the difference in the Cork team , there newcomers look ready made for senior . Ours don’t .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭Marsher555

More like they have decided how they want to play and that they can win the league. This results in newcomers and old times alike having some idea of what is expected and understanding if they met those expectations.

We on the other hand are aimlessly rearranging the same pieces in the hope that we hit some magical combination that will lead us to the promise land.

To be fair, you'd have to look at the players available. Two of or our best and most promising forwards absent aside, Cork have a wealth of underage talent that we just haven't had in recent years.

Jack Leahy got 1-5 in the Fitzgibbon final and hasn't even made their panel, albeit maybe he should have!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,940 ✭✭✭Deiseen

Mikey Kiely lit up the Fitzgibbon when he was in it. For whatever reason he just has not made the transition. His main attribute appears to be holding the ball up while backup arrives (or doesn't). Other than that he spends alot of the time over running the ball into dead ends.

Frustrating as he clearly has huge potential.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 806 ✭✭✭TheScoringGoal

I would feel Kiely is best at full forward. But Queally prefers Seán Walsh there when I think he could add more than Kiely in the half forward line.

Regardless of which is at the edge of the square, I can't understand how we don't have someone else in beside them. Kiely against Limerick had Treen beside him at times and that's how Treen got a few scores. Against Kilkenny Walsh was isolated and I thought did a really good job but needed someone to help him on the breaking ball against 2/3 Kilkenny defenders.

I wasn't in Galway so perhaps we did push someone up beside Walsh.

I don’t think it’s fair to single out Kiely there’s another 4/5 in that category that have been knocking around with a few years now and just haven’t kicked on and established themselves. Disheartening to see Rueben Halloran being taken off the frees after missing his first one on Sunday and then being subbed. Bennett messed up a couple against KK the week before but was allowed to stay on them. I feel like Halloran is being handed a bit of a raw deal having been excellent the first 3 league games.

I think you're right. Maybe what at we need most is to cut out the dead wood and lose the 5 or 6 who, at this stage, are clogging up the pipeline. I'm not talking about dropping them from the match day squad or extended panel, I mean gone. This will end this whole hedging our bets thing with management team, and give the remaining squad a sense of responsibility to stand up and deliver. Management can then clearly assess where the gaps are and do what they are are appointed to do, solve the problems.

Like what are we protecting only a record that has seen us never progress from the Munster round robin.

For once, I agree with the Master 100%.

I was just singling him out on this occasion but no doubt there's many more. Take Barron and Bennett out of our forwards and we are in dire straits indeed.

You know things are bad when master and marsher are aligned.

    Surprised no talk about it

very impressive feat by Ballygunner, 3 players also in contention for 'Club Hurler of the Year'

'AIB GAA Club Hurler of the Year Nominees

    Dessie Hutchinson (Ballygunner)

    Paddy Leavy (Ballygunner)

    Stephen O’Keeffe (Ballygunner)'

The 5 or 6, whoever they are, who do you replace them with?

Genuinely, we don't have a massive pool of talent, the step up to senior is huge compared to club or intercounty under age.

Even in our hay day in 90s/00s we were always shy of a few players.

For anyone that attends the local club championship outside of the players currently on the intercounty panel, very few if any stand up for contention.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,295 ✭✭✭914

That could destroy the lads confidence, I don't see any logic in it. By not having him on the frees against KK and then putting him on them against Gal, lumps massive pressure on him.

As you say to then take him off the frees after a miss, your head would be gone.

Free taking is so important at intercounty, at this stage of the year you would like to think you have that nailed down, rather than chopping and changing.

I feel there is so much to figure out before the championship, which should have been figured out sooner.

    Ha

I'll have to watch that. I'd say I'm being lured into a false sense of security. ;-)

    Come on now. 'Misquoted' ??

First Deiseen puts forward what was clearly a constructive piece of criticism on Michael Kielys current form, outlining his pedigree and potential in the process and suggesting a hint of a solution to the dilemma.

You then replied, not by agreeing or disagreeing with his analysis, but strangely suggesting that the same conclusion could be drawn on 4/5 other members of the panel. It was at this point that the thought struck me that it is high time that firm decisions were made on these players and maybe we can work out how to get the most from who remains. Tough decisions would be required but we have to get off the current roundabout that is resulting year after year on us failing to get out of Munster.

Hope I've done nothing permanent to hamper the growth of our budding friendship.

We wont know until decisions are made and the deadwood is cleared out. Only then can we get to work on developing who remains.

    PTH

You know as well as I do that those 3 lads hold no mass with many of the posters around here. They may well have earned recognition on the national stage but around here-

Sock - hounded off the county team a few years ago as only the negatives (and they were rare) were worth noting and he was blocking the way for Billy. Ironically there are recent posts suggesting he has let his county down by not making himself available years later.

Dessie- After a great start for Waterford against Clare last year we completely lost our way. Management in their wisdom seen the solution was to discard with Dessie rather than seeking to get the most from him.

Paddy- One of the real prospects we have who can toe to toe with any of the big men in the game is played out of position and is questioned every time a team selection is released.

So no I wouldn't have been expecting any recognition or kudos to be forthcoming from this forum

Jesus thats an outrageous statement. The ballygunner players as individuals and a whole have gotten more praise and well wishes on this forum than ever before.

The Munster championship can't come soon enough. Let's hope we get a performance on Sunday. There are plenty of places up for grabs all over the field so let's see who stands out against Tipp.

Donal O'Rourke is in coaching Glen Rovers this year and Joxer coaching Killeagh according to todays Examiner.

Corks Ronan Curran is in with Ballincollig and found it interesting that they say in the article that he would only return to Ballincollig after Cork finished. Wonder the same deal with O'Rourke and Glen Rovers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42,562 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Is a win for us Sunday enough to avoid relegation ?

Galway vs Kilkenny on Saturday will make things more clearer for Tipp esp if Kilkenny lose

That free in Nowlan Park could the reason we got back to 1B

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭Montys return

If Galway win, a win for Waterford guarantees survival. If Kilkenny win however, would either need a Limerick win against Galway on the last day or else need Kilkenny to at least draw with Tipp due to scoring difference if teams are tied on 6pts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,756 ✭✭✭Mastermcgrath

I don’t think there will be any issue really unless Waterford go further than cork in the championship and the cork championship starts before Waterford are out. Realistically speaking with the split season there is very little crossover between club and county seasons anymore and it’s perfectly feasible that you can be part of a club and inter county setup

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,266 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Stephen Bennett out for a few weeks with a hamstring injury apparently

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,876 ✭✭✭decies

Expect some big names to be gone after championship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,950 ✭✭✭Cake Man

Not ideal if Bennett is out but would much rather be without him now than in a months’ time. We’ll at least get our wish to have Reuben back on the frees and it’s an opportunity for others to step up and carry the scoring threat without relying on Bennett – something that’s badly needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,756 ✭✭✭Mastermcgrath

Ideal opportunity for Halloran now again just hope his confidence isn’t shot. Bennett has been phenomenal but only on borrowed time playing wise that’s the second significant injury he’s picked up in the last 6 months. We’re going to have to learn to move on without him eventually

Unless they get out of munster the first person I expect to be gone is Quelly!!!😏

No it won't be that free, it would be the inability to beat a poor kilkenny team, or not beating Galway, Cork, or possibly Tipp.

If we are honest the win against Limerick was unexpected and that gave us the perfect platform to ensure survival in 1A, and if we don't it will solely be on us and not a free V Kilkenny
