Thank you for flagging both of these issues here. I know that other mentioned the ghost notifications I am going to get some clarification on these points.

Random forum stickies seem to be appearing across all forums now?

Eg in this feedback forum im seeing stickies from the S & S forum and the subscribers forum.

^^ Can confirm the above private members forum stickies are appearing in other forums.

Was just about to post the same, stickies from Subscribers, R&R and Sex & Sexuality are appearing in the Work Problems forum, some non-sticky threads that don't belong there are too

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

    Hey there,

Thank you for sharing this. I have cleaned up the new groups section now.

I completely by accident found a whole load of posts in the subscribers' forum inviting opinions/applications/suggestions - in the course of trying to figure out how I could bookmark them so I might see such posts sooner I see this glitch in the "follow" button - it looks like the "following" has just been overlaid on the "follow" button

Also, despite seemingly having followed the forum (the option when I click on that mess of a button is to unfollow), it doesn't appear in the "My Forums" tab

@HeidiHeidi Also, despite seemingly having followed the forum (the option when I click on that mess of a button is to unfollow), it doesn't appear in the "My Forums" tab

My Forums tab is flooded with most recent activity so probably forcing these threads out of the list.

Solution bookmarks threads you want to follow.

I didn't know half of the threads were there in the first place!

The whole forum is getting more and more fragmented, and harder to navigate - particularly the bits relating to the future development of the site

Odd double empty replies to spoilered comments

Twice in recent days I made a spoilered comment in TV/Film forums and gotten a double empty reply…

I can't link to the posts without them being activated into quotes here…

    @Gremlinertia @New Home

    could I ask if:

    • the notification bell and list on the browser and on the phone at roughly the same time
    • Rough timestamps (with time zone) for when they last saw old or “extra” notifications

    Also screenshots would be helpful.

I apologise here but I'm not quite understanding the first part, at this point anyway the notification issue has resolved on my side..

I forget screenshots often, I'll try be more cognisant of that

*Having gone back to my post to review I can say that issue ended for me within two days

    Hi Mike,

I'm getting 30 notifications on desktop (Firefox) and 104 on mobile (also Firefox, Android).

    Screenshot from Desktop:

    Screenshot from mobile:

    Screenshot_20260226-085702~2.png

I tried to mark them as "read", it didn't work properly until yesterday (they would disappear and then reappear after I refreshed the page), I'll let you know if anything is different today.

    Thanks.

I just looked and have over 40 notifications but I also noted a bit of temu spam overnight so could be those. I only have phone access to boards the last few months, chrome, android

Now 52 on the phone and 35 on the desktop, which suddenly switched to 1.

Thank you for the cleanup. Since then though, weird ones reappeared:

    Screenshot01775.png

Oh, and as other Boardsies mentioned, just found sticky from Sex & Sexuality in Broadband forum.

    ==========

EDIT: I just spotted "New Group" button on top of Groups page. I always thought regular users are not allowed to create new groups? Correct me if I'm wrong.

There's quite the epidemic of spam today, more than I've seen in one day in quite a while.

    Has something changed?

@Boards.ie: Mike just had (14:10) one notification pop up from a post in AH that I had both acknowledged and replied to approximately 08:05 this morning.

Is the ability to add tags to new posts gone/broken? It's no wonder the search function is such a disaster!

I've just made a new thread, and tried to add some tags for it - but it seemed to be doing a search of existing tags or something - when I pressed post the tags just disappeared.

It doesn't seem to be possible to add tags to new threads.

Seriously, lads, the spam is starting to get out of hand the last few days - seems like every time I open the home page there's a few more.

Have a look at this thread for the last few days to give you an idea - and these are just the ones we happen to notice and bother reporting.

As someone else said, this is the only website/ forum i know of that has this problem, let alone on this scale.

It's getting to ridiculous at this stage.

+1 on this. I know they're deleted fairly quickly but they pollute the first page all too often. Is there no way new accounts can't create a thread until a few posts are made somewhere else?

  • Administrators, Boards.ie Employee, Boards Employee 2, Boards Employee 3 Posts: 1,673 ✭✭✭✭✭Boards.ie: Mike

I understand that all of this spam is frustrating and difficult to get past. It is very difficult to cut it out at the tart. We had this same issue last year.

Placing heavier early posting restrictions is counter intuitive and discourages new genuine accounts. Placing bans on things like names and addresses is also hit and miss.

There is no ideal solutions on this right now but I am looking into tools that Vanilla have to discourage spamming, however, every time I toggle on a feature it breaks something else while we still have the heavy customisations on site. The best thing to do for now is to continue to report and have a mod remove the account or by all means use the method in the bottom of your quoted excerpt.

    Thanks, Mike.

I don't use any other similar sites so I can't compare to know if it's worse on boards than elsewhere, but I'm seeing more and more posts that are obviously bots - enough that's it's becoming intrusive. I suspect it's a bigger problem with the way the internet is going in general since AI but it would be good if there was some way of stopping it.

I know it's hard when we want to encourage new users. What about some sort of email that they need to respond to to confirm or something when they're first signing up? I wouldn't find that offputting if I was a new member, as long as no personal information is required. Just some sort of link that you could follow to show you're a human. It wouldn't stop rereg trolls, messers or human spammers but personally I feel the bots are a bigger problem and a fast growing one.

Agreed. There's very little I sign up to these days that doesn't involve some sort of 2FA. I think people would expect it rather than be surprised/annoyed by it.

That thread that I linked to (Spam/Shill notifications) is also used for reporting bots and there are A LOT of them.

This is happening again the last day or two (this is a copy of a screenshot from a while back when it was happening regularly to loads of us).

It happened me just now when I edited a post on the Wordle thread - I didn't get a screenshot, but tried to replicate it in the test forum but that didn't work. So it's not every time, but I've had two or three since yesterday.

It's been happening on and off for at least a year, Heidi, if it's any consolation. I'm pretty sure it's related to the full-page Cloudflare errors we've also been getting for much longer than a year.

    Hi guys,

I'm looking for some updates on the ghost notifications issue. Are you seeing this as resolved or still happening? @Gremlinertia @New Home or anyone else that has had this issue.

    Any screenshots would be great.

    Thanks guys!

Mine have returned to normal - the ghost notifications are now just spam bots that get nuked before I get to them
