Yeah that is fair enough, not my ideal choice either as I fear it is too niche but a lot better than having the building vacant

I wonder would Lansdowne Rd. have any interest in the equipment from the rugby museum.

Or fit some in the Dugout to mess around with on match days.

Thomond park even, you would imagine they will find some use for it

That's what I meant by the Dugout. It's the bar under one of the stands.

If you ever find yourself in or near Bradford you should visit the National Science and Media museum. We needed to pass a few hours before flying home from Leeds/Bradford a couple of years ago and this museum is well worth the visit.

The 1st real IMAX I went to back in 97 or so.
Followed by some rapid curry and naan around the corner

The cinema was closed when we went as it was during COVID so had to settle for one in the city centre to pass away another few hours. Definitely some cracking food options in the area.

212 home landmark development announced for Limerick (live95fm)

The proposed Towlerton development has been carefully designed to create a sustainable, inclusive and well-connected neighbourhood that meets the needs of modern living.

The 212-home scheme will offer a diverse mix of high-quality homes, including:

-Four- three- and two-bedroom houses, ranging from elegant three-storey family homes to charming dormer bungalows

    -One- and two-bedroom own-door apartments

    -Two- and three-bedroom duplex units

At the heart of the new neighbourhood will also be a purpose-built crèche facility catering for approximately 40 children.

The development will also sensitively integrate with the surrounding natural landscape, including the nearby Groody Valley Green Wedge and adjoining streams.

Castletroy is the fastest growing suburb (Limerick Leader)

Almost four in every 10 homes completed in Limerick were in the electoral area which covers Castletroy and Annacotty, new figures have shown.

The figures have sparked calls for improved public infrastructure, with Independent councillor Elena Secas seeing a motion passed calling for this.

“Castletroy is the fastest growing suburb in Munster. Hundreds of new homes have been delivered in the area and hundreds more are under way, but the infrastructure simply hasn’t kept pace. Our roads are overwhelmed and congestion has become a daily reality. There is no road network designed for the level of traffic this area is experiencing,” Cllr Secas said.

    Groody Road - Ballysimon Road.png

M7 (J29) Ballysimon Road - Groody Road - Plassey Park Road - UL Main Entrance

There is only one road network that can still be redesigned and that is the Groody Road.

The biggest magnet is the University of Limerick with its 19,740 Students and 2,121 Staff.

It has become a main thorough fare for those commuting to the University from Tipperary, Cork, Limerick County and Clare when they leave or pass the Ballysimon Junction 29 (M7).

I would suggest to upgrade the Groody Road to a dual carriageway up as far as the main entrance of the UL on the Plassey Road.

In 20 years time UL could grow to have a student population of 30,000 and 3,000 staff?

The following is a list of buildings present and planned along the Groody route to UL.

    *****************

Northern Trust Office Block which comprises over 1,400 employees.

    *****************

Bon Secours 170 Bed Hospital and the Bon Secours Clinical Services Out Patient Hub

Capacity to care for 50,000 patients annually and 600 staff.

    *****************

    Limerick Educate Together Secondary School

The school moved into its new building with 710 students, 84 school staff

It is expected that the school’s enrolment will eventually reach 1,000 students.

    *****************

    Planning Application 2660089 Groody Road

The development consists of 95 no. apartments, 22 no. houses and a Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) scheme comprising 309 no. student bedspaces.

    *****************

    Brookfield Hall Student Village

    8 purpose-built blocks

60 apartments in total (Each apartment accommodates either two, three or four students)

    *****************

    Groody Student Park (396 Students)

It comprises of 88 units including 44 three bedroomed apartments and 44 six bedroomed houses.

    *****************

UL Groody Student Village off campus 147 Rooms

    *****************

UL Troy Student Village off campus 170 Rooms

    *****************

    Groody Neighbourhood Retail Centre

    *****************

    Whitebox Student Campus Groody Road

Plan to build apartment blocks with a total of 1,400 no. student bedspaces.

    *****************

The Park Retirement Village (Plassey Road)

    90 assisted-living apartments

    49 two-bed housing units

    55-bedroom nursing home

    *****************

Castletroy Park Hotel & Leisure Club

    134 rooms and suites

    *****************

    Castletroy Park Commercial Centre

    *****************

    UL Plassey Student Village

    Number of rooms: 424

First thing to do is fuk the NIMBYs on the Clare side of UL and reopen and upgrade the back entrance. After that get the full Limerick ring road completed.

Stop stalling Busconnects would be a huge help too.

Not much else you can do around Castletroy because all the pinch points and destinations are already built on.

