Aki doesnt have as many strings to his bow as McCloskey.

McCloskey is the most skillfull centre in the Irish squad, his passing is top notch and hugely underrated outside of Ulster (witness his passing to set Baloucoune off down the wing) And he is obviously a quality carrier.

McCloskey has actually kicked goals for Ulster as well.

Aki is a pretty average (being kind) passer, certainly off his weak hand, but has serious footwork and power as well.

I'm not going to bother looking at your highlight videos because they are just that, all the good and none of the bad. We could post the exact same awesome looking videos for Prendergast.

In general Crowley is a poor offensive player. Even against England he made some terrible decisions. In a tight game we could have lost because of them.

As i said I'd like to see Byrne get a shot. I'm no fan of Byrne, as I said earlier I just think he's more balanced. I don't want to see him there long term. I'm hoping somebody breaks through soon who is actually good enough to own the jersey.

Can you give some details of what you class as "Even against England he made some terrible decisions."

**** Jesus, back to the ten "debate".

Plenty of heat, not much light on this.

He decided on a kick to the right when keeping the ball in hand was the right thing to do, that gave the ball straight back to England when holding onto it would have had us well inside their 22. He threw an awful pass that was intercepted. There were a couple of poor cross field kicks and he missed a fair few tackles as well.

I can't recall your first point but the rest aren't poor decisions. Poor execution does not equal poor decision

Look, we all know you prefer Harry but Andy has never elevated him above 4th choice for Ireland

There's no way the ten debate is over, but surely it's at least on hold for now?

Crowley made some mistakes against England but on balance it was a good display. Prendergast did some good things against France and Italy but on balance, he wasn't great.

Until something happens to shift that balance again, it isn't really a question who should play.

He hasn't, yet, but I'm hoping he does. Who'd have ever guessed that he'd have decided to make Frawley no.2?

I'm a Connacht fan, he's coming to us next season, and I'd never have even contemplated it and don't agree with it. That's not to say he isn't good enough but you have to be playing the position with some regularity to be even considered in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 27,613 ✭✭✭✭phog

That doesn't explain the "poor decisions" you claim that Crowley made v England

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 43,029 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I already spoke about them. You appear to think that a bad cross field kick isn't a bad decision. You can't remember the awful kick along the ground to the right so all you think he did wrong was the awful pass.

Sounds like a very blinkered memories and opinions to me.

There is nothing blinkered about it and you can leave that leave that sh1t out of the discussion.

You appear to think that a bad cross field kick isn't a bad decision. You can't remember the awful kick along the ground to the right so all you think he did wrong was the awful pass.

Even if we all accept that poor execution equals a terrible decision then you only have listed something like 3 pieces of play, none of which was terrible.

Over the course of the game I don't recall wondering why he took a decision in play that I would have considered a terrible one and you haven't posted anything that would make me change my mind.

The kick along the ground would be kindly described as a terrible decision. The intercepted pass was stupid and awful. One of the cross field kicks should not have been attempted. Some of the missed tackles were Sam Prendergast level.

I wouldn't describe the pass as awful. It was millimetres away from being a great pass that Marcus Smith did very well to intercept. On another day it would have been a slap down and yellow card against him. Also the grubber kick, hits off an opposing players foot, happens all the time!

I really don't get where this narrative of Crowley being a poor offensive player comes from. When on song, he has a whole range of passes and can break the gainline on numerous occasions. He can also kick pass very effectively (perhaps not his best execution at times on Saturday).

What he suffers from is pushing it too hard at times. Trying to get every inch out of a kick or pull off the glory play. What he did really well last Saturday was reign that in and let others around him shine by facilitating them with nice crisp passing and organisation. His place kicking has come on a lot too (one bad shank aside).

But we get it, you want Harry Byrne to get a shot (even though you're apparently not a fan) and think both Crowley and SP are a waste of a jersey until someone more deserving comes through. Don't worry, we'll be all aboard the Casper Gabriel hype train soon enough!!😅

I'll leave you have the last word because no matter how I phase it you're unable to tell me of these "terrible decisions" you claim he made.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,106 ✭✭✭shootermacg

Ok lets play. JGP wasn't 10 out of 10 either, threw a few shaky passes including one to nobody. ToB missed a straight up tackle that lead to a try on 52 minutes. Dorris knocked on from a simple pass from JGP around his own 5M, Osbourne's handling was poor at times. I could literally go though the whole team making mistakes, except for Bobby B who was pretty flawless. We made plenty of mistakes, but England didn't punish them.

I watched a minute and it was pretty much a guy kicking the ball out of his own 22, I grew bored and stopped..

Perfect time for Farrell to depart, and good luck to him.

The end of 2027 will see him involved in the Irish team for fourteen and a half years, an extraordinarily long time in any coaching scenario.

These things always need a refresh and it will be an ideal time for Richie Murphy to take over.

If Farrell has a big deal like that on offer from Sarries, he'd be stupid not to take it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,065 ✭✭✭almostover

He's also not as offensively good as Crowley either as I've pointed out to you before.

Why is he a safer bet if he's not as good in attack or defence than the guy currently starting?

There may be a case for Byrne to be the 2nd choice option over a currently out of form Prendergast, I'll grant you that.

FYI the poster you are responding to is a Connacht fan so your...analysis...probably won't get the desired reaction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,106 ✭✭✭shootermacg

Not looking for a reaction, just taking each post on a case by case basis.

You'd wish Farrell all the best for sure, but will be too soon for Richie Murphy, imo. (Fwiw, I understand why, but I really don't like the idea of going into a RWC with the players knowing the coach is leaving immediately post-tournament).

It'll be interesting to see who the IRFU go for after Farrell; they seem to like an internal appointment so Easterby could be on the cards, but I think it would be a little on the underwhelming side.

I don't think Cullen is a viable candidate, the only thing that might change that would be successive Champions Cup wins this season and next, imo.

You'd imagine ROG is a name that'll be linked with it a lot too with his CV. I do wonder if an outside appointment could be on the cards.

Lancaster as well is a name who will be linked with it at some point too, you'd imagine.

I don't think O'Gara is a suitable candidate. Frankly, his behaviour on the sidelines is disgraceful.

James Lowe will miss the rest of the Six Nations with a groin injury. It's a shame for him as he was coming into good form. Thought he was excellent against Italy.

In his absence I hope we continue on with TOB and Baloucoune as starting wings. Was very refreshing seeing the speed at which we counterattacked last weekend. For all of Lowe's undoubted qualities, he isn't a speedster like the former.

    This keeps being stated

He would be up in the coaches box at Test level.

Yes his discipline has been poor at LAR but he's a smart enough guy to know that can't carry on into Test level.

He would be in the mix but I expect IRFU to continue to promote from within as they have being doing.

It was steph du toit. Aki might have been in team of the tournament, or maybe Irish player of the tournament. But defo not player of the tournament.

I dunno - for me it just confusing that a player can show this form for the first time for the country at age 33. I know he was in the squad previously, but I guessing he has started less than 10 times?
