on, fair play to Wales, huge effort - look at their tackle stats. We definitely pressured them attack but they stood very firm

As much as i want Jack to succeed unless he ups his kicking stats he is always going to be looking over his shoulder at those waiting to replace him .He must be the worst out half in the 6 Nations when it comes to kicking even his kicking from hand is not great. His tackling is first rate but constant goal kicking for an out half is a must

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,102 ✭✭✭shootermacg

Personally, I think he's a bit up his own hole. Like the simplest and best pass for his 5M intercept was to just throw it to the next man, but he's gone all Hollywood.

Wales had more 0-3 second rucks tonight than us. Slow ball is dead ball.

Very disappointing but not surprising. We tend to struggle v Wales and they have improved as the tournament has gone on.

More questions than answers. The scrum was a major problem, as it tends to be. Far too much rugby played in our half. A total lack of game control by numbers 9 and 10. Which allowed Wales to make it a dog fight.

Subs looked good when they came on, perhaps could have been earlier?

Individually. Well I'm not going there. Leave it to others. But we do have problems.

you can not like a player but at least show some bit of objectivity and realism, jut piling on crowley is a bit ridiculous. very little of it actually being true too

both JC & SP have been mismanaged

Harry Byrne is decent but he is being overhyped a bit due to performances that were decent enough but nothing special, along with a kick which took alot of bottle to be fair. dont really see him as anything past a 3rd choice option at this stage

Frawley is much better suited to 12 than 10

Ryan had a few moments, but I thought he was our best carrier.

Sextons coaching is certainly up for question now as was O Connells last year re line out. The line out is working well this year. I think Andy needs to shuffle the coaching team next year before the world cup

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,432 ✭✭✭OldRio

How a kick or two in front of the posts is a coaching issue I know not but whatever deflects.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,102 ✭✭✭shootermacg

Wow back! Even that run on the wing, all he had to do was a simple inside pass and it's a walk in, but he decided to bump the tackler. He should have learned that his job is passing, when he tried to run over Dupont and was sat down and his ball taken off him.

I generally still feel the trajectory is upwards, even if today was extremely sloppy. That said, Wales are improving every game and will be better yet next year if their URC teams are anything to go by. Glad to see that as Wales in the toilet is terrible for the 6N. We are still going into the last game with a lot of new caps and a few real prospects in Balacoune, Timoney, Osbourne and maybe Doak. I'd love to see him get more minutes next week. Issue around ten are still there though we've known for a while that even at their best neither SP nor Crowley are stand outs in the test arena, neither would be close to any other top 5 or 6 team's 23. For me kicking points is absolutely crucial for this Irish team, we aren't ripping teams apart and scoring tries off nothing so 3 pointers will make a huge difference for us. It's a basic skill and if the tens aren't up to it we need to look elsewhere on the team.

Crowley was ok again, no better or worse that his trend for Ireland. He isn't a bad game manager but he is very predicable and lateral in his movement and passing. Rarely see him make a killer pass or grubber, slow and steady I guess. BU thats where we are at ten, we have 3 or 4 guys in or around the same level, all of whom can do the job ot a satisfactory level but no real difference maker on the level of Johnny or JGP.

RTE put up a caption on who might be the potential MotM, two Irish and two Welsh but in fairness there was only one candidate from an Irish POV and that in itself tells a tale on how poor we were.

JGP was light years below the standard he set against England, his decision making at times was poor.

At the end of the day we get the BP win and have an extra day to rest/prep for next week

I'd fancy Scotland if the game was in Edinburgh but we should beat them at home. They must be itching to beat us at this point. They have ruined Triple Crowns in the past.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Ya, Crowley didn't set the world alight, but few in the team did. JGP was very poor by his standards. TOT and Conan Both had strong games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,766 ✭✭✭leakyboots

16m off 14 carries… but he put in the hard yards in fairness, can't fault the effort with ball in hand. I just thought he went a bit missing defensively again in a tight game this 6N and is prone to silly penalties. Maybe I'm being harsh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,102 ✭✭✭shootermacg

Look, put yourself in Crowley's shoes. It's a wonder he has any individuality left. Last week he was being praised for just sticking to "the system". It's like all the talent is being coached out of him.

Also he was huge in defence. He had to secure way too many rucks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,295 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Fair play to Tom O'Toole. As an Ulsterman, was expecting his scrum performance to put us under considerable pressure. He really stepped up and won at least two penalties. Good in the loose (as expected) - fair play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,088 ✭✭✭KaneToad

    My 2c player ratings:

O'Toole 6 - a good shift for Tom in an unfamiliar position. Good in the loose too.

Kelliher 6 - lively in contact and strong defence. A narrowing gap between him and Sheahan of late

Furlong 4 - some props improve with more miles on the clock. I don't think Tadhg is one of those props.

Beirne 7.5 - not sensational today but he sets a very high bar. Lucky to have him.

Ryan 7 - very solid performance this evening. We will miss him when he's gone.

Conan 8.5 - Mr consistency does it again. Would like to see him start at 8 next week.

Timoney 4.5 - I was really looking forward to his first start but it wasn't a great night for him. VdF won't be too worried.

Doris 7 - a relatively good night for the captain. Played the ref well and his own game was solid.

Park 5 - not at his best. And it effected everyone outside him

Crowley 6 - solid but not spectacular. Some obvious negatives with kicking off the tee. But that's fixable. Too predictable in attack though.

McCloskey 6 - didn't really impose himself on the game.

Ringrose 6 - all his good play was in defence. Probably need a 13 with the same defence but with more of an attacking threat.

Stockdale 5 - I don't see him getting many more caps. He's a solid URC level player at this stage in his career.

Balacounne 7 - some glimpses of brilliance but they were few. But he did shine in a largely dull lineup of backs.

Osbourne 5.5 - seemed to drop every high ball and moved very slowly in defence allow Wales to exploit gaps. Really need Keenan back & to get Osbourne into the centre

Clarkson 5 - don't think he's a test level front row. Didn't do much to impact the game.

Stewart 5.5 - was lively and physical but a bit of the levels of Kelliher & Sheahan

Milne 5.5 - didn't do much of note. But no glaring errors.

Doak 7 - a very good debut. Not that many minutes but looked very comfortable. Crisp passing. Quick ruck speed.

Frawley 7 - another brief cameo. Some lovely link play with Balacounne.

Farrell ? - had a brief run around and the only positive, for him, is that it counts as a cap.

VdF 7 - impressive in his short outing. He's under no threat from Timoney, based on current form

McCarthy 7.5 - several crucial interventions during his outing this evening. No brain farts. A good day at the office.

He looks like a very good player, always scanning and looking at what's on.

It's frustrating to see us struggle to adapt to an opposing teams defensive strategy again. We should've looked to kick more, both in terms of contestables and shorter probing kicks. Wales did well, finding grass behind us, on Stockdale's wing in particular, a better team would've made us pay more.
