The kick along the ground would be kindly described as a terrible decision. The intercepted pass was stupid and awful. One of the cross field kicks should not have been attempted. Some of the missed tackles were Sam Prendergast level.

I wouldn't describe the pass as awful. It was millimetres away from being a great pass that Marcus Smith did very well to intercept. On another day it would have been a slap down and yellow card against him. Also the grubber kick, hits off an opposing players foot, happens all the time!

I really don't get where this narrative of Crowley being a poor offensive player comes from. When on song, he has a whole range of passes and can break the gainline on numerous occasions. He can also kick pass very effectively (perhaps not his best execution at times on Saturday).

What he suffers from is pushing it too hard at times. Trying to get every inch out of a kick or pull off the glory play. What he did really well last Saturday was reign that in and let others around him shine by facilitating them with nice crisp passing and organisation. His place kicking has come on a lot too (one bad shank aside).

But we get it, you want Harry Byrne to get a shot (even though you're apparently not a fan) and think both Crowley and SP are a waste of a jersey until someone more deserving comes through. Don't worry, we'll be all aboard the Casper Gabriel hype train soon enough!!😅

I'll leave you have the last word because no matter how I phase it you're unable to tell me of these "terrible decisions" you claim he made.

Ok lets play. JGP wasn't 10 out of 10 either, threw a few shaky passes including one to nobody. ToB missed a straight up tackle that lead to a try on 52 minutes. Dorris knocked on from a simple pass from JGP around his own 5M, Osbourne's handling was poor at times. I could literally go though the whole team making mistakes, except for Bobby B who was pretty flawless. We made plenty of mistakes, but England didn't punish them.

I watched a minute and it was pretty much a guy kicking the ball out of his own 22, I grew bored and stopped..

Perfect time for Farrell to depart, and good luck to him.

The end of 2027 will see him involved in the Irish team for fourteen and a half years, an extraordinarily long time in any coaching scenario.

These things always need a refresh and it will be an ideal time for Richie Murphy to take over.

If Farrell has a big deal like that on offer from Sarries, he'd be stupid not to take it.

He's also not as offensively good as Crowley either as I've pointed out to you before.

Why is he a safer bet if he's not as good in attack or defence than the guy currently starting?

There may be a case for Byrne to be the 2nd choice option over a currently out of form Prendergast, I'll grant you that.

FYI the poster you are responding to is a Connacht fan so your...analysis...probably won't get the desired reaction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,106 ✭✭✭shootermacg

Not looking for a reaction, just taking each post on a case by case basis.

You'd wish Farrell all the best for sure, but will be too soon for Richie Murphy, imo. (Fwiw, I understand why, but I really don't like the idea of going into a RWC with the players knowing the coach is leaving immediately post-tournament).

It'll be interesting to see who the IRFU go for after Farrell; they seem to like an internal appointment so Easterby could be on the cards, but I think it would be a little on the underwhelming side.

I don't think Cullen is a viable candidate, the only thing that might change that would be successive Champions Cup wins this season and next, imo.

You'd imagine ROG is a name that'll be linked with it a lot too with his CV. I do wonder if an outside appointment could be on the cards.

Lancaster as well is a name who will be linked with it at some point too, you'd imagine.

I don't think O'Gara is a suitable candidate. Frankly, his behaviour on the sidelines is disgraceful.

James Lowe will miss the rest of the Six Nations with a groin injury. It's a shame for him as he was coming into good form. Thought he was excellent against Italy.

In his absence I hope we continue on with TOB and Baloucoune as starting wings. Was very refreshing seeing the speed at which we counterattacked last weekend. For all of Lowe's undoubted qualities, he isn't a speedster like the former.

    This keeps being stated

He would be up in the coaches box at Test level.

Yes his discipline has been poor at LAR but he's a smart enough guy to know that can't carry on into Test level.

He would be in the mix but I expect IRFU to continue to promote from within as they have being doing.

It was steph du toit. Aki might have been in team of the tournament, or maybe Irish player of the tournament. But defo not player of the tournament.

