Statement from Sheila, MT's wife, who posted on Irish Weather Online:

"This is Peter's wife, Sheila. Thank you everyone for your wonderful messages. This community brought him so much joy over the years. Today our daughter and I are taking him the messages and condolences we have received in the past week for our final visit with him and yours will come with us. It was an old friend of his (also Irish) who contacted you (Sean?) about Peter but I may email you in the next week also.

There will be an obituary online with room for comments, I will pass on the link when I have it."

In the last year I've moved away from Ireland so I've been frequenting Boards.ie less and less as time has gone on. However I always had a bookmark bringing me straight to M.T's forecast. Always had a sense of comfort in it.

It's been about 2 weeks and I wondered what the weather was like back home, and I opened the thread to that awful news.

Sometimes when winter weather events (or others) were coming, I'd go back and read the forecasts of 2010 and 2018, read posts in the event threads, there was nobody else who's word was held in higher esteem on this forum than M.T Cranium.

Thanks Peter, for nurturing my (and others) interest in Meteorology. It was great you got to do it right to the end! RIP

What can any of us say. Very very sad to read this news, M.T. Cranium has been an absolute pillar of the Irish weather community for years, personally taught me and I'm sure taught many others so much about teleconnections and the theory behind them. His regular forecast threads were always eagerly awaited and his insights into everything weather and climate related will be sorely, sorely missed.

    Travel well, good sir ❤

Awful news. I read thousands of his posts yet never said a word to him. Always seemed a nice, calm, studied and interesting person. RIP.

I can confirm that she has read and responded:

"we will look at the Boards messages. I read every one of the 882+ messages here last night. What a wonderful community."

There's a tribute thread for MT on r/Ireland too, a lot of redditers read his forecast thread here.

I’m honestly so sad to hear this. I joined this forum back in November 2010 after coming across one of M.T. Cranium’s forecasts while searching online for weather info. He was talking about the potential for big snow, and I remember being so excited I genuinely didn’t even know places like this existed at the time. It completely blew my mind! I went straight into the thread and saw all these snow posts from other like-minded people, along with M.T.’s detailed knowledge. From that day on, I followed his forecasts and always kept an eye out for his updates and warnings.

Over the years, he became my go-to for anything weather related. When the Beast from the East hit, I actually printed out his forecast and brought it into a team meeting at work. We ended up shutting the business for a few days based on what we jokingly called “the bible.” That’s how much we believed in what he said. Even my family would ask, “What does M.T. think about the upcoming storm?” I’ve actually just come back from a snow holiday (after the manky winter we had!) and only saw this news when I got home, which feels someway fitting considering how much he sparked my interest in winter weather over the years..

I’m grateful for the time and effort he put into sharing his knowledge with all of us. He made a real difference here and will be very much missed. R.I.P. and thank you.

    RIP MT.

You were a legend on boards.ie

I just wanted to add my condolences to the family and friends of M.T. Cranium.

Like so many others in Ireland, his forecasts became part of my daily routine. During the winter months especially, I checked his updates religiously, always hoping to see signs of “white gold” on the horizon. But it wasn’t just the forecasts themselves, it was the clarity, the calm tone, and the obvious passion he had for sharing his knowledge with the community.

What stood out most was the generosity of it all. Day after day he gave his time freely, helping thousands of people understand what the weather might bring. For many of us, his posts were the first thing we looked for in the morning.

It’s rare that someone on an online forum becomes such a trusted and familiar presence in people’s lives, but he truly did. Ireland has lost a wonderful voice in the weather community, and he will be sorely missed.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
May he rest in peace, and thank you for sharing him with all of us.

I'm a farmer of outdoor lambing sheep as well as cattle so I literally HATE snow with a passion.

However, I share your opinion and memories of MT, and want to commend you on a truly great post.

I've already offered my condolences to his family and friends irl and online, here and on Irish Weather Online.

Genuinely stunned, as I haven't been on Boards since last week for various reasons, and I would always go straight to M.T's forecasts just to see if this never ending rain is ever going to stop, will we get snow, or if there's any chance of a good spell during the Summer, so to see that MT had passed was devastating for all of us who checked first thing every day for his wonderful forecasts. Nothing I can say will add to the wonderful and genuine tributes on here already, but for those of who checked his forecasts on a regular basis, nothing will ever be the same again, and a small tiny bit of our lives is gone forever. Rest in peace you absolute legend, and sincerest sympathies to his wife, daughter and family.

First time I've been around here in a while. Sad to read this news. MT Cranium brought a lot of insight to bear along with the model and historical analysis, and I always appreciated that when he'd field the questions from anyone old or new. He's a big loss to this place and many thousands across Ireland and beyond will miss him being around.

Rest in Peace, MT Cranium. Such a valued and knowledgeable member of this community. He had the most reliable posts and will be genuinely missed by so many people who never met him. That's some legacy.

    RIP MT.

The news still hasn't really sunk in, I keep randomly coming into the weather forum to get his forecast.

Many a field of grass I knocked for hay during periods of unsettled weather, the neighbors looking in over the ditch thinking I was mad. The word of the man himself was enough to give me the confidence and it never disappointed.

MT, fair play to you. It was a pleasure. RIP

Same for me. I hope that someone will take the baton and continue with the same approach?

I woke up this morning to the news that M.T had passed away. To be honest my heart is broken. I've been following M.Ts forecasts for about 18 years and I have to say my mornings feel so empty now that there is no weather forecast from what I honestly belive the legend that was Peter.

His knowledge knew no bounds and to show how much a gentleman he was he took time out of his busy schedule to produce an accurate forecast for our little island. No big dramatic headlines just a forecast you could rely on on a daily basis. I would have bet my house on Peter's forecasts over the years. This little corner of boards will sadly miss your enthusiasm for your profession. Rest in peace my dear friend. You will always be part of the boards community and will always be in our thoughts. Finally I would like to pass on my sincere condolences to Peter's wife and family.

This is Sheila, MT's/Peter's/Roger's wife. I want to say thank you to all for your wonderful comments. I can't tell you how much it means to read everyone's words. This community, and IWO, were very close to his heart. His daughter and I used to say, he doesn't just love weather, he is the weather. We're so glad he was able to share that passion and knowledge with this forum.

MT's post was the first thing I read every morning. As everyone has said, he was a legend. His forecasting was invaluable and always reliable.

RIP MT - Part of my daily routine in the morning to read his forecast in the morning with my coffee - found myself a couple of times this week automatically bringing up his thread and stopping when I realized there would be no new post - sad but its life.

I remember well the 2018 Beast from the East and my family being amazed that I called the snow when really I was just regurgitating MT's predictions and forecast.

Condolences Sheila to you and your daughter he will be very much missed.