I live on that side of Clare side of UL and it is painful to think that UL is literally a stones throw away yet it takes up to an hour to drive that side of town. If there was a connection from Clonlara/Ardnacrusha/Parteen over to Castletroy and on to the M7 it would remove some amount of congestion on both sides of UL.

It's not just the NIMBY's that's blocking the Ring Road

The Greens had a policy of blocking it and when in government their Minister didn't even want to start the section that is now a few days/weeks from opening. A train station in Moyross and one at Ballysimon Rd was going to solve all the traffic issue

The current Mayor is also against it or at least was against it the last I heard him speak about it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,672 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Well the Greens are gone and the NIMBYs were fighting it before they got in to government so that excuse has come and gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 27,313 ✭✭✭✭phog

The Greens are gone but Eamon Ryan has set that road project back.

The Mayor is still there too.

That is an unbelievably disappointing proposal seeing as the Towlerton masterplan had large apartment buildings rather than more urban sprawl housing estates.

That's the second time in a few weeks you've suggested dualing the Groody Road and this is the second time I'm going to tell you that's it's an awful idea.

We're trying to get people out of their cars, not encourage more car usage.

Does anyone know what site the white box development will be build on in groody ?

The more I look at the importance of the Groody Road the more I’m convinced of the reality that a dual carriage way will be required here.

Even the new secondary school is car driven as they built a dedicated DROP OFF / SET DOWN zone which goople maps nicely captures circa 50 cars navigating through it.

Has there ever been a more powerful or influential political party than the Greens? They seem to have been responsible for every government decision made in the last 30 years, whether they are in government or not. And building the LNDR will only make traffic congestion worse in the long run but who cares anymore.

Speaking of LNDR…the second part of the Coonagh to Knockalisheen Road opens next Monday.

This is the stretch from the new roundabout at the Country Club through to Knockalisheen Road and most importantly, into Moyross.

Traffic survey in fastest-growing suburb in Limerick is ruled out (Limerick Leader)

Onus on developers to do studies on vehicles, says Limerick City and County Council official

Limerick City and County Council will not carry out a new traffic study in an area which may see the construction of hundreds of new homes.

“These developments will result in more traffic congestion on the Groody Road and make it more challenging to enter and exit the Caisleán na hAbhann residential estate,” councillor Doyle said.

Cllr Doyle said many residents have told him they must leave before 8am during University of Limerick term-times to bring children to creche and school.

“I hope that a traffic study can confirm the congestion and come up with some solutions,” he said.

But transport director Patricia Liddy stated in response that the onus is on those applying for development to carry out what she described as a “mobility management plan”.

“This mobility plan requires developers to report on modal use by a development, including traffic figures using the development,” she wrote.

Ms Liddy added the objective of current strategies is to “promote modal shift”.

This means encouraging people to get out of their cars and use other transport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,672 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

The LNDR is necessary even if it does encourage extra cars. Moyross and to a lesser extent Caherdavin having only one direction out was a problem as was Clare commuters being forced to join local traffic.

Nobody should need to drive through the city centre to get to UL, UHL, TUS or the industrial estates.

Also Limerick traffic is a very limited morning and evening rush hour. That road will benefit north side people 24/7

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 27,313 ✭✭✭✭phog

I don't know if your airing your frustration at my post but I stand over it, the Greens did in fact delay the LNDR and are against it. They'd rather traffic go through the city.

My opinion of the LNDR is that if you want traffic to divert from going through the city then provide an orbital route

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,031 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Much as it pains me to admit, Cookiemunster is somewhat correct. There should be better public transport options in the area. For a suburb the size of Castletroy/Monaleen/Annacotty it should have a proper public transport plan is in place. Be it as big and complex as a railway station or even as simple as properly separated bus lanes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,096 ✭✭✭dashoonage

Is that not the 1400 student one and not the houses mentioned above ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,031 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

While I think we would all much prefer to see an improvement in our public transport services the building of the LNDR is required if we want to expand developments in our city. The fact of the matter is that public transport, even if it sees a vast improvement, will never cover 100% of the needs of the city. The road will provide an alternative to traffic going through the city centre which in turn will allow for development in and around the city

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,955 ✭✭✭adaminho

Plus you need both, a bus every 15 mins from Corbally is useless if its stuck in traffic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,031 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

You've probably given the example of the near 80% of people that a good bus service could deal with haha! For them you could look at running properly segregated bus corridors or even look at expanding the railway network to include Corbally

Such ideas, however, would be next to useless for somebody doing the daily commute from Castletroy to Caherdavin or UL to Meelick etc

Castletroy to Caherdavin will be covered by the #2 bus.

Even under the current routes it would be easy enough if the routes were on bus lanes.