I dunno - for me it just confusing that a player can show this form for the first time for the country at age 33. I know he was in the squad previously, but I guessing he has started less than 10 times?

he's a smart enough guy to know that can't carry on into Test level.

Smart enough to know he can't do it at test level, but not smart enough to stop doing it at Top 14?

It's not about being smart, it's about self-control, and tbh he doesn't have it. How many times has he been banned, five, six? No, he's not a candidate, especially with LAR's trajectory.

I'd be very surprised if the next head coach is anyone other than Easterby or Murphy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,957 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Had a quick look, he's down for 20 starts (going back to his debut in 2015/16 season). 7 of them are this season.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see a direct swap with Mark McCall, although I reckon he would be more of a replacement for Borthwick, which could be sooner than Farrell's contract expiry!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,957 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Is it too obvious to point out that "LAR's trajectory" being downwards in large part because of how far ROG took them… upwards?

ROG may not get the job but personally, I don't think we're in any position to entirely rule out a 2 time Champions Cup winning manager.

I suppose everyone feels they have a shelf life. I will be sorry to see him go if this happens.

It is not like they have fallen back to mid-table mediocrity. They are pretty much falling apart at the seams it seems.

The IRFU are (rightly) not going to have any interest in a coach who has been banned 6 times for his comments (making up the guts of a full season of bans!), learns no lesson from it, is very bizarrely constantly in the media despite being an active coach.

I am sure they would be interested in bringing him in as an assistant if he was interested but there is no way he is going to leap into the head coach role with his track record.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,957 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

A track-record that includes 2 champions cups. I just don't think we're so well off with quality options from within that we can not even consider someone with that record.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 360 ✭✭big-al

McCall is staying in the back room as an advisor or some such

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,730 ✭✭✭ersatz

He's beem in squads and been selected for 6N matches before but he has had a few untimely injuries and has also been up against 2 others for the jersey in Henshaw annd Aki, both of them exceptional players in their peak. It's also fair to point out that ulster have been in the doldrums for years and right or wrong, not playing at the business end in Europe hurts any player's prospects for the Irish team when there is strong competition. Yeah, Aki at connacht but he has been a standout for Ireland for years and hard to shift.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,044 ✭✭✭50HX

He's not a candidate says the judge & jury of FFF.🙄

He has built an impressive CV that shouldn't be over looked, we don't exactly have head coaches with proven track success sloshing around.

As I said I think it will internal appointment so this place won't melt down if he did get it

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 33,851 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

And no Top14s and a myriad of red flags.

Ireland haven't gone outside their local talent pool for a head coach since Brian Ashton. You don't change that approach for someone with as many red flags as ROG. You bring him in as an assistant or a provincial coach and see how he handles that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,018 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Yeah I think they were very good and the result brought lot of joy, but it wasn't AS good as the coverage would suggest. One particular omission from the coverage is Furlong on Curry. I think Furlong was very lucky not to be carded for that. Seems squarely a card and a bunker decision. Red would have been harsh but not beyond the bounds of possibility. But it hasn't even been discussed because they won.

It's worth pointing out when your team gets lucky with a referee decision, because we're not shy about pointing out when they're unlucky.

Just to be clear I don't dislike any of them. The reason I'd like Byrne is that he's not terrible on either side of the ball.

I don't believe we have a decent out-half. I've heard a lot about, but know nothing about, Gabriel.

I haven't seen enough of Jack Murphy to have an opinion on him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 27,547 ✭✭✭✭phog

None of us know who the IRFU will want to replace Farrell but so far every coach we've had, have been on a downward trajectory when they left.

Unless Farrell wins next year's Grand Slam or get us to a RWC he too has been on a downward trajectory

We can all give reasons on why someone like ROG might not be considered but that's based on how you feel about him rather than how the IRFU would see him as a Head Coach.

If they think he has the ability to take Ireland up a level like he did with LaR then he can be in the hunt. I mean they have Sexton currently in a coaching role, who we all know got a ban for attacking the officials after a game that he wasn't involved in.
